  • Registering a UK car in Germany 5 May 2005 (Forum)
He'll give oit to me for buttons, and it's ideal for our (suddenly changed) My mad idea is to register it in Germany, where I live, and run it into the ground over the next three/four years, then scrap it. So, does anyone have any experience of registering RHD cars in Germany? Any dos or don'ts? What documents should I definitely not forget?
  • Mercedes E320CDI Brake Pump Noise 14 Apr 2005 (Forum)
After 3 pumps on the brake the pump starts up for about 3 seconds then shuts off. When the engine is running its not so intrusive however it often starts first thing in the morning when I put the key in the ignition (priming itself I guess!) and seems too noisy. I have had it checked by MB today and they say its normal and nothing is wrong.
  • ecotec probs - Vauxhall Cavalier 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
hi,i have a 1995 2.0 gls 16v injection cav,it has been fine untill the other day the ecu warning light came on,i used the home method of shorting the pins out to be able to read the codes, which were,24-vehicle speed sensor-no signal and 92-camshaft sensor-incorrect signal,i was hoping that you may be able to tell me, A: does the car have to be running to get the vss or is the sensor just no good and B: what does incorrect signal on the cam sensor mean is it that the sensor has gone or has it got to be adjusted to get the correct signal.Could you also tell me if poss what is involved in changing both sensors, any help would be most appreciated.
  • Hyundai deals 30 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I said go look at the Panda or Getz. He only does about 50 miles per week at most. Into work and home is 7 or 8 miles per day plus running around at the weekend. Anyway, there were some great deals on Getz's a few weeks ago but don't remember where they were - can anyone remember? -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • question of values/peace of mind 27 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Man wants to spend £2000 on first car for daughter, and reliability is main consideration. Cars in this sector can be expensive to run, HJ points out. Then, in next topic, a reader points out you can buy a new Suzuki Alto for £4,250 on the road and with three year warranty. Makes you think it's better to borrow more than your budget and go for such a buy.
  • insurance ripoff 12 Mar 2005 (Forum)
So I'm actually getting just £1-50 a month back for cancelling a policy that's costing £60 a month with 4 months to run? Er yes there's an admin charge of £15 plus other factors which the computer system takes into account. Any insurers care to comment?
  • How do I tell If Glow plugs are going? 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)
About a week ago I had my alternator and battery checked and was told both were fine. Once it's been running it'll start up almost instantly any time afterwards. For example, I made some small start/stop journeys yesterday and it was fine, it's just in the mornings that it seems to find difficult. Should apply some gas (ie put my foot down on the accelerator) before starting etc?
  • Megane 1996 - poor idling 31 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I don't suspect anything as sinister as a head gasket as I'm not losing water & it was replace about 9 months ago following a cam belt failure & subsequent top end rebuild. Apart from the idling, she runs sweet as a nut.
  • peugeot 306 cooling fan not coming on 28 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi all My 98 306 xsi boiled over the other day after a journey into London (water was dripping from the rad overflow, so not a breakdown in a cloud of steam but it was only 8 degreess C out). After further investigation it appears that the fan is not coming on. I left the engine running until the temp gauge read 100C (red line is just over 110C), but I would expect the fan to have cut in by 100. Any thoughts? Thermostat? Broken fan? Dodgy wiring? I had the air con condensor, some pipes and both rads changed a few months ago and can't remember whether I have heard the fan since.
  • People's car 27 Jan 2005 (Forum)
All these cars had the same idea of bringing motoring to the masses. They all survived incredibly long production runs, been evolved gradually and even now have legions of fans (and detractors) I'm not sure there's a true people's car in production today, so what should it do, what spec should it have, how should it look and what else would you do if you were planning to design a car like this?
  • Accord - do 17" wheels mess up its ride? 8 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I've driven the car with the standard set-up, and thought the ride was firm-ish, with a bit of road-roar from the rear. Have any BackRoomers tried both wheel sizes, or failing that, does anyone here run an Accord with 17" wheels and have any feedback about it?
  • '98 Astra 1.7TD - Noisy Power steering? 17 Dec 2004 (Forum)

  • 1992 Passat cooling system/temp gauge 13 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Also, the heater isnt blowing hot air at speed. The manual says it should be at about 90 degrees, normal running. Does this mean it isnt getting round the engine since its not getting hot? I drained, flushed and refilled the system with coolant a couple of weeks ago, but didnt remove the thermostat (realised this after reading grahamf1's post this month!).
  • Vauxhall steering wheel click/creak 12 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I run a 1999 (facelift) Vectra 2.0 petrol with 120k miles on the clock. Does anyone know what might be causing an annoying click or creak when the steering wheel is turned ??. The click happens when the steering wheel is in a particular position and the click is heard then the wheel goes through this point and also when it returns.

  • Rover 420SLDi Turbo 1 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Or is there a defect in the fuel metering system, I am not familiar with diesel technology. There does not seem to be any engine fault, it runs and pulls effortlessly with no sign of engine distress. Thanks in advance.
  • Jazz/Fit 1.5 Vtech 16 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I drive circa 30k a year private miles and have run a Honda Jazz for the last 2 years which I now feel I have wrung the most out of and I'm due a change. (Laugh if you liek but it's a brilliant bit of kit with more interior space than the A4 my wife drives and has averaged over 50 mpg in 60K miles!)
  • Metro 1.1 94 startup judder and stall 8 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Now when i start it after a couple days of no use it starts fine, but once changed from 1st to 2nd gear the car will judder quite violently and then roll to a stop and stall no matter whether the clutch or accelerator is down or up. This continues for about 10 minutes or so. Once the car has warmed up and gone for a good run, it goes fine, next time it starts up is fine. But once left for a few days again it just resorts back to stalling on me. Anyone got any ideas as to what the problem could be??? Thanks
  • Honda Accord 1988 - Engine Idle Surging 8 Oct 2004 (Forum)
s warmup phase, during which time the revs have gone up and down between 1200-2000, but since the cambelt change, it is now happening during normal hot running. I?ve checked all the hoses (I found one loose tiny hose), and the earth connection. I would be grateful if anyone has any ideas as to what may be causing the surging, especially following a cambelt change.
