Mondeo TD - glow plugs, right? 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Have always let glow plugs have two goes before starting, since I've had it (a year) and has always started OK. Filter head is only 6 moths old, have changed fuel filter and seals. Sure its not air in system anyhow as once it's warm, it'll start instantly, until it's been left to stand for about 7 or 8 hours, plus starts after turning over for about 30 seconds when I get back to it after work, as opposed to a good minute first thing in these frosty mornings, which can't be doing any good! -
Yet another "senior moment" 20 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Only the Japs would make a V-Twin that looked like an air-cooled engine then hook up a liquid cooling system with a fan to boot. As for fuel injection, that's voodoo material. No carb? Chain drive? Rear drum brake? That's more retro than any Harley. Not to mention more bits to go wrong. When I parked it up in the car port this a.m. I swear I could hear our two Harleys sniffing with disdain. -
Audi A3 Thoughts 12 Nov 2004 (Forum)
BUT - I am doing quite a bit of mileage now and it has to go I think distressing as it might be, it need s a lot of servicing, the repair bill can be high, and the fuel consumption is another story. Anyone want to buy? Having looked at some impressive diesel cars I really like the Audi A3 2.0 diesel with DSG. I drove an SE for a longish test drive and was impressed by the performance and the transmission. -
Nissan Primera Engine Management Fault 16 May 2004 (Forum)
I assume the problem is related to the initial ignition failure, though it has been suggested to me that the problem may be the 'pressure isolation valve' in the fuel injection. The laatest thing my local mechanic has done is to fit some sheilding to prevent the ingnition causing interference with the ECU. This gas imprived things considerably, but not completely and I can't help thinking it's curing the symptoms rather than the root cause of the problem. -
Keep the bonnet shut!! 18 Mar 2004 (Forum)
All the vehicles I have been involved with have the washer bottle in with the engine or in the front wing and you need to lift the bonnet for access. Why not have a little external flap like the fuel flap? Cost and appearance spoiling the line? But many vehicles pump washer fluid from the front to the rear washers so why not have the bottle at the rear with a little flap and a small filler tube, then pump fluid to the front. -
Mondeo, 2.0 or 2.5? Also other questions 11 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Would it be far more likely to turn into an expensive money sucking black hole than a 2.0 would be? Whats is the fuel economy like - I do about 5000 miles a year, mostly in town. I get a few more toys on the V6 as well, rear disc brakes and traction control, but thats nothing I couldn\'t live without. What do you reckon? -
Satellite navigation on the cheap 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
My Garmin software [1] gave me route planning, very detailed maps with street names, plus a huge database of fuel stations, food and lodging and loads of other stuff. When connected to my GPS I could get a tracking facility showing my real time location on the laptop screen, which was handy when driving in a large foreign city. -
The Top Gear Thread - Vol 5 3 Nov 2003 (Forum)
This is project 7 of 10. Look out for the Golf 5, shortly. Other projects have been the 1 litre car. 100km on 1 litre of fuel, driven br Dr. Ferdinand Pietch just before he retired, Almost 300 mpg. The Lupo 3litre. 90 odd mpg, but costs too much to convert to RHD for us. The Phaeton. All of this started in the late 80s. -
Speed Limiter Directive 28 May 2003 (Forum)
DfT also questioning the need for limiters and that the selection of the speed means that light vehicles will be limited to the same as heavier ones and dangerous bunching will occur. Informal tests so far show fuel savings of ~34% So we now have the prospect of Mercedes Sprinters 6tgvw, 156 bhp limited to 56mph. Foot to the floor brain in neutral. We are not amused. Ok all right.. go on then.... rant away! -
Decisions, decisions .......... 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
(if you can call 286bhp and almost 300 lbft of torque relaxed !) and more flexible as it can be had in estate form. Fuel consumption is fairly similar, but M5 servicing and insurance would be higher. I don?t know how but I?ve managed to talk SWMBO into getting these 2 into the short list along with the Land Cruiser 4.2 TD VX, and before you invoke section 28 and send the men in white coats round, I am aware that both the BMWs could prove to be financially crippling??? -
Shell safety warning? 15 Apr 2002 (Forum)
In the third case, an individual suffered burns to the thigh and groin as fumes ignited when the phone, which was in his pocket, rang during fuelling. Why did it happen ? It is a misconception that Mobile Phones can?t ignite fuel / fumes. It is believed that the more modern phones (those that light up when either switched on or when they ring) have enough energy released to provide the spark for ignition! Learning Points 1. -
Two questions... 12 Dec 2001 (Forum)
2.b) Should I overinflate the tyres, given that they will not be in contact with the ground and, therefore, under any pressure? 2.c) I remember reading that little fuel should be left in the tank. How little? 2.d) Leave the windows open a couple of millimetres to allow airflow. What about airflow to the boot, given that the car is a 2 door saloon and the rear seets do not fold down? -
What used family car? Too much choice is a curse.. 29 Oct 2020 (Forum)
· Low running costs - Reasonable fuel economy, insurance, road tax and service/maintenance costs i.e. we can rule out the supercars! · Body type - Five door hatchback/saloon/estate as I’m not convinced by SUV’s in terms of cost, space or ride quality, and not keen on MPVs. -
Toyota Auris - Honda Civic - Civic 1.8 VTEC 9th Gen (2012) vs Auris 1.6 VMATIC (2013) 13 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Would they give similar performance and fuel economy on a motorway run? Any experiences / thoughts appreciated. I will try to get a test drive on the 2013 Auris. However they are not very common and easy to find nearby. Meanwhile, any thoughts / advice on these 2 cars are welcome... -
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer - A weekend test drive in a BMW 225xe plug-in hybrid 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
‘Sport’ mode uses the petrol & electric motors together all the time (obviously using more fuel too), and is good fun – the throttle response becomes very eager, and it delivers surprisingly (and amusingly) rapid performance both from a standing start and when merging from slip-roads, overtaking etc. -
Ford Focus Zetec 5 Dr 1.6 Tdci (2011 mark3) - Control panel lights and cAN bus issues 23 Jan 2015 (Forum)
From purchase the car is a little hesitant on pick up away from standstill and between 1st and 2nd. It also appears to be producing poor fuel consumption. After filling up and resetting the MPG computer, on a 120 mile run (all motorway) at 60/65 mph, the recorded MPG was 42. Official fig 68mpg so realistically expected to see 55+ on this type of journey. -

Vectra 3.2 V6 2003 - Vectra cuts out and wont start......sometimes 5 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Again, plenty of power from the battery and it ‘felt’ like it wants to start but it just wouldn’t ‘kick in’. I thought ‘Fuel’ but had plenty and then thought ‘fuel pump issue’ or an ‘overheating’ issue?? I left the car on that dual carriage all day as I had to attend the course. -

Picked up the Scenic today.... 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
It's the refinement of the thing that gets me though - it's hard to believe this and the Mondeo run on the same fuel. The Renault engine is a little clattery under load when cold, but once warm it's smoother and quieter than the 1.6 petrol we also drove and in a different league to the admittedly olde worlde Mondeo.
