  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 00 1.8 EM light/ECU? 17 Feb 2014 (Forum)
About 3 months ago it started with the EM light coming on permanently followed by all the loss of power/cutting out and using far too much fuel. I took it to my mechanic friend, had it read and replaced the mass air and the lambda(?) Sensors. Immediately after this it ran without power fade or cutting out, but he couldn?t clear the codes P0100 and P0110 if I remember them correctly.
  • BMW 525D Touring E61 - Poor Service & Rejection 19 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Graunching noise through power steering 8. Bluetooth inoperative 9. DVD Headrests missing 10. No Fuel 11. Poor fuel economy. The dealer promised to pick the car up, though failed twice to meet me, and it took an irate phone call from me threatening to throw keys back at them to actually pick up the car.
  • Volkswagen Eos - Experience of the VW Eos 22 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Once it's warm however and on a slightly longer run you really notice the difference, it's easy to get the computer to read over 40mpg.  So, overall, I like it, and the reduced fuel usage for a fortnight is welcome, but I definitely wouldn't buy one with my own money, it just doesn't have enough character. I can see why someone would want one as a second car for the wife or something.
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Cat red hot, cyl 1 plug carboned, black 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I wonder whether a leak in the inlet or exhaust manifold gaskets or similar could cause the computer to inject too much fuel on/for cyl 1. ANY IDEAS???? I haven?t had any (computer) diagnostics done. Might this show up much? (it?s a 93 car). ANY ADVICE on BUYING DIAGNOSTICS (to run on pc) to show codes/ performance/ O2 concentrations etc?????
  • FIAT Doblo - FIAT Doblo 1.9 in JTD & MJ forms – consumption 2 May 2010 (Forum)
With the increasing price of fuel I estimate that the current additional consumption, on my average of 14K/year, is costing me about £300 p.a. What else can I do to improve the mpg on the MJ; or am I expecting too much (too soon) ?
  • Nissan X-Trail (2001 - 2007) - 2004 2.2DCi 7 Turbo's, 3 Intercoolers, what do I d 27 Aug 2008 (Forum)
At just over 54K miles is it acceptable for Nissan to just keep changing the items until the warranty runs out without addressing the underying cause? I drive fairly economically (sometimes get over 40mpg), I fill up with Shell fuel most of the time, I treat the vehicle carefully and I change the oil and filter every 6K miles, not the advised 12K. I also have the air and fuel filter changed ahead of schedule too. I tow small trailers fairly regularly and a large one occasionally.
  • Is 6 Grand+5 y/o a car tipping point? 16 Feb 2007 (Forum)
My current logic is to perhaps spend say 10k and get a year old modern diesel car such as a cdti Vectra / Peugeot 407 HDI which are well equipped, possibly just as quick as the above cars in normal driving, have 2 years warranty left and keep it for longer - perhaps four years so that its actually me that gets the best life out of the car. I've worked out that I could save a 1000 pounds a year on fuel alone never mind lack of MOT's for two years and all new componentry that would be fitted. This fuel saving would pay for me to get that 4 years newer diesel car. I know that even a newish car needs maintenence and costs to run, and it seems like I made up my mind to get the newer car, but what I'd like to hear hear from you chaps is wether my logic works or I should just hang on with a car till its dead?

  • Leaning out mixture is bad isn't it? 6 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Continuing my latest obscession with fuel consumption.... On a recent long trip with a number of friends driving the same cars (BMW E32 735i) we did a consumption comparison. We ran at exactly the same speed (in convoy) at 70 mph on cruise-control for over 100 miles.
  • VW Golf - Help choosing a car - round 2 9 Jan 2025 (Forum)
t=178423 He's had a few courtesy cars in the past month - hated the Aygo, liked the drive on a Yaris but not the car itself, liked an MG ZS (but not its size or fuel consumption) and unimpressed with the gears on an Mercedes A180 (bit jerky at low speeds, not responsive enough when speed varies).  One thing he's learned is that Android Autoplay for him is a must now, and preferably LED or Xenon headlights.
  • VW POLO 2023 - Is it right that I pay? 20 May 2024 (Forum)
Fast forward 4 days and they tell me it was due to a manufacturing error because a bung wasn’t tightened enough on the radiator before it was released, my issue is - I’d not long filled my own car up with fuel however having had a curtesy car for 4 days, is it right that I should have to cover the cost of refuelling it if my own car had an issue through no fault of my own? I could understand if I was the one to cause the issue however it’s only 7 months old (thankfully under warranty) and while I’m extremely grateful that I could be provided with a replacement, it’s also left me out of pocket for the fact I’ve had to now refuel a second car.

  • Renault Kadjar - Renault dealer problem 19 Nov 2023 (Forum)
Next day they tell me it has 3 error codes and to diagnose work required will require a further four hours diagnosis and a further £600 before any remedial work. Codes showing as Fuel pressure sensor, downstream oxygen sensor and exhaust camshaft shifter fault. I declined to pay and took the car back but no further on and £150 down. Tried a couple of local garages but reluctant to look at it.
  • Time to choose another car 19 Oct 2023 (Forum)
The other car in the family is a Renault Captur, which I enjoy driving but it's not been reliable unfortunately, as it doesn't like periods of not being driven, e.g. 3 weeks between being used. My wish-list includes: Good fuel economy at motorway speeds Must be reliable car, cheap to run, and easy to obtain and fit parts Boot big enough for 2 large suitcases Must have space for a full-size or space-saver spare wheel, the foam stuff is useless if the tyre gets shredded on the motorway at midnight.
  • Peugeot 308 hdi 1.6 74000miles - Peugeot 308 1.6 hdi 74000 possible water pump 9 Jan 2023 (Forum)
I would say that I have only noticed a slight medium to high pitch hum when idioling. And a slight increase in fuel consumption. Used to get 70mpg now 67.3mpg using same driving style over same destinations. I guess my question is, the dealership technician says it's probably the pump. It might last and it might not.
  • Unknown - Ask HJ question ? 13 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I have just returned from a holiday and loading/unloading the car has been extremely frustrating as the low battery warning keeps going off as I didn’t leave the engine running (security risk and fuel cost). Earlier this month I spoke to the service department but they can’t disable any of the electronics that drain the battery. He said the showroom cars batteries are always going flat due to people opening the doors.
  • Any - Accuracy of mpg computers 26 Jun 2022 (Forum)
On return from this 'brim to brim' trip,  computer no. 2 reads 1377 miles, 47.0mpg, 48 avr. mph.  Actual (E10) fuel used (Tesco, E Leclerc and Intermarche supermarkets) was 137.90 litres which gave a true figure of 45.4 mpg, so the computer is roughly 3% out.  The long distance ensures that a large error of plus or minus 3 litres is needed to alter that by only plus or minus 1mpg.
  • Car servicing 6 Jan 2022 (Forum)
The only way of determining whether an item has been serviced rather than checked is to look at the bill where items such as air filters, plugs, fuel filters, coolants etc have been itemised and usually added to the initially  agreed price of the actual service. For me much confusion also exists on what's included in the final bill, what's recommended for further work, what's essential and added on after customer agreement.

Radio, horn and front lights don't work, rear lights work and so does the electronic boot unlock button and interior lights. Car does not start no crank nothing.
  • Dacia Logan MCV - Need new tyres for a boring car? 1 Oct 2021 (Forum)
I want to ideally pay under £50 per tyre fitted.  Something decent it the wet, dry (don't get much snow here), something that's fuel efficient and will not wear out fast. So far I've been looking at Bridgestone T500's. Which works out at £54 per tyre fitted, my only concern is I've read of reviews of these wearing out fast?
