  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Decisions, decisions..which one? 27 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Is the Focus £2000 better than the Focus, bearing in mind this will be a second car for 'er indoors to do the school run.
  • another disabled parking question 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
If he parked there because he has the badge in his car, but chose to get out of his car in order to run an errand, and the disabled passenger stayed where she was, is this an abuse of the system and if seen, can a traffic warden challenge the driver as to why he parked where he did? I can fully understand it if the parked there to allow the lady to get out and walk a few feet to the front door of the shop/office/bank etc, but how is it perceived if this was for purely his own purposes.
  • Computer Related Questions - Volume 161 [ReadOnly] 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Evenin' all My eldest daughter has been moaning about intermittant internet connection speeds, checked her PC and it seems it is sometimes connecting to someone else's network; speed is fine when it is connected to mine. The PC is running Win XP home SP2, the WiFi adaptor is a Belkin 802.11 b/g USB jobbie. Poking around in the windows zero configuration options I can find no way of forcing the connection to only use the preferred access point.
  • Austin (Rover) Mini (1972 - 2001) - 95 1.3 smokin electrics 30 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have an older car I don't use much. The battery was running low so I removed it and trickle charged it on a ' clever ' charger until it was fully juiced . On connecting it back to the car , suddenly smoke emerged from the engine bay - I quickly disconnected it...
  • Mercedes Benz V-Class (1996 - 2003) - 02 2.2cdi air con failure vito van 29 Aug 2008 (Forum)
One has worn through and was leaking oil the other seems ok. Could i still use the van until i can get it fixed?. I know it shoudnt be run without gas and oil. Do i need to do more than simply not turn on the air con switch on the dash or do i need to remove fuses etc?
  • Heathrow Airport T3 parking for 7 days? 15 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Looking at the Long Stay parking on the BAA website, is it as secure and convenient as the website says? Do the buses run on time? Is it worth paying an extra £30 (over long stay) to use the business parking? We should (hopefully!) not be on a tight schedule time-wise. Are the off-airport competitors any good, such as Q-park?
  • SEAT Ibiza III (2002 - 2008) - Cracks in tyre tread 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So I took the wheel off yesterday and in one of the tread grooves, there's an alarming looking open crack that runs right around the tyre. It's a Dunlop SP Sport 2000E, and came with the car new and has done 33K miles in 4yrs - on the NSR of the car, and it still has plenty of tread left. It's never been over or under inflated and the tyre on the opposite side (same details) looks fine.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 2004 1.9d Charging system woes 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I've checked all the relative connections/earth straps etc for corrosion/security all okay the only thing thats bothering me is the light purple wire that runs on to a plug on the alternator.I traced this wire back to the fuse-box thats located alongside the battery, checked for continuity(ok). The wire is completely dead, does this charging circuit require a 12volt feed from the fuse box to excite the alternator?
  • Daewoo Matiz (1998 - 2004) - 02 .8 Smokey on cold start up 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have a 2002 Daewoo matiz that has a strange defect, when you start it up from cold e.g. standing overnight (even this summer) it belches out smoke for abot 3 seconds to a minute, after that its fine and runs smothly without problems at all even if I stop and start again within a houtr or two, but if I leave it for a good length of time or over night it just belches out smoke again. This is an embarasment more than anything and if I reve the engine a little to try and clear it I smoke out the street.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 02 2ltr cutting out randomly 9 Aug 2008 (Forum)
My BMW E46 2002 cuts out after a mile after starting, its a total loss of ignition only the battery light comes on,no others, if travelling fast enough when the pedal is pressed it will continue on and the light goes out, some time it will stall completely, if the car is turned off then will restart, sometimes it has to be locked and wait for 5 mins or so the will restart. this is intermittent, and does not leave any fault codes, the car runs sweet as a nut, other than when it dies. I have changed both the cam sensors, and im going to get the crank sensor tomorrow, if this does not cure it then i need a few suggestions Thanks Darren
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2000 1.4 Brake overhaul-bleeding 7 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Helping a friend bleed his brakes after he had fitted new rear discs and pads and despite having bled all 4 wheels we can get no pedal at all when the engine is running. There is something there before you start the engine but when you do the pedal goes straight to the floor. A few points to note:- i/he had the calipers off the car to wind the pistons back ii/ he noticed a split servo hose and replaced this.
