Locked spout 17 Jan 2009 (Ask HJ)
I have a Vauxhall Cavalier 1.7TD. The car had a problem with the driver's window not going up and down. I repaired this, as it was the runner that had... -
Nissan Terrano II (1993 - 2005) - 1998 2.7 Black smoke 10 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It is definitley not the turbo. It has been on 2 diagnostic machines which didn't shed any light other than a faulty fuel temperature sensor that has been replaced but it still smokes. A new air flow meter has also been fitted but to no avail although when you unplug the airflow meter and rev the engine there is no excessive black smoke although it is undrivable with the airflow meter unplugged as there is no power. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.6 running roughly 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Drove home (about 60 miles) with no further problems, but the exhaust pipe is definitely showing it running rich. I've done a MPG check and it's doing about 40 MPG, so does not seem to be using fuel to any massive excess at all. Any ideas? Could the Lambda sensor have failed and it started to over-fuel and when I stopped and re-started, the ECU has adjusted itself for the faulty oxygen reading? -
Ford Escort (1990 - 1992) - 1994 1.6LXi - Immobiliser Problems 8 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Really couldn't understand it. I had it towed back to my home and called a mechanic out. He ran all the usual checks such as fuel pressure, crankshaft and spark plug test. He then informed me that the immobiliser was stopping the curent igniting the fuel injectors to fire it up. He advised me to take it to a main dealer but they want £250 to put a new one in. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.8 "Gutless" 31 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I had a diagnostic done and it said 'EGR valve flow malfunction' and I intend to get this sorted, but will it cure the car's sluggishness? Now fuel prices are dropping I can use Tesco's 'good stuff', the 99 octane, but a combination of the higher octane fuel and Redex doesn't seem to have any real effect. It gets an Italian tune up twice a day on the dual carriageway to and from work (I'm not thrashing it!) -
Citroen XM (1990 - 2000) - 96 2.1 td fuel injection problem 22 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I recently bought a 2.1td manual hatch, initially for spares as it needed a clutch, but it was in such good condition that I decided to repair it which... -
New engine - third time lucky? 14 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Well, driving home last night the car suddenly lost all power and I coasted to a halt at the side of a dual carriageway. Called the AA, truck arrived after about 45 mins and after a few checks the guy diagnosed a fuel delivery problem, probably a failed fuel pump. The car was towed to my home, and then taken this morning to the nearby VW dealers. I phoned this afternoon to check progress to be told it needed a new engine because a bolt in the cam belt tensioner had broken. -
Mrs Nsar is looking to change - suggestions please 9 Jul 2008 (Forum)
A bit scuffed and worn but nothing a bit of tlc wouldn't cure. Trade in price maybe £4500? She wants to reduce her carbon footprint and fuel costs. Most journeys are either 15 mile commute or 70-80 round trips about twice a week. We have two kids and a dog, but I drive a Legacy estate so a smaller car is desirable on costs/enviro grounds. -
Cars still being flogged to death, no saving then? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Will some people choose to just not take the car out instead or will they be seen at the roadside gasping in indignation and blaming something else, such as the car, for having run out of fuel? ;) Even made myself yawn there, was it worth bothering? -
Diesel vs Petrol school runs in Midi MPV? 12 May 2008 (Forum)
The concern I have is that 95%+ of her journeys are going to be short ones, less than 5 miles from a cold start, plenty of it stop / start traffic. What would the real world fuel economy of a Diesel engine vs Petrol from a cold start over a short distance be (I presume the Petrol would warm up quicker)? I've also heard a number of horror stories of particulate filters clogging and severe fuel dilution of oil after only 3k when a car has been subjected to such short journey abuse. -
Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 04 2.0vti - stalling problem, not sure what to do 11 May 2008 (Forum)
Switch the aircon off and immediately it goes to 400-450. I have changed the air filter about a year ago and only ever use the best fuel. The fuel filter was also changed about two years ago. Mileage is 34K, so not much. I am stuck... -
Rover 25 (1999 - 2005) - 02 1.4 16v engine misfire 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Running diagnostics either shows nothing amiss or refers to faults that are not pertinent to this model. Spark plugs and fuel filter have been replaced, and the fuel lines flushed, to no avail. The only significant work undertaken on the engine prior to this problem occurring, was to replace a blown head gasket at 55k. -
SEAT Cordoba (1994 - 2003) - Vario 98 1.9TDi central locking leak 3 Apr 2008 (Forum)
When one locks the doors, they all still lock, but the vacuum pump continues to run for about half a minute, after which point the doors will not unlock automatically. It was more of an inconvenience when I couldn't easily open the fuel filler cap despite following the instructions in the manual! I have found the source of the leak to be the locking mechanism for the fuel filler cap; fiddling with the mechanism gets the locking working normally. -
Vauxhall Nova (1983 - 1993) - 1984 1.2 - pierburg 1b fault - any ideas? 16 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Then, when you're up to say 60-70, and take your foot off the throttle and put it back on, there's a big flat spotty sort of jerk rather than smooth take-up. Sometimes going up a hill it's difficult to keep the car going at even 60mph. Fuel economy is unaffected, it's still 45-ish to the gallon regardless. The problem comes and goes. Usually it lasts for a couple of hundred miles before going again. I wonder if it's a bit of dirt floating about inside the carb or maybe that pump diaphragm, though that usually affects the fuel consumption as well. -
Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 95 1.4 petrol - Not Starting... 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Having towed the car back home i was able to look at it today, first i removed the cambelt covers and found that the cambelt had shed quite a few teeth off , so i fit a new belt thinking this would sort the problem, having put the belt on and lined all the timing marks tried starting the car, no joy infact the car spins over really fast like it has little compression, i removed the spark plugs no petrol on them at all, so then i removed the fuel supply pipe and get my lad to turn the engine over whilst i hold the pipe in a jar, just to make sure the fuel pumps working ok, which it is. So now lm at a loss as to why no petrol is getting into the engine, is there an electrical cut off valve on the carb? -
Audi 80 Mk II (1991-1995) - 1993 2.0E - Unusual problem, loosing power. 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
My first thing to think of was the cat as it has started rattling really bad lately and could have got blocked up intermittintly or some thing electrical (plugs leads?) or the fuel (qtr tank) that was in tank was dodgy. I put 30 quid of fresh fuel in and it seems ok now after a 100 mile round trip today, however it still has a slight bit of hesitation espically under load, but iss still more than driveable. -
SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - HGV Slipstreaming 13 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Well today east of Leeds on those deserted sections of the M62, M18, M180 and the A15 to a lesser extent I had a go. 220 miles in an Altea 2.0 Tdi DSG (auto), fuel computer calculated 60.8 mpg average. It's a journey I've done may times and rarely bettered 50mpg, I did not pootle behind the 55mph bunch but selected European registered trucks who seemed to travel at 60-65. -
Tyre experiment over.. 27 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The tread depths a lot deeper on these tyres too. I suppose if your getting upwards of 25,000 on tyres of the `fuel saver` type it doesnt matter. But again, the wear is around only 1/3 of the eco tyres so.............. But if your other half drives as though its a combat mission.. :) Regards -
Ducato 2.5TDi, fuel stop solenoid puzzle 17 Jul 2007 (Forum)
This is not entirely unconnected with my recent query as to the cutting out problem; however best to draw a veil over the *connection*, suffice to say...
