motoring 50s-60s style , at low cost (motorcycle) 27 Aug 2009 (Forum)
as some of you might know , I LIKE my old motorcycles , one brand in particular , is the enfield , and the bullet model. I posted this on another website , and the modern bikers , with fuel injection and elleccy ign could not grasp it: "I thought that the replacement enfield engine was a bit sluggish , almost like a sticky ring , comp was there on k/start , but did not have a guage handy to check. -
Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 91 1.6 Swapping the standard speedo for a GTi one? 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
My peugeot 205 XL has a standard clock unit, on the left hand side is an Analogue clock, in the middle is the speedo and on the right of the clock face is the Fuel Gauge, with all the warning lights above in a row... Ok... lol QUESTION: Can you replace this standard unit with a GTI type clock which has a temp gauge and a rev counter etc unlike the standard clock? -
Renault Espace (1985 - 1997) - 94 2.0 Engine loses power for a second or two 12 Jul 2009 (Forum)
My guesses are ignition (I'll get it a new coil lead soon, since the original is old and stiff and 15 years old), fuel supply or engine management electronics. Is it practical for a DIY owner to get anything useful out of the "diagnostic" connector in the engine bay, for example, and will it do any good for this sort of thing? -
Taking the cash or not 7 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Previously for the last 15 years i have been a company car user with varying cars through the years. Like many i now have the option of taking cash benefit along with repayment for the fuel i use on business mileage. As a newbie to this i like many hit the net but with about 20,000,000 options i have thankfully stumbled on this site and hope your help will be useful in my search for sanity. -
Diesel engine destroying itself? 6 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I've only seen similar to this once before when i saw a Discovery 1 sitting on the side of a dual carriageway revving itself to death..but that i seem to recall was white smoke, which i believe would be pure excess diesel and not oil being burnt. Wasn't there a problem with seals going on Discovery/Defender fuel pumps that could cause this? I may well be wrong..much to the amazement of regulars here..;) Now i ruminated over this for a while as you do and tried to work out the best way to stop this occurring once a diesel engine has started to consume itself, i have a theory which would require nerves of steel and would probably be impossible in an automatic. -
Toyota Aygo (2005 - ) - Toyota Aygo Blue OR Ford Ka? 27 May 2009 (Forum)
My current small car is a 1998 Nissan Micra 1.3 GX, but it really is starting to get old. It struggles to hit 60mph, it has a very poor safety rating, the fuel economy can't be brilliant, and the central locking is now completely bust. I've narrowed my choice of a new car down to the brand-new 2009 Ford Ka Style, and the newly restyled 2009 Toyota AYGO Blue, but I'm really unsure which to get, because the reviews they get are quite similar, and they seem to be getting 4/5 stars everywhere. -
Checking the integrity of your trip computer 1 May 2009 (Forum)
And it was just the same on my previous (similar model) car. The other thing I've noticed is that although the average fuel consumption display is capable of reading to 0.1 mpg, when the reading changes it invariably changes by 0.4 or 0.5 mpg. For example, it will show 38.2 mpg, 38.7 mpg or 39.2 mpg but never anything between. -
Ford Mondeo 1 (1993 - 1996) - 95 1.8 Help! Car's dead! 12 Apr 2009 (Forum)
There doesn't appear to be anything loose or hanging off anywhere. In the past year it has had the alternator , fuel filter, oil filter, HT leads and spark plugs replaced. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Many thanks ;-) -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - Idiot question - disposing of a car. 12 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The question is this: my trusty R reg 1.4 Corsa Breeze has finally given up the ghost. While technically still servicable for a month or so, it's got a fuel leak, the brakes are wearing badly and the estimate is that it'll take at least £500 to get it through its next MOT, and other factors (rusting bodywork) will mean it almost certainly won't get through next years. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 1995 1.4 Strange Goings On 16 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The central locking stopped working for a while and now it is back working again, I imagine this has something to do with it. 2. The dashboard lights have gone on the RPM counter, as well as almost all on the fuel and oil gauges. They were going for a while, but then all of a sudden came on, now they have failed completely. I also have a fog light out at the moment, could that be something to do with it? I am replacing that tomorrow. 3. -