  • Talk me out of this 6 Aug 2008 (Forum)
That car has lost some 90% of its original list price in 45 months. That's almost £500 per month. A nearly-new car for beer money. And it apparently runs on SVO... Glass's gives Part-exchange Price: Excellent condition: £3000 Average condition: £2680 Below average condition: £2360 Downsides: It does only seem to have been serviced every 15-18k, against recommended 12k - and HJ's recommendation of twice that frequent.
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - Scrapping a driveable car: economic sense? 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
And is cosmetically bad, with scratched bodywork and front bumper repaired with insulation tape. And that's before the MOT test. It runs OK, though. Should/when it fails its MOT. Any ideas for scrap values in the North of England? Thanks Mike
  • Alfa Romeo 159 (2006 - ) - Alfa 5 pot Diesel Cambelts 31 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Very nice car at London Motorhow with Auto and the most beautiful red paint and leather I have seen in a car. 210 BHp and the promise of 40 mpg on a run sounds good.HOWEVER I remember reading that a cambelt change for this engine requires the lump to be lifted out of the engine. I shudder to think of the cost.I remember driving a Marea estate hire car a few years ago with the petrol 5 and it looked tight in the bay.
  • How hot can cars get? 31 Jul 2008 (Forum)
My car stood in the sun for three hours after a gentle motorway run of 40 km. When we got in it the dash temp gauge read 39 degrees C Ambled back at gentle 70 and at home thought I would check my oil. Well I still have red but not blistered marks on two fingers and one thumb off the bonnet prop !!!
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1995 1.3 Idle problems/overfuelling? 28 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi all A friend is having trouble with his old mk3 Fiesta - the idle speed is too low so, although it runs okay on the open road, slowing down for junctions etc. requires fancy footwork! I initially thought the idle control valve would be at fault, however he turned up in it yesterday and it's spluttering and blowing black smoke, which would suggest overfuelling?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2000 1.6 would a blowing exhaust cause??? 20 Jul 2008 (Forum)
i have just changed oil & filter, air filter, re set gap on spark plugs, and checked HT leads for Arc-ing. car idles fine on rev counter and runs fine, however when idleing it appears to miss every 4-5 seconds (counter does not move), causing the whole car to vibrate, it also sounds like pop pop sound from the centre exhaust box, i noticed the other day that this seemed to be blowing, however it was only replaced in december.
  • Nissan Terrano II (1993 - 2005) - 1994 2.7 Clutch 15 Jul 2008 (Forum)
It happens that there has been a piece of the pipe which has rotted away causing the leak. When it has been looked at it seems that where the pipe runs to the back of the car towards the rear wheel the pipe has come away from (where it is suposed to go) and there is something missing from the end of the pipe which is preventing the pipe from being re connected.
  • Monday moan about car parks 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
It means if the bay in front of you is empty, you can't drive forwards and out, oh no that'd be too simple. Instead you have to waste more fuel and time reversing out and run the increased risk of being rear ended by Darren in his knackered Saxo racing up to get to Halfords before they shut! Aaaagh. thank you, rant over.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 07 1.6HDI - cuts out it's only 20 months old 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
hoe the problem happs is that it warms it as any car would normally, then the engine management system light comes on you can then drive it for around 2 more minutes then it cuts out.. you can normally re-start and it will go for around 30 yards and cut out again. if you turn it over and leave it standing it runs but as soon as you put the revs up to 2000 it cuts out? anyone any ideas o and it normally cuts out when it is going uphill..
