  • Mondeo Tdci real world motoring 20 Jun 2004 (Forum)
After running three Subarus I fancy a change,(sacrilege) and cannot afford the latest 04 model. My requirement is a large estate with dynamic driving qualities and reasonable mpg. My 97 Legacy delivers a pretty constant 32/35 mpg, mainly rapid country A roads, but I do not want to sacrifice better mpg for unreliability. My budget is limited to £7k so a Mondeo seems a good alternative, especially in view of HJs recommendation.
  • The Speed Camera Thread - Volume 21 2 Jun 2004 (Forum)
The speedo on the bike would be right under his nose. Doesn't look as if he has friends or family to help him to get to Court. No wonder the way he drives. He's risked it, lost and is now wingeing, An accident waiting to happen. BR jury whats your verdict? DVD
  • Rear leg and head room 7 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I think that when cars are tested, consideration should be given to tall people when assessing leg and headroom. This is usually done when assessing the driving position but not when assessing the room for rear seat passengers.
  • People just can't drive when it's cold 14 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Rant mode on: I say this because this morning, over an eight mile stretch of dual carriageway, I saw no less than five individual accidents, with police...
  • RE: Peugeot 306 Rear silencer 6 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have found that the rattle doesn't happen if you hold the rear silencer tail pipe when a door is closed. The rattle only lasts for a few minutes when driving. It disappears after 5 mins driving. When the car is warm its fine. I thought it could be a caliper rattling. But I think its the exhaust. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this. I was thinking of changing the rear silencer brackets.
  • Polo Alarm Problems 27 Nov 2003 (Forum)
The first time it happend, I tried opening the door with the key - and possibly stupidly, thought that this might allow me disarm the alarm and drive away - but no - the alarm went off, immobiliser on - car not going anywhere! Stuck now with car alarm going off in res. area on a Saturday night. Disconnected battery, left it over night! Came back to it in the morning, reconnected battery, all works fine!
  • Alternator required on 1988 Corolla 27 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I'm in a very rural area and whilst the car has some power left, it obviously can't recharge the battery or cool the engine whilst driving, so my options of driving off somewhere else for economic repair aren't marvellous. Am I being ripped off or does this seem like fair estimates/quotes?
  • Peugeot 306 1.4 W Reg 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hey Guys, I really need help on this one, its getting expensive but driving me MAD !!!!!!!!!!!!1. After about 5,000 Miles the brakes started to become very squeeky. I took it into Kwik Fit who advised the pads to be changed. I handed over my hard earned cash and within 500 miles the brakes started to squeek again.
  • 1.8 Focus fuel consumption 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The tail pipe looks quite black and in the good old days of carburetters I would be looking to make some adjustments. The car appears to warm up very quickly and drives perfectly well. As I mentioned it is 'nearly new' so may well have sat in a field for a while. Has anyone any suggestions as to possible faults which could develop in these circumstances. Do lambda sensors deteriorate if not used?
  • Overheating Carlton 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
, rather it?s just normal, quite slow, driving in lower gears for maybe 5 to 10 minutes with frequent pauses (pedestrian crossing etc). I tested the viscous coupling operation, off the car, using a hairdryer?.after it got quite hot (uncomfortable to hold) it stiffened up rather well I thought.
  • High pitch noise when bearing right? 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Hi All I have a VW Golf Mk2 1300 82,000 miles. After a few miles driving (i.e. when the car has warmed up) a high pitch noise occurs when the road veers to the right. This noise therefore occurs when I turn the steering to the right, it?s comes from the front of the car most likely the driver side wheel.
  • An update and a question 24 Jun 2003 (Forum)
All over the drive of the rented property. Has anyone any ideas how to get oil off a driveway (tarmac) and a garage floor (concrete)? Thanks in advance. Paul C
  • Another accident thread 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Two cars are crossing a junction where the traffic lights have failed. One hits another. Witness says that both were driving carelessly at high speed, but both parties decide to sue the other so the witness isn't called as it doesn't suit either party's case. One is an uninsured 40ish woman, the other is an insured 19 year old guy.
  • Volvo 760 Behaving Badly 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The car is a 1987 Volvo 760 2.3 Turbo automatic, the problems are as follows; When the car is started it idles correctly, select drive and then select park or neutral and the engine revs repeatedly from idle to approx. 1600 RPM over a two second cycle. This problem can be overcome if the revs are held at 2000 RPM for a short period and then released.
  • Inflexible free insurance - help please 13 May 2003 (Forum)
We need to get a car for Mrsb as she can't drive my company car on business (she's a slf-employed classical musician). Mrsb has been driving for 2 years (no claims or accidents). She's test-driven the Yaris and really likes it. A (very efficient) local dealer has agreed to match the price of ukcarbroker.co.uk so all should be well.
  • Intermittant fault (Mitsubishi) 1 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be & how to eliminate the various suspect components. I realise it's a total nail but one which is good to drive and has been V reliable until now.
  • Is this bit important? 10 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Ah, happy days. Been a while since I had a car that bits drop off as you drive along, last 5 years had Toyotas, bullet-proof but boring. My Xantia has a bit under the engine that I can only descibe as a sump cover board. Its an oily horrible board that covers the bottom of the engine from the front bumper to the footwells and from wheel arrch to wheel arch.
  • Jerky Cav Drivetrain 20 Jan 2003 (Forum)
92J (1989-92 shape) Cavalier 2.0i 8v manual. (GL not SRi) The drivetrain is very jerky and it is very difficult to drive smoothly in traffic. Purchased at 88k, its now done 143k and its no worse or better. Makes no difference whether engine or weather is hot or cold. When you are in gear and accelerate the drive jerks and chunks noticeably (noise and feel).
  • Minor dilemma - go by car or train? 2 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Other factors to consider - relative is housebound so we can't meet half way. Husband is working so can't do the driving for me (!) Route by car is likely to be M27 - A34 - M40 - M42 - M6 -10 mins local roads. I (more or less) stick to speed limits, and on a good day, the car journey would take about 3 1/2 hours I think.
  • 1999 Laguna Starting Problems 15 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Sometimes you cannot even jump it all. I have had the temperature switch replaced. Another intermittant fault is when driving along you loose power so that it feels as though you are driving with only half of the engine power and it sounds really rough. If you stop turn off the engine and re start it then it runs as normal.
