  • Channel island cars UK or Imports?? 5 Sep 2004 (Forum)
We're trying to trade in our Leon TDi S that started life as a Jersey hire car, then the dealer who imported it had it in their name so we're the 2nd UK owner. SEAT UK say its a UK car and it has the standard UK warranty and AA cover (we have a letter confirming the warranty cover but not the UK car bit), but our local Vauxhall dealer say its an import and value it as such (ie £1250 under the online Network Q thingy from Glass' guide) Who is right?
  • Idle problem with Rover 114 auto 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The problem is with the idle speed: it either ticks over too quickly, or not at all. I have changed the temp sensor to the ECU, but the fault\'s still there. Any one out there got any suggestions as to what it could be? All ideas are gratefully received. Many thanks Clown Doctor.
  • MG-ROVER - How can it be saved ?Vol 2 21 Aug 2004 (Forum)
f=2&t=24134 started by Carl_a Why? Why? Still, he started it and you lot have now gone on for over 200 replies, so here\'s vol 2. ND I have never considered owning a Rover. I always thought they were old mens cars. They kept the wrong name. They should have stuck with Triumph. The only Rover I ever fancied was the SD1 V8.
  • Nissan QX 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Reading HJ's latest auction report (The day?s best buy was probably the 93k mile 95N Nissan QX 2.0 chain-cam V6 in the photo. No auto, no leather, no air, but a big, solid, ultra-reliable minicab for £650.) made me wonder why this famously reliable car is soooooo unpopular.
  • Car for student 7 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Such vehicles do not provide the right image. She may eventually see sense when confronted with the running costs of older Clio's, 206's etc. but I would be grateful for any other suggestions. Are there any cars at this price that combine image and economy?
  • Golf2 doesnt like wet weather 24 Jun 2004 (Forum)
My Golf Mk2,Driver 1.6,Greg-is getting harder to start from cold in wet weather. It splutters, backfires, and sometimes the battery go`s flat from the turning over.Ive tried spraying wd4o on the leads, coil and distributor, which sometimes makes a difference, but I usually have to hold the starter on with throttle right down;when it eventually starts,it splutters for a few miles before running smoothly. It starts and runs fine in dry weather,so,any ideas what the problem is?
  • Imobilisers - Can the common car thief.. 29 May 2004 (Forum)
Since around 1998 it has been mandatory to fit immobilisers in all new cars sold in the uk. Can these be easily be driven away without the real car keys?? Or is this for the big time boy\'s and those that steal car keys from the ownners homes/bags/pockets? Thanks
  • Stripped spark plug threads.Cavalier Mk3 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Cavalier 3. Runs ok but I think one of the spark plug threads is crossed or stripped (not by me!), it\'s fairly tight but feels as if it\'d turn forever. I\'ve read an archive on helicoiling but I think that thread-locking cement might do the trick. So the question is: Which cement? The car accessory shops will sell you anything, I would have thought that it would be critical to use the right one given the temperature it\'ll be exposed to.
  • Advertising used cars 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Bought my first car last week, a 2002 Pug 206 1.1 LX. I thought it would be a good seller, but haven?t received a single call yet! It?s only advertised on the Auto Trader website at the moment, so I was after your thoughts on where else would be most suitable to advertise. Also, thoughts on price would be appreciated, perhaps I?m miles off!
  • \'98 Primera - Suspension problem 16 Feb 2004 (Forum)
My \'98 Primera has just had it\'s 6 month service ( 76000 miles ),at the Nissan main dealers. They say that the \'front Top Suspension Links\' are worn and need replacing. They have quoted £333 which seems v.expensive.I don\'t think much of the dealers anyway but are they trying to rip me off ??
  • 'Low Energy' Tyre Choice ? 19 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Which would HJ readers choose - The original Michelin Energy tyres had poor roadholding characteristics, but good life (rears have lasted 110k!). Then tried Goodyear GT3's on the front - better road manners, but they make a nasty resonant noise ... So choice: (175/65/14, T or above) * CONTINENTAL ECO CONTACT * TOYO CLEANPROXES E10 * YOKOHAMA S306 * BRIDGESTONE B330 / B391 any other ?
  • Dismantling suspension strut.Nis\'n Sunny 9 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I don\'t want to take the strut to a garage to do (with an air tool), because this will mean I can\'t do the job on a weekend and the car\'s out of action for a couple of days. I have a \"workmate\" type bench but nothing else like that to clamp it. Much appreciated! Mark
  • 160psi all round-Head gasket ok? VW Golf 5 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I\'ve lost half a litre of coolant in the last 2000 miles from somewhere. So I did a compression test, and all cylinders come up 160psi, within 2 psi. It\'s a mk2 Golf Gti 8v. Can anyone tell me whether the head gasket looks sound from this, and I should look for the leak elsewhere - or that it ain\'t necessarily so? Cheers Rob F
  • Fiesta 97 Handbrake 2 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Fiesta 97 Handbrake -little or no braking effort to the n/s wheel. Noticed having trouble holding on a hill. Also when h'brake been applied for a while, a quiet bang can be heard from the drum after releasing the h'brake & moving off. (Almost as if the shoes were seizing on and then breaking free.
  • 406 2.1TD mpg query... 1 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Hi, Am thinking of buying a friends 146,000k mile Pug 406 2.1 TD LX S reg, but went to check mpg in Top Gear magazine and it says it only does 28.8mpg, but the estaet figures for same engine are 39.9. I am confused! Do any owners have any real experience, and would you recommend a high mile 406 as a runabout (we do 10 miles a day, 2 trips to London a year, and holiday and weekend travelling around Devon.)
  • Four Wheel Drive Danger 18 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Judging by the above it can't be pedestrian safety yet the majority of schools with very vulnerable little pedestrians always seem to have a fair collection of 4 x 4's around at start and finish times.
  • Insuring 2 cars on same policy 14 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I own a 2nd car, and have been told by my insurance company I can drive my 2nd car, or any other car third party. I have phoned 3 times to check this and they are 100% convinced it\'s fine for my to drive my second car third party even though there is no other insurance covering it. Is this right? It seems almost to good to be true? (especially since my send car is group17)
  • Alloy wheels from breakers... 12 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Corolla 2000's wheel trims looking v.tired so thinking of giving it a Xmas present of alloys.... but I don't want 'aftermarket' jobs making my Corolla look like a boy-racer mobile and devalue the whole thing. The higher-spec Corollas had nice Toyota-made alloys, but when I asked my dealer how much they were as spares, they quoted £1000+ !!
  • Rewiring Hazard lights on Clio 172 2 Dec 2003 (Forum)
., imported Renault Clio Sport 172. Currently the hazard warning lights only work with the ignition on. To pass it\'s MOT it needs to be rewired so the hazard lights are connected to the battery instead. How long should this take a competent auto electrician? Also, where would the wiring diagram be located? Is it in the engine bay anywhere or the car manual?
  • Citroen AX poor cold starting 1 Nov 2003 (Forum)
My next door neighbours AX runs perfectly well once hot but has started to take an enernity to start when it\'s cold first thing in the morning. It didn\'t start at all this morning and he had the RAC out. They eventually got it going and told him to take it to a garage. He has started it without fail first time every hour all day today but knows that it wont start properly in the morning.
