User Roadtest - New Polo 14 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Surprise no 2 was the engine - maybe mine had been flogged to death as a courtesy car, but I don't know where all the 'peppy' performance the reviews I read had gone - mind you, since it weighs as much as a Golf IV, 65bhp isn't a lot... but at least it's fairly smooth. The fuel economy wasn't brilliant, mind. The biggest shock was the handling, though. I have previously driven the Fabia with the 1.4 100bhp engine, and was pleasantly impressed - smooth over bumps but with good grip. -
Jaguar series 3, V12, starting problem 4 Jul 2004 (Forum)
On trying to restart the car, after turning over the engine for about 5 seconds, the electrics shut down. The car was started by turning the ignition swith to II (to run the fuel pump) and bypassing the starting relay and the circuit that controls the relay - the engine fired straight away and ran smoothly. The car was fitted by Lancaster Mayfair in 1991 with a Sonar Auto Alarm and we are wondering if the alarm has tripped and is somehow preventing the car from starting on the ignition switch. -
Golf Mk 4 Rear brake binding 17 May 2004 (Forum)
I didnt notice this until I got home, but what I did notice on the way home was worse than expected fuel economy on the Multi function display, and really bad squealling from the rear brakes, which was partly silenced by sharp application of h/brake while in forward motion. I've had the wheel off, cant see anythng wrong, except excessive binding. -
Shock horror - it's the 80p gallon! 9 May 2004 (Forum)
As increasing tensions in the Middle East continued to drive up oil prices, the average British price of unleaded reached 80.2p, the first time it has exceeded 80p since December 2000, shortly after the fuel protests....." (that'll be 80p a litre then...:) ) and here's what I wrote to Mr Paul Marston, tongue firmly in cheek: "Dear Mr Marston May I suggest an interesting business venture? I agree an 80p gallon is extremely expensive, particularly when you reflect that is 16 shillings a gallon whereas it was more like 7/6 at decimalisation. -
Pug 306TD tacho sensor/wiring 30 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I would be very grateful if any other pug306 diesel owners (with tacho display) could measure the resistance of their tacho unit (with crankshaft sensor disconnected). This plug/socket connection is below the fuel filter, and has a 3 plug connector, with the two left most pins only used. Any suggestions/ideas most welcome. Cheers -
Fiat Panda 24 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I looked (from a distance) at the CityRover and decided to steer clear because of a) equipment levels; b) insurance grouping; c) fuel economy. Compared to the Panda it was, for me, a no-brainer. The Panda cost just over £5,900 with metallic paint and is group 1E insurance. It's got front electric windows (with one-touch on driver's side), a fairly decent quality radio-cassette, comfortable seats, and a surprisingly nippy engine. -
Impreza WRX - shall I, shan't I 10 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The one real exception was about 15 years ago when I had a Golf Gti 16V (Mk2 I think) - a revelation to me at that time. So on the basis I want something enjoyable to drive above fuel economy, space etc I'm looking at the Impreza WRX - recent threads on reliability and good residuals back up that this mightn't be a bad choice. The main thing that concerns me though is if this is a car that attracts unwanted attention from the police and thieves. -
Cossie problems 31 Jan 2004 (Forum)
After the 35ml journey home again I was really toiling (the problem seems to get worse the as the journey goes on) and I was reluctant to risk running the car back to them again. I took the car to a local garage, who couldn't find anything much wrong, apart from a rusty fuel tank which was leaking and subsequently replaced. The symptoms I have now is that the car starts and ticks over ok, but won't accelerate above 3000 rpm and backfires through the exhaust if you do push the pedal down. -
Taxi! 14 Dec 2003 (Forum)
In English, that's approximately 116,250 miles, or about 13,000 miles a month, which equates to the approximate frequency of 'annual' service. Average fuel consumption coverts to a pretty impressive 44 MPG. The cabbie's previous car was a petrol Volvo 740, which his son then purchased, and which has clocked up over 1,300,000 km (800,000 miles). The engine and auto gearbox are originals, and have never been taken apart beyond routine servicing, although the engine barely scraped through the annual Swedish emissions test this year. -
Fiesta mk 3 poor starter 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
