  • Parked car heaters - any news? 1 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I know it's a perennial thread, but I would be interested to learn any latest experience of Backroomers with parked car heaters, whether of the Kenlowe variety (in-line coolant heater powered from the 240V mains), or Webasto (burns the car's own fuel in an auxiliary heater). As I understand it both types heat both the coolant and vehicle interior, but the Webasto unit is stand-alone - doesn't need a mains connection and can be remote controlled or even phone controlled.
  • Another punto head gasket 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have been going through about a lire of oil every 800-1000 miles, and Havr recently noticed that my coolant level has dropped, COuld this be a head gasket problem? There is no white gunk around the oil or coolant caps, but it does get a decent motorway run (150 miles) most weekends. The car is a Y reg Punto MK2 1.2 8v and has covered 24000 miles.
  • VW Polo 1.2 2004 - Tricky coolant leak 6 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Hi all. My polo has been losing coolant for around 2 years now and I’m struggling to find the source of the leak. It needs topping up around once a week (I drive for around 30 minutes each day). There is no visible leak from the car when cold or hot, and the entire system has been pressured tested when hot and cold by both the AA and an independent garage.
  • Hyundai Santa Fe - Thermo-dynamics of diesel automatics 19 Nov 2013 (Forum)
So is this heat gain from the engine doing a lot more work, as it obviously is, or is it from the transmission heat affecting the engine temperature via the coolant ?
  • Citroen Saxo - Head gasket 24 Sep 2012 (Forum)
This was the first time the coolant light had come on and there had been no other indications that the engine was over heating. Several questions: a) Would the head gasket not have been changed when the cambelt was? b) If so, is it normal to only last 18 months?
  • Ford Focus 2004 - Temp gauge issue !!! 8 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Ok, so just bought my focus and noticed slight coolant leak, turned out to be thermostat housing, new coolant, new housing all sorted.  Car starts and runs fine temperature gauge moves up to correct central position then whilst driving it drops back down to cold, few minutes later back up to the centre ??
  • Toyota Carina E (1992 - 1997) - 95 1.6 Expansion tank tube missing? 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Bought a nice low mileage Carina off of a friends dad, and I have a question about the coolant expansion tank. The coolant level in this was just over full, however when I unscrewed the actual radiator cap I noticed that the coolant level in the radiator was well below the fins, so I topped this up.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 2000 1.5 Coolant Temperature light - on or off? 5 Apr 2009 (Forum)
.********* Trouble is I have now noticed the coolant temperature warning light on the dash board does not light up when the ignition in turned on. I'm pretty sure it was coming on before but I can't be certain. I have an older 1995 106 XND and the light does come on with the ignition and goes off when the engine starts.
  • MG MG TF (2002 - 2005) - 04 1.6 Coolant leaking and heater hot all the time 24 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Know what you will all be thinking but she is my baby!!! I recently noticed that water was leaking from the coolant system and it was using about a tank of water per day. The fans in the car also seemed to be blowing in hot air even when they weren't on.......Took it the garage (worried to death it was going to be the usual HG probs).
  • Vauxhall Omega Coolant Level 11 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I have a 1997 Vauxhall Omega 2.5V6 Auto, and up until now it has been fine - but over the weekend I got the 'Coolant Level' warning on the trip computer (and I had filled it up just the day before). I looked at the level later that evening and it was full. Driving the car on Monday, I had the same message come up several times, and I also noticed that the temperature gauge went from zero to about the halfway mark in about 10 minutes (while my BMW takes about 20minutes or so).
  • Rover 216 Overheating 29 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Four days ago I detect that the hose that goes from the radiator to the engine was disconnected (I was driving at 50 mph and hear an extrange noise from the engine and then I pull my car out of the road and smell an horrible odor (coolant) ). I wait for the hose to cool then I reconnect it and refill the coolant. I started my car and everything seems normal. Since that moment I note that the engine generates an extrange vibration, like it is working in 3 cilinders or something like that.
  • Help! Xantia Coolant leak 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Was sitting waiting for SWMBO to meet for lunch when I noticed some steam coming from the engine. Opened the bonnet and found it was mostly white where coolant (I assume) has squirted all over the engine bay. There's a small fracture in the rubber pipe that is on the top right of the engine and this is where it's escaping from. I've posted a picture of the problem click here . or http://www.btinternet.com/~harkis/help.html I just need to know what the pipe is (it seems to end up at the radiator) and how much I could expect to pay to have it repaired at an independent.
  • Xantia coolant temperature 23 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Hi to everyone! I have a '96 1.9TD, over the last couple of days the coolant temp has started fluctuating quite fast between 80 and 90 on the gauge upon acceleration/swifter driving at any speed. Returns to 80 at more constant speed/standstill within a minute or two. Rad/pipes are hot so I assume the thermostat (~1yr old, opens at 83?)
  • Ford Mondeo Mk3 - Tdci - Strange overheating problem, only at speed 4 Jun 2018 (Forum)
      - Have had the thermostat replaced yesterday, coolant bled through - all pipes seem warm where they should be, suggesting coolant flow and working thermostat with no airlocks.   - There are no leaks (oil or coolant), coolant levels remain high.

  • Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - Warning of impending car breakdown 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My VW Touran is 5 years old. Every couple of months it requires an engine coolant top up. When the coolant level falls just below MIN, the Multi-Function Display shows a dramatic "STOP - replace engine coolant" warning sign, which makes it difficult to forget to put in the requisite fluid.