Toyota Corolla Verso (2004 - 2009) - Potential purchase 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I was wondering whether it might be best to sit tight for 2.0 05/55 D4D T3 for a similar mileage/price or a diesel Spirit with+40K on the clock. I guess the fuel/service costs vs economy pretty much cancel themselves out on my annual mileage, 4-5k a year 60% of which is city driving. . I've driven both the Petrol and the Diesel and apart from the obvious Torque differences can't say I noticed a whole lot of difference. -
Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 00 1.25 Genuine V Factor coil packs - worth the ex 10 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Changing the spark plug and swappning HT leads did not move the misfire from No. 2 cylinder, so I decided to change the coil pack. I was keen to do this quickly to prevent unburnt fuel from damaging the cat. A genuine Ford coil pack from the main dealer was about £60 but I bought one from a factor for £30. It solved the problem and it works fine but I'm interested in whether anyone has an opinion on the performance or longevity of such factor parts compared to Ford ones? -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.8 MAF readings? 6 Oct 2008 (Forum)
hey, was wondering whether anybody knew the correct readings for the maf sensor on a 1.8 petrol zetec-e engine at idle and at wot (in lbs/min). need to check whether mine is functioning correctly as im having acceleration problems even though ive changed the whole ignition system and fuel delivery is fine and theres no vacuum leaks.. the car is an '03 with 42000 miles on the clock.. did a few tests on it, basically with the maf connected, the exhaust tone is sputtery at idle and when u blip the throttle WOT, it pings.. engine doesnt sound smooth either, coupled with the poor acceleration... -
Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - Scuba Diving - Don't use a Honda...... 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
So now I have up to £ 10 K to play with for a SH replacement. I want the same EX spec as my Accord, ie leather , satnav, cruise control but something less fuel gulping than the 2.4 engine and without the possible £ 400 tax in the future. Although I don't mind one way or the other I think a diesel is the best option , I want at least a 2 litre and I prefer Japanese reliability. -
Aircon Compressor HP 8 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Or maybe the compressor is switched on and off from the engine drive and inside the car you don't notice the loading/unloading on the engine My gut feeling is that most cars have a basic compressor and that selecting cold air whether you use some or all of it means you pay full price of energy usage in fuel economy. If so it's not very green and efficient. -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - HDi Pollution fault 17 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I have put additive into the tank 3 times when the car goes into limp mode, I tried the primer pump and there is plenty of fuel getting to the high pressure pump. I disconnected each plug of the injectors, she is off number 2 and 3 injector completely, if you take 1 or 4 injectors off, the engine stalls. The engine gets a good long run all the time and gets a good blow out. -
Which company car to choose ? 13 Jul 2008 (Forum)
2) I would like the company car tax to be as low as possible. 3) I would like it to be reasonably economical, as I will be paying fuel for private mileage. I will still have access to my old car, a Vauxhall Astra diesel, as my wife will get this. 4) If the car could feel special in some way - something like leather seats, 'climate control', cruise control, or 'sporty appearance', this would be a bonus. -
Glove box and other cubby hole contents? 21 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Quite a lot of nicotine chewing gum ( hasn't worked yet :-( ) A bicycle puncture repair kit ( must have been there since last Summers holiday ) A pack of business cards (for a company I did some temporary work for three years ago) Some old fuel receipts ( my goodness it used to be cheap ! ) A remote control for my Tom Tom ( hadn't remembered it had one ) Some replacement bulbs ( for my old car ) A tyre depth gauge ( why would I feel the urgent need to stop and check that mid-journey? -
Trip around Europe - £4k vehicle? 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
There has to be enough room for 4 people (3 guys, 1 girl) to travel relatively comfortably with enough room for at least 2 tents, 4 rucksacks of kit, and a jerry can. Basically, we're looking for the most spacious, fuel efficient, reliable car that we can find for under £4,000, that'll be relatively easy (and cheap!) to fix /if/ it breaks. If any of you have any ideas then please, please let us know! It will be very much appreciated! -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Servicing - Should the wheels come off? 19 May 2008 (Forum)
I have the Focus and a Sorento. Neither has the wheel nut torque settings in the owners handbook. Full of fictitious fuel consumption figures, lubricant specs etc, but no wheel nut torque settings. Surely this figure is a basic setting an owner should have. Why is it not there? Anyway, set them to 70ft lb which I think is about right for an alloy.
