How many can you fit in a Polo? - holly1
Apparently 7 .......

Saw a classic at the petrol station last night. Car pulls up, middle aged woman gets out to re-fuel. Out of the passenger door comes a girl who looks no more than 15 years of age but is wearing less clothing than nightclub dancer. Thought it was odd how she managed to get out the car with another girl still sitting in the front seat, but just thought they had somehow flipped the seat down and she climbed over.

Five mins later she returns with a packet of ciggies only to return to her seat in the car which turned out to be the front passenger footwell!! I check the back seat and there are already 4 other teenage girls sitting there.

I could understand the total stupidity of this act if there had been a teenage girl driving the car, but the woman was well into her 40s and I can only presume was the mother of one of them.

What an example to set to your offspring .... not to mention the fact there is little chance of anyone surviving an accident in that car.

I saw a woman come out of our local shop with 2 young girls (6/8 years old), she got into the driver's seat, they both stood up in the front passenger's footwell peering out of the windscreen! Stupid isn't it?

In my younger, more irresponsible days, I managed to get seven of my fellow sixth formers into a Suzuki SC100. It had a significant effect on the car's performance...

Looking back 30 or 40 years, I suspect that this sort of thing was not uncommon. I certainly remember some pretty well filled vehicles once or twice in my childhood - and my parents tended to be very cautious!

I had 6 in an (old) mini once - the sixth was on the front passenger's lap with his face squashed up against the windscreen!

Boycott shoddy build and reliability.

I agree. I'm in my thirties and I can remember such things being commonplace when I was a child. I recall several trips with two familes of four in a Cortina estate. If I remember correctly, this was achieved by having two adults and two children on the back seat and the remaining children in the luggage compartment. It's also possible that the front passenger seat was shared. This would have been in the late seventies, a couple of years before compulsory seat belts. I can also remember family holidays in which we children travelled in the back of a Maxi with the back seats folded down.

Prior to this, I travelled to and from school in a heavily overloaded Transit mini-bus operated by a local taxi firm. There was standing room only in a vehicle that was clearly only suitable for seated passengers.

All this seems recklessly irresponsible now, but times, attitudes, and awareness of the dangers have changed.

When I was about ten, we frequently managed 9 of us in a Renault 4.

It was easier to get the same number in a Hillman Avenger, but some folks were not so keen on being in the boot, so it wasn't as popular an option.

For children in need we fitted 13 people into a yaris - but it was in no danger of being driven anywhere!

I can remember watchin 'Police camera action' some years ago (anybody ever watched it?) They were showing a camera footage from Germany or Holland (cant remember which) of a an old MB 200 saloon towing a trailer of a dozen kids bikes on it. The police patrolmen pulled them over for some reason, they then asked everybody in the vehicle to step out of it. Shall enough there about 12 kids aged between 5-10 years gettin out of the back seat alone!!!!

Maybe my eyes ain't 100% either, but that looks to me a little more like water than sand. Just as a general observation, I am told that sand is usually somewhat better for driving on ...

My brother in law is quite happy for his eleven year old to sit unrestrained, and the six year old to sit on the arm rest, again no belt.

Only so many times that you can tell them.

I can remember sharing the boot of my parent's Range Rover with my brother on a family trip to Bridgwater. Think there were 7 in the car then, but it wasn't so squashed, really. I think that was the only time I've been in a car without a seatbelt on.

When I was a kid, no cars had rear searbelts, and plenty didn't have front belts. Even my Dad's 1970 Cortina was unusual, cos he didn't just fit seatbelts, he put in those ones with a windy thing -- most folks who had seatbelts had the horrible fixed things.

I never saw rear belts until the 80s, and babies were usually just plonked on the back seat.

I know it's much safer to use a belt, but none of my friends was ever injured cos of not having one. However, two of the boys had their spines mangled playing rugby, and another were crippled in motorbike accidents.

Do people still put babies in carry-cots on the back seat? Not being a parent I'm not out-of-touch with such things. I seem to remember that Princess Diana was criticised (but not too heavily) for riding in a car with the baby Prince William in her arms.

The first car I can remember with inertia reel belts was a 1971 Maxi. I remember you were advised to test them every so often by braking sharply on a quiet road. Is this still standard advice?

Blue Peter viewers of 30 years ago will remember something like 105 people crammed into a VW Beetle. Driven 15 yards or so by Peter Purvis. They're still trying to shoehorn the last few out of the footwells.

I managed to crash a fiesta into my mate's nova four years ago on black ice, and the police who came to see what was going on were quite bemused to see 13 people inspecting the damage on the two cars!
How many can you fit in a Polo? - helicopter
We had five when SWMBO drove our old Polo Classic home with Helicopter Jr in the front and three of his 6 ft plus rugby playing mates in the back complete with school and kit bags after a game - It was well down on the springs but not illegal however it never did quite get rid of that smell of sweaty kit and embrocation ....

I'm surprised we haven't had PoloGirl in on this thread yet - where are you? We're missing you.

Last heard of mounting a kerb because there was nowhere else to park and doing something unfortunate to your suspension (sorry, the car's). How many were in the Polo at the time I wonder....
