£1,000 - need cheap load lugger 20 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Key requirements are: - cheap purchase price - fairly reliable - cheap to repair / solid mechanicals. The good news is that we won't be going very far with the car so fuel economy isn't really relevant, and also I'm not too bothered about mileage - have had plenty of 100k+ cars in the past with no worries, although I would like to see evidence of a proper service history. -
Clio 1.2 Erratic running 19 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I wondered about coolant temp sensor, but it seems to idle at about 1200 cold, dropping back to 800 or so when warm as expected, and doesn't seem to be using excessive fuel. Has the feel of an earth fault on the ECU to me, or maybe the ECU is developing a dry joint? Rather vauge set of symptoms I'm afraid, just wondering if anybody's got any thoughts to common weak points. -- RichardW Is it illogical? -
Rover 214...something - stopped working 31 Mar 2005 (Forum)
He was driving it the other day and it just stopped on the motorway and wouldn't start again. He's been told it could be the fuel filter or the ECU - both pretty much writing off the car as it's done very hogh mileages and both components would cost more than the car. I was wondering if the BR had any other suggestions as to what the problem could be. -
How many can you fit in a Polo? 7 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Apparently 7 ....... Saw a classic at the petrol station last night. Car pulls up, middle aged woman gets out to re-fuel. Out of the passenger door comes a girl who looks no more than 15 years of age but is wearing less clothing than nightclub dancer. Thought it was odd how she managed to get out the car with another girl still sitting in the front seat, but just thought they had somehow flipped the seat down and she climbed over. -

SUV-Xtrail/Tucson/Rav4 18 Nov 2004 (Forum)
(Sorry for shameless repeat posting , but this got hidden in a long thread, and looking for any responses) I have finally narrowed the choice of SUVs that can be bought in the price range of approx £12000-14000. The Nissan Xtrail-Looks good, claimed fuel consumption 39mpg! on the diesel.Plus Nissans famed reliability record. Rav4-Claimed to drive like a hatchback, good resale values and reliability, dont know how good the diesel is though. Hyundai Tucson/Terracan-less dearer, though not so good resale values and reliability. -
Judder - Golf tdi 110 (2000) 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The problem is not always there. Volkswagon say its the flywheel, but not that sure becuase they also said it was a solenoid and fuel control valve and it wasn't. Also when idling bad, if I push the butterfly valve on the EGR (in line with the intercooler) it idles fine, when I take the pressure of the problem comes back. Can anyone help - the flywheel has been quoted at £970 so don't want to change unless sure its the problem. -
New car for mother. 3 Sep 2004 (Forum)
She wants something relatively small (ie focus sized, or perhaps smaller) with reasonable performance- i have advised her she will find most things slow after the 225 bhp volvo- and air-conditioning, if possible. We hope to spend around 5k on this car. The car will only cover at most 6k a year so fuel economy is irrelevant. Reliability is an important criterion for the new vehicle as it will be required every weekday without fail, so no Renaults. I have a little knowledge of the cars available in this price bracket, but dont know much about automatics- which cars should i look for? -
Audi starting problem 2 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Late tonight I thought I might try to start it - guess what: the problem has recurred - fires up but cuts out immediately. RAC man told me at the time that a change in unleaded fuel type SHOULD NOT cause problems but he then went on to tell me a story about a friend who had this problem due to a change from super unleaded to premium unleaded. -
Unknown modifications and insurance 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I hadn't a clue that it had until now (ironically I was getting it chipped because the car was too heavy on fuel!). It seems to have a non standard label on the chip but I know the ecu was replaced when I first had the car so there is an outside chance there is an innocent explanation for a different label to be on there. -
Non-PD 150 bhp Leon? 21 Nov 2003 (Forum)
If so, was this achieved simply by remapping the ECU (chipping), or were other methods used to achieve this, e.g. larger fuel injectors? Or were the 130 and 150 bhp engines only ever available with the Pumpe-Duse technology? The reason I ask is that every so often I still think about chipping my car from 110 to 130. Having read up all the various threads on this site and elsewhere, I am concerned about excessive wear & tear, eg on the clutch. -
Honda CRV 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm considering it as a replacement for a 13 year old Volvo 740 estate. Although the Volvo is very thirsty I would expect to use the Honda a lot more and so the fuel consumption is quite an important consideration. I know that some regular contributors to the Backroom have CRV's.Any advice on real-world mpg figures would be much appreciated. Is the official combined figure of 31 mpg actually obtainable. -
306 diesel idle problem after start-up 17 Oct 2003 (Forum)
It would then start immediately afterwards. I thought this could be air in the system, so re-fitted the fuel filter and bled the system, and this problem hasn?t occurred since (just thought I?d include this in case it?s related). -

throttle position sensor voltage. 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Hello, My first ?modern? fuel injected ecu controlled car and here I am. I have a 96 Seat Cordoba which is running badly (erratic idling, loss of power, misfire, intermittent stoppage). Fault code reader gave ?throttle position sensor faulty?. -
Ford Escort Many Problems 27 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Mileage is appalling and gets worse with age, currently get approx. 25-28mpg on motorways. In town uses fuel like anything. Just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems!!! -
Omega queries 5 Apr 2003 (Forum)
According to the trip computer and my own calculations I'm averaging 22mpg. Nearly all the driving is urban but even then I was hoping for a bit better fuel economy: a friend has a manual version, 5 years older than mine and averages almost 30mpg. Is my car's mpg about right or heavy? Also because of the consumption I'm thinking of converting to LPG. I've done the maths and anticipate a payback period of about 14months which is fine as I love the car and intend to keep it for much longer than that. -
Rebecca's next question 16 Jan 2003 (Forum)
New tax code for 2003/4 has landed on the doormat. Although I chose my BMW (company car) with the new tax rules in mind, I hadn't noticed the fuel rules were changing too and the numbers are all a bit scary now. The car is a BMW 318i Touring Auto with a few extras (leather seats, integral child seats, CD x 6, extra air bags) the CO2 figure is 195. -
company car options 8 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I have just got a new job and with it comes a company car or an allowance of £385 per month. Both options have an additional and identical fuel allowance that depends on the engine size of the car. The cash option involves complete freedom to buy any car I want and the cost of maintenance falls to me. If I choose the company car option, all the servicing etc is taken care of but I am taxed as a benefit in kind.
