  • Low mileage bmw compact - advice 15 Apr 2003 (Forum)
It's now done 23k and is loosening up nicely! it was serviced by BMW before I bought it and due to it's age they changed the brake fluid, coolant, and plugs along with the oil. It has only had 2 oil services in it's life previously (I guess it was serviced on the "lights", and it has been used infrequently). It has a 4 spd auto box, should I be looking to change the fluid in this kind of transmission to prolong the life of the box, and what about the differential, would this benefit from change at this age or shall i leave it for a few more miles.
  • Any make or model: - Lubricheck Oil Condition Monitoring Gizmo 2 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Changes in these parameters tend roughly to correlate with changes in dielectric constant, so (with many but not all oils) you can allegedly use this as a rough proxy index of oil quality. I've seen some independent peer-reviewed-journal research that seems to support this.
  • 56 Mazda6 2.0D sakata - Mazda6 DPF light flashing plz help 30 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Hi I bought a 56 Mazda6 2.0D sakata last week from a garage who also changed the oil and filter and now the dpf light is flashing. The previous owner had it as a company car and did over 25k a year and i also drive mainly motorway miles and over 2000rpm and since ive had it the oil level has actually come down slightly and is below full so no problem with oil level and no power loss.
  • Morris - Minor 1955 998 water in the oil 18 May 2009 (Forum)
I was advised that this was a classic case of a blown cylinder head gasket. I got a gasket kit and changed all the top end gaskets and for a week or so everything seemed to be fine but, I checked the oil yesterday and it seemed a bit high, considering the various oil leaks she has, then I checked the radiator and there was no water visible.
  • the Castrol advert that has appeared on this site. 21 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Or is this just PR mumbo jumbo to let the mind numbed consumer think their oil is better than everyone elses, and that is in fact just pumped around the engine by the oil pump. The majority of my engine is alloy anyway, thus non-magnetic. ASDA's own brand is also A1 spec, although 10W40 and hasnt let me down in 2 years of use (3 oil changes) I suspect that a 5W30 would just leak out the seals of a 2000 plate engine anyway.
  • Oil filters 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
My old Polo started making some intermittent tapping noises from the rocker cover after I did an oil change and used (for the first time ever) a non-VW oil filter. It was a Sunday and my VW garage was shut so I popped down to the local branch of a well known car assessory shop and got one of their filters.
  • VW Golf Mk4 PD (130) Diesel Manual - Service/Oil Light 27 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Good Afternoon, due to illness I have not used my VW much during the last year. Up until now I have always had the oil/filter changed one month before the MOT date, the annual  mileage has always been 4 to 5 thousand. I noticed a few weeks ago the SERVICE/OIL warning flashed to alert me when there was 2000 miles to go until service. After further use the warning changed to 1900 to go.

  • Nissan Almera Tino (2000 - 2006) - 02 1.8 twin cam oil usage 25 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi, had my Nissan Tino about 6 months now very reliable car the only thing is it uses a lot of oil, i had the oil changed about Xmas and im constantly topping it up every 3 - 4 weeks ,when i collected it from the service the fellow told me from empty to full it only holds 2.7 litres of oil so a gallon would nearly do you two changes ,its not leaking any where and it just went through its MoT before Xmas and no blue smoke from exhaust and 57000 miles on the clock its a 1.8 twin cam s model 2002 .....and does any one know the proper oil that goes in them its just different car part shops are telling me different types the person who done the service said he put 20/40 semi synthetic in it thx Year and engine type put in - we should start asking people to do that themselves !
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - Auto gearbox oil 23 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Due for a gearbox filter and oil change soon. In the past I have always used Dexron 11, and 138k later it seems to have served me well. I have considered Dextron 111, as this is newer and washers whiter, but while chatting at a MB dealership to a MB mechanic, he stated that on older (1992) cars, they still used Dextron 11.
  • VAG Servicing 7 Nov 2006 (Forum)
My 2003 SEAT Ibiza this evening started flashing INSP when I started to drive it home this evening- even though I changed the oil and filter, air filter and plugs when I got it 4 months/400miles ago/ When you delve inot the handbook it says it needs a maintenance service whatever one of those is as opposed to just an oil change when it would have just flashed OIL- my question is should I just ignore it as it had a minor service 4 months ago or would it need more things doing to it as it specified by SEAT?
  • 1995 FIAT Punto GT turbo gearbox 24 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Got talked into changing pads and discs for a friend today. Afterwards he mentioned his intention to change the gearbox oil (still listed by FIAT as maintenance item). He intended adding Molyslip, but I suggested instead using sythetic gearoil.

  • Engine Flush 25 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Would anyone recommend getting an engine flush when you get an oil change. I see that one of the major garages has an offer on for £5.95 engine flush, but i'm not sure if it is worth having if there are no problems with the car and oil.

  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - 03 1.4 Gearbox Bearings and G/box oil changes. 8 Nov 2013 (Forum)
On the grounds that it is better late than never, my immediate reaction is to have my gearbox oil changed immediately. Main Dealer's cost for doing anything is horrific. Is there a particular oil that I should ask local inde' to use for this job? TIA
  • Corolla vvti old advice 23 Dec 2006 (Forum)
At the same time I was getting a sound from the top of the engine which I suspect was camshaft noise as the oil was not lubricating the camshaft correctly. Now the oil is topped up the noise has disapeared but I want to change the oil this weekend and instead of the 5/30 oil that is recomened would I be better using a 10/40 oil that is thicker at working temperatures so that the cam lubrication is improved.
