2.5k Used Car Opinions.. 23 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Looking for: -Small car -Low insurance (we are 24&23 so want to keep the cost down) -Economic -Cheap to run etc. I am thinking of a 2002-2004 model with 40-60 on the clock. At the moment I am thinking it will be the choice out of the following.. Ka, Fiesta, Panda, Punto, 206 as they would match the above. -
Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 1997 1.4CL - Clattery Transmission 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Any views on the cause? The clutch isn't slipping. The clattering only became audible after a 100 mile motorway run a month or so ago.... {No need to repeat what you've already selected from the drop down menus as this automatically gets included within the subject header} -
Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 1999 1.8 responses puzzle 10 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi, My vectra runs very well especially on the motor ways, but i find if i am in traffic or idling for a while the responses when moving off is slow or hesitant, it is not the clutch, i had the timing belt changed recently but it was doing it before the belt change, any ideas what it may be, some times it responds better than others, i have noticed that it idles compared to my previous cavalier lower, around 500 instead of 900-1000 on my cavalier, is this any thing to do with the response from standing to accelerating Regards Ron -
Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - 05 d5 Vibration 1 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi,hope you can help, i've had my car for about 7 months and its always run very smooth, i recently had a new top engine/ torque bush fitted because the old one was splitting and since then i get a bad vibration at 60-70 mph. I've balanced all the wheels, there is no vibes through the steering wheel but there is through the floor and bulkhead, it feels like a drive shaft out of balance, but seems too much of a coincidence that a shaft would go when i had a bush fitted.... help its driving me mad, thanks. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1998 1.25 Fast Idle and not reving over 4000 rpm 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi Just purchased a small runabout for my Wife and the car is a Ford Fiesta 1.25 l zetec automatic R reg, the car runs fine except, when at a standstill you put it into Drive it sometimes cuts out and the idle appears to be fast also at a standstill if you rev the engine in Park or Neutral the revs appear to be limited and do not go past 4000rpm, any ideas, electrical or a gearbox problem, due to this if you press the accelerator to the flooor in drive there is no kick down, although its the newer gearbox version of the CVT. -
Jaguar X-Type (2001 - 2009) - Jaguar x-type advice 26 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Car has been a company car and full jag service history. The car was filled with petrol a while ago and has had a £2k bill from jag and now seems to be running fine. Its also on its 2nd clutch - is this usual? Anyway what im after is some advice - is this a good deal and are these cars anygood? I dont do a great mileage but would like something decent to upgrade my Astra from. -
Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 02 2.0 HDI Starter motor intermittent 20 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The central locking/immobiliser is working correctly (no low batt warning/error messages). On a recent problem, the starter motor was running (not engaged to engine), without the key in place. The mechanic has diagnosed a fault in the ignition switch, although this is not proved. This is expensive to replace. Any ideas? -
Mazda Bongo (1994 - 1999) - 1997 2.5 General topic - rear axle whine. 19 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The diff oil level was down by around a pint, and the remaining oil was very black. The whine is annoying but not the end of the world! I know that diffs can run for many years like this, but the noise is spoiling an otherwise civilised drive... So, does anyone know of any product that can GENUINELY reduce axle noise (no, I'm not talking about saw dust!) so that the inevitable can be delayed for a couple of years? -
Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - 00 1.8 Grinding noise 9 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Nissan Primera 1.8 P11-144, X-plate, 200+K miles. When the weather is dry, after the car has been for a decent run (say more than 20 miles), a grinding noise can be heard on acceleration. Take the foot off the gas, or dip the clutch, and it goes away. If the weather is wet, no noise at all. If the car is cold, no noise. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 1.9tdi loosing water 3 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The water comes out of the header tank so I was thinking it may be a faulty cap, and it always seems to have a lot of pressure when I remove the cap, even after a few seconds of running. is it best to replace the cap or has anybody got any ideas on the subject . Regards maxitron -
Small cars - worth the bother? 26 Oct 2008 (Forum)
With the current economic climate encorageing people to be more frugal, many are taking the opportunity to downsize into superminis in the hope of saving a few quid at the pumps and future-proofing themselves against rising VED. My question is, are the lower running costs worth the sacrifice? With the dubious honour of having driven a variety of modern superminis, I can report that the answer, in my opinion, is no! In comparison to a mid-spec Focus or Astra, they were crude, noisy, uncomfortable, slow, poorly equipped, depressing to drive and unsafe. -
Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 2003 1.8 Power steering problem 22 Oct 2008 (Forum)
When the vehicle is started from cold or is say just ticking over the power steering is not working and it is like driving a car without power steering, when the engine has some revs on and has warmed up the power assistance improves but it is not as it should be. Before I run up some large repair bills I would appreciate some idea of what maybe wrong and what sort of cost is likely to be involved. -

Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 2.0 hdi starting to smoke 9 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Hi Have a problem starting to occur on the 2.0hdi RHYE the car starts fine and seems to run ok in low gears (can be a little sluggish in high gears)up to approx 2000-2500rpm above this when accelerating I get black smoke from the exhaust, not huge amounts but enough to be noticed by following cars this also happens sometimes on the overrun. -
Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - 1997 1.6 - Car juddering while accelerating. 7 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Basically, in all gears from 1000 to 2500/3000 revs it judders while accelerating, after which it runs smoothly despite an obvious lack of power - I can get to 80mph in 4th gear but 5th gear does practically nothing, whereas before 4th gear would be at quite high revs and 5th would accelerate the car still. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2004 2.0TDCi engine noises 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
To my ear the engine is chattering, there is a puff of blue smoke on startup but fuel and oil consumption are very good. It also runs smoothly at 70mph. Can anyone offer advice on what it might be, I assume it could range from a big end up to a loose chain. Many thanks. Peter -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 05 1.6 Boot opening!!!! 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
When ever I apply the brake pedal the boot unlocks and I get the warning on the dash saying luggage compartment open. It does the even when the car isn't running but with the ignition on. I have looked for fuses that might have blown but can not find one and all the connections to the boot seem fine. The other thing is I can only open the boot by using the boot button on the key, even when I unlock the car I can not open the boot by the boot catch. -
FIAT Panda 4x4 (2005 - ) - Is this insanity? 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I thought I could resist but, now that FiatSupaSaver have knocked £2500 off the price, I'm falling in love with the Panda Cross in Goa Orange with an interior in a mixture of black and bright orange. It has a completely mad and pointless plastic fitting running the length of the roof and rear light units like rocket motors. What's happening to me? Am I insane or is it just my hormones? Advice needed urgently, best wishes, Chris. -
Nissan Primera (1990 - 1996) - 95 1.6 - Help with cooling system problem 1 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I intend to add a coolant-leak additive as I think I have a small leak somewhere in the system. Can anyone give me some tips as to how to get the most out of it. Someone suggested running the car with the cap off for a bit while it circulates. Just some general tips would be a real help - feel free to state the obvious - I may not have thought of something. Thanks in advance Paul {Added info from drop down menus that weren't previously an option when this post was first written} -
Renault Clio III (2005 - 2009) - 2005 auto - Service intervals and warranty 31 Aug 2008 (Forum)
We just bought a car from the main dealer, it is nearly 3 years old. We are planning to extend the warranty in a few months when the manufactures' one runs out. We were told that they had done all the services etc. When we got the documentation we noticed that the service interval is every 12m/18k but the first service wasn't carried out for another 6 months 18m/15k.
