• '98 VW Polo 1.4CL - Droning noise from engine? 20 Jun 2012 (Forum)
  Got a new noise coming from my car as of today. At around 20 it sounds like someone blowing air down a cardboard tube. As I accelerate it gets louder, around 40+ it sounds like an old prop driven airplane. As best I can tell it's coming from the front, perhaps slightly to the left.

    Looking for a decent vehicle to do over 35,000+ miles a year that is both reliable and fuel efficient. I would be the only passenger mainly motorway driving, old car was a petrol 1.2 which was costing me tons on fuel so maybe a diesel. Advice on what maximum mileage I should be looking and age would be great total newbie!!       Thanks in advance

  What on earth has happened to second hand car prices? Last time I was considering an upgrade I could pick up a low mileage 3y old Grand Picasso for about 6k. A year later it's more like 7.5k. Is this the same across the board? My guess is that this must reflect price gouging by retailers in the face of lower volumes.

  Also the rain seems to stay on the repaired area but dipersies from the original unrepaired areas. The car is only 12 weeks old, any suggestions to whats caused this and how I can correct it.

  I bought this escort 1.6 si " n " reg  as a non runner due to water pump & thermostat needed changing, i have replaced the water pump, cam belt, drive belt, spark plugs, made sure the engine was in line for tdc properly but it will not start, it is a low miliege car with 68,000 very genuine miles and owned by an old dear from new. any help on this would be much appreciated ?

  I have never got into these before but our 3 year old Colt is about to pass out of warranty.  We have been offered 1,2 or 3 years of extended breakdopwn cover for £275, £409 or £589.  The car is well looked after.  Regadless whether the same deal is cheaper elsewhere, is this type of cover worthwhile or is it  the same sort of poor deal you get with white goods and the like?

  Been checking on my local Ford dealers site and there are quite a few 57 plate 1.6 Focuses for sale for £ 6995. What are running costs like for this and are they reliable? My old man hated Fords and always told me to avoid them and some of this prejudice has carried on for me as I was always told they were a lottery to buy. However, from what I gather the Focus is a very good looking and reliable car with good resale and reasoable servicing costs.

  What's the law regarding what has to be on a legal licence plate? I need new ones and don't want one of those poncey italic fonts, just plain old legal lettering - I'm sure I've heard that to pass the MOT, the postcode of the car's original dealer must be in smaller lettering underneath. Is this right or can I just have my reg number and nothing else?

  I have got a 1.8petrol mark 2 focus old shape of mark two (january 2008) can anyone say when the mod came in on stopping water out of washer jet pipes rusting the spark plugs in , or what the mod looks like I see traces of water under the bonnet and wondered if my car is pre or post the mod made by ford thanks ?

  I have just had the call - "Dad I can't get reverse gear". Apparently No2 daughter can select all forward gears and the car moves forward but reverse can...

  The engine warning light flashed on this morning on my less than a week old Fiesta. It only came on for a couple or three seconds and the car seems to drive OK. Its has done less than 500 miles so I am a bit concerned. Should I be worried or just keep going and see if it happens again thanks

  What is the BRs advice on car batteries. I have an 06 Focus with the original Ford battery. So out of warranty and coming up to 4 years old. My experience with Fords is that their batteries in the past don't last long, and I've usually had to replace everyone.

  I need to replace the water pump as the old one is leaking, my car has the type with 4 bolts on the pulley but the Haynes manual is based on the older 3 bolt variety, so I'd like to know if this makes any difference ot the job? Also any general tips or warnings would be nice, thanks.

  on the old m62 today doing 70 mph in a fiat siecento 3rd lane no problem ,electric steering wooly as they are, when all of a sudden i lost all power,thinking cambelt gone out of fuel etc then realised my foot had come off the accelerator pedal as its only the size of half a crown anyone else ever had that dread feeling in a car only to find it was a false alarm?

  My mum, bless her, put a gallon of unleaded in her diesel Kia Cee'd earlier this week. She realised the mistake, didn't start the car and it was pushed to the adjacent workshop - a Honda franchise - and the tank flush job was done satisfactorily. My question is what would be a reasonable charge? I'll post the actual figure later today, but I'm a bit concerned the garage may have taken advantage of a 70-year-old woman in distress.

  Can a diesel engine have pre-ignition? On these cold mornings my engine makes a sound like an old petrol engine "pinking" when I accelerate. It lasts until the engine gets warm, maybe 3-4 miles. The car has done 50,000 trouble free miles, I hope there is no fuel pump problem as mentioned on this site.
