'Performance' brake discs 25 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Call my cynical but I can't see them improving braking performance by very much. I can appreciate that the discs might run cooler, but brake pads seem to be specified up to about 600 deg. C. so you would have to be seriously working your brakes to need this extra cooling. I can't see how they would reduce the stopping distance "by up to 40%" in normal, or even very fast, road driving. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.6 (8v) Where does the oil disappear to? 21 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Whenever i check my sister's car after a few months the oil level is below minimum. There is no oil stain on the ground or around the engine bay. When starting, running or setting off there is no blue smoke. The oil level warning light comes on as you start the car then goes off quickly. This has been happening for a year now. Naturally i top it up but it takes ages to register on the dipstick. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 Snick when engine warm when accelerating 17 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Seems to happen in all gears if you suddenly put your foot on the gas. In diagnostic mode I am getting around 13.7v so think everything is charging ok. Am running out of ideas now - it's just an annoying problem. Any ideas? Thanks! -
What is reliability ? 31 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Also what do people thing defines lack of reliability, recently had to replace a switch on my car as it broke, some people would be saying the car was unreliable but I just took it as one of those things you get on running a nine year old car which has done over 100,000 miles. -

Silent danger. 29 Aug 2009 (Forum)
No, not the results of a recent curry engorgement but another story in the Manchester Evening News. 5 year old girl walked off the kerb in her own road and smack into the side of a Prius running on electric. Fortunately it was only doing about 10 mph as it was a council 'patrol ' car looking for ASB etc. Little girl received cut and grazes, presumably from the tarmac and told her mum and police that she didn't hear a car coming. -
Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - Accident: KA3 written off-nd bigger - suggestions? 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Hi guys My beloved Ford KA3 got rear ended and need some suggestions for a replacement but bigger vehicle? I have a budget of £5k and with a baby on the way want low running costs (Tax, Tyres, Servicing, Repairs) but with a bit more space for "stuff". Any thoughts from any happy trade ins? Currently thinking Ford Fiesta or Mazda2 (expensive parts?)? Some thing reliable with the same nippiness as the KA (dont need a hugely powerful beast - just more of the same but bigger)? -

New car for the mother-in-law!! 10 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The prices are too high for the father-in-law, who arrived at my place last night with a brochure for the Nissan Pixo (a foul thing by all accounts). So the brief is it has to be super-cheap to buy (<£8500) and run for the FIL, and has to be reasonably stylish and comfortable for the MIL. In addition to the Ka/Fiesta, I've told her to have a look at the following - Hyundai i20 / i30 and Toyota Aygo (and clones) Are there any others they should be looking at? -
Drive way fine in petty Britain 30 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Seeing as long as no car encroached on the bit of footpath in front of their home, what are the council counting as public highway... the strip of grass that runs across the front of their houses ?. If that is the case, I'd be tempted to drive a vehicle up and down that bit of so called highway. Bet the council would have something to say about that as well. -
Ford Mondeo 1 (1993 - 1996) - 96 1.8 Can a leaking diesel pump be fixed? 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Hi The diesel pump on my Mk1 mondeo and is losing alot of diesel while the engine is running. I thought initially the patch my car was leaving on the ground was power steering fluid, but I've been told by National garage staff that it's the diesel pump that is leaking. The leak has now become much worse and leaves a constant trail wherever I go. -
Road closures after crashes. 6 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I see as a result of a crash between a police car on a training run and an ambulance in the highlands the road was closed for nearly 12 hours ,surely this is a bit over the top , it was all in daylight hours so no hold up there . I realise a reasonable time is needed but a closure of this lenth of time which means a 70 mile detour I dont see the need for . what are they going to find after 10 hours that couldnt be found in 6 for example ? -
Bugatti Veyron (2005 - ) - Credit Crunch Victim? 21 May 2009 (Forum)
Would it be easy to do more than 621 miles in one of these in Britain? Surely if you bought one of these you would have at least taken it on a right good run, say a London to Edinburgh and back? Wonder if there are any owners who actually use it as their day to day transport? -
Vehicle Presence 17 May 2009 (Forum)
Despite its size, I could make faster progress through London in that Tranny than I could in the Metro I was running as a private car at the time. Can small or medium-sized cars have any presence? People notice me in the CC3 with the roof down, but I don't think that's the same thing. What are your thoughts on presence? -
Toyota Avensis (1997 - 2002) - 02 1.6 1.6 vvti noisy top end ....timing chain? 17 May 2009 (Forum)
It seems to be coming from the centre of the head, and I was wondering if this is where the timing chain is located, as I understanad that it is hydrualically tensioned and if it has run low on oil will need replacing. If so then this makes ther car far less attractive. Apart from this noise the car drives fine and has no obvious other problems. Any comments as to likely cause and repair cost, or is it a walk away scenario? -
Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - 95 1905 Air in diesel supply 9 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi. I repaired the deisel run off pipes a couple of weekends ago. Since then I have had difficulty starting and have to prime the fuel supply if the car has been standing for six hours or more. It starts fine when I squeeze the priming pump several times. -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.2 emulsion in the oil reservoir 7 May 2009 (Forum)
It also keeps losing water and over heating, although there is no evidence under the car even when running, i'm assuming there is a leak in the cooling system but I'm more concerned about the oil reservoir at the moment. I've no idea when it last had an oil change and service, she's in denial and wont let me talk about it! -
KIA Magentis (2006 - 2009) - 20 2.0 Gearbox oil 29 Apr 2009 (Forum)
After the unfortunate demise of MrMazda's 323f in a low speed crash, I followed the example of the chap mentioned in "car by car" for Kia Magentis and bought an ex dealer nearly 7000 mile one cheap as chips. Having done 15000 miles of my own, I want to follow HJ "running in" advice and change the Gearbox oil - is the drain plug on the left (as you look from the front) of the 2.0LS petrol engine? Do you just drain some gear oil and replace the same amount? Where do you put the new oil? -
FIAT Panda (2003 - ) - 07 1.1 as a second car ? 28 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The idea being this would be our runaround car, some local commuting, shops, local trips with the odd longer run. And most importantly, low insurance for both my teenagers to learn in. It's either this or something a good few years older such as a Yaris, for around £1.5 to £2K - Yaris because of bulletproof reputation and all round good reviews. -
dangerous cars seen on the road 26 Apr 2009 (Forum)
This isn't the first time I have seen some dodgey cars on the road. How do people get away with this ? If it was me with a dodgy car my luck would have run out along time ago. Has anyone else seen 'driving death traps' ?