The Engine management system took a long time to "kick in" again and a week or so later i started having problems getting it to start. It would turn over fine, fire and then die. I was then advised to pull out fuse 20 ( fuel inj) when this happened - start the car....engine will then stall......put fuse back and start it again and it went fine. As this was intermittent i was relatively happy to continue doing this. However, things have now progressed!! -
Mondeo TDCI 19 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I go back into the service reception and a technician comes out to see for himself that the car doesn't fire up on the trun of the key. He said it seemed like a fuel supply problem and that they would want it back for another days worth of testing. There doesn't seem to be any posts on this site that give a solution to this problem and it sounds like ford still don't know what causes it. -
Peugeot problems...:( 13 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I also started to hear a horrendous noise from the engine and severe power loss, no warning lights (the best way to describe it would be that when I reved the engine it sounded like a diesel truck rather than a car..diesel engine noise x5) then after ten miles it just stopped. I asked some mechanic friends and they said at a guess it was bad fuel clogging the injector and the engine was flooded and must have blown it out.Which made sense as on Tuesday the car was jumping all over the place after filling up with petrol the night before. With the noise now gone and therefore nothing to check we left to come back down only to get as far a Gretna when the noise and pulling, misfiring started again. -
rover 420 GSI (high Emissions) 6 Sep 2003 (Forum)
But I remember some years ago having a MG EFI montego and these used to suffer from blowing the earth pin inside the ECU, normally this was easy to repair, (I use to be a TV & Video Technician so I have all the skills with the soldering iron), I wondered if this ECU suffers from the same problems, I know the Montego one could be done buy using a battery charger. The montego suffered very similar problems, very high fuel consumption, erratic idle etc and same again the sensor voltage were all floating. Any help would be welcome. Regards Ken -
Help, 2l Carlton loss of power 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Could the exhaust be partially blocked choking the engine? would this cause high temp / pinking ? Fuel filter blocked ? How do you check? There does not appear to be water in the oil or oil in the water although it has lost a little coolant lately. Does all of this stink of head gasket failure !?! -
Renault Laguna 1 1.9dTi Cambelt 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have experience of changing the cambelt on a 1.9dti I have just replaced mine, complete with new idler pulleys, couple of odd things, first checked out timing marks, i.e. crank tdc, pegged crank with timing pin in cyl. block, fuel injector pump, ok. but noted camshaft alighment to pointer on camcover appeared 1 notch out. Although engine running fine. I've fitted new belt and left marks as i found them, and all still seems fine, plenty of power, no smoke, or starting problems just seemed strange. -
Dealer Workshop has bent my car 6 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I took my W Peugeot 406 to the dealer today for a new fuel filler cap, it has only been faulty since April, and finally they managed to get me one the right colour, ( they have already lost 3 )I handed over my keys and waited patiently whilst they took the car in. -
DIY Cam Belt - Diesel Astra 4 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Haynes describe a procedure involving special Vauxhall tools, and a Dial Test Indicator to time the camshaft and fuel injector. Has anybody done this job themselves? If so, is it not possible to carefully mark the old belt prior to removal (at crank, injector and cam), transfer these marks to the new belt, fitting it so that they all line up with no slack? -

Corolla Carb Question for Tune Up Boys 28 Nov 2002 (Forum)
SWMBO has recently purchased a 1990 Toyota Corolla GL Estate (1.3 litre). The car is fine apart from the fact that it idles much too fast (1400 rpm) and is a bit heavy on fuel. I assumed that this would be a simple matter of adjusting the fast running screw on the carburettor, but when I came to do the job, it was obvious that (a) the idle adjusting screw was not playing any part in the idle setting as it wasn't contacting the throttle linkage and (b) the carburettor was a much more complex beast than I was expecting, with a dashpot, cam breaker, choke breaker etc. -
Daihatsu Charade 1.0 Expert needed. 6 Nov 2002 (Forum)
When travelling recently, it burnt alot of oil (2.5litres) going over some mountain roads for 2000-3000km but the after accidentally filling it over full with oil it stopped doing so - the really steep mountains also stopped then. The fuel comsumption also varies dramatically - never really living upto what I expected. I realise that labour rates will differ here but what do the experts think is wrong here and what time should it take to rectify.
