  • Corsa Problems 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
There is a low 'hissing' noise that seems to be coming from the drivers footwell. Normally and sharp jump on the brakes stops this, but I'm unable to find out where and why it is doing this. 2. There seems to be a strange smell coming into the car. It reminds me of petrol fumes. It doesn't happen all the time, but is very noticeable when it does.
  • Renault service 2 Jan 2006 (Forum)
160(mugged by Renault)the other problem ABS light sometimes come on .The problem was a section of the ABS wiring had been repaired at some time with electricians connector block on one side and through crimps on the other.Themechanic had never seen such a botch job in his life, when I told him it had only been in Renault garages in the UK during its life as a lease car, he found it hard to believe no matter who was the culprit can you understand the mentality of someone who would do that to the brakes as a repair. Also the so called reputal garage where it was bought with its 60 point safety check.Needless to say I shall be having words when I return to the UK.
  • 406 V6 coil (again) 24 Nov 2005 (Forum)
s only a ten minute job once the right faulty coil has been diagnosed, would I be able to do it myself in future if I carried a couple of spares? How involved is it? I can change brake pads, oil and put shelves up and I carry a basic tool kit. Can you tell a failed coil by looking at it? Am I being realistic? Cheers, Dave
  • '93 Escort 1.4 petrol Grinding Gears 22 Nov 2005 (Forum)
t slip if I put my foot down to accelerate. It also doesn?t slip, if I put it in 1st, with the hand brake on, and try to move. The engine labours to the point of stalling, before I put the clutch back in again. There does seem to be a lot of play in the top end, with the gear stick. Is it likely to be worn components in the remote selector unit, of is it more likely to be synchromesh problems in the box itself?
  • Skoda Questions 27 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Skoda don't offer extended warranties so can any one advise as to where I should look bearing in mind I do approx 30k a year 2. Any Octavia owners exeprencied a wobbling through the steering wheel when braking from approx 50mph to roundabouts on dual carriageways? I am also getting a whistling from the nearside front screen when on the m/way. It sounds like the passenger window is slightly down and letting in the air- It is not and it is driving me bonkers!
  • Peugeot 406 queries 13 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Just bought a very nice 99 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI at auction tonight, and notice it needs one or two minor things doing to it. 1.n/s/f and n/s/r/ indicators don't work, although the front wing one does.(Bulbs??) 2.n/s/r/brake light doesn't work.(Again bulb??) 3.Spanner light is on.How do you re-set it if you service a car yourself? 4.I'm assumimg it has climate control, but it's at 14deg,and it doesn't seem to move using the left hand button. Can it be turned down?
  • P Reg Ford Escort 1.6i GLX temp gauge 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Guy said it does work but takes time, not sure about this. Checked all other usuals (lights, emissions, brakes, gears etc), but the gauge is bugging me a bit. Gut feeling is to go with it, as overall and for the price it seems pretty good. Going to do an HPI check on it, but anyone any thoughts on this? Details : P reg, 78000 miles.
  • VW Bora steering wheel shakes violently. 24 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I can rev the engine, which sounds fine, or pump the clutch. It doesn't matter if I'm in or out of gear or on the hand or foot brakes. Someone suggested the power steering fluid but there's plenty of it there. The only other opinion I've heard was there's something wrong with the timing belt but I'd always heard that by the time you think anything is wrong with it your engine is already an expensive door stop.
  • Driving down risk in the community. 23 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Today while driving my company Transit I was severely cut up by a red Ford Fusion belonging to East Sussex fire and Rescue. He caused me to brake hard. I gave him the benefit of the doubt as we all make mistakes. However, as I followed him up to a set of lights in the straight ahead lane which were red he then executed a lane switch into the right filter which was green and proceeded to turn right.
  • Online Ford Spares 5 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Wife recently acquired a Fiesta TDCI and I was wondering if there are any good online retailers (similar to Euro or GSF)selling basic service items such as filters, brake pads etc. I tried a Google, but it kept coming up with US based sites even though I specified a UK search. Also any owners of this model know what the tyre pressures should be and if there is any other oil specification than 5w-30?
  • Liability for rear end accident? 30 May 2005 (Forum)
So we were driving home from a wedding on Sat night, doing about 60mph on a country road when we rounded a gentle corner to find a rabbit sitting in the middle of the road. My first reaction would have been to stand on the brakes. However my wife was driving and she chose instead to drive over the rabbit (wheels straddling it). The rabbit was ok. My question is, if I'd been driving and had stopped dead, and someone rear-ended me, who's fault is it?
  • Was I dreaming? 3 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Driving through the centre of Croydon last night on a three lane wide road ,I was seriously cut up by a car in the right hand turning lane changing lane and forcing me to swerve into the inside lane and brake to avoid an accident. I sounded my horn as he pulled away from me and then he had to stop at the next set of lights. I pulled alongside him on the inside. I looked across and saw the car had two young couples in it and then his passenger window came down and the driver said something, I was spoiling for an argument and getting into 'baseball bat' mode when I wound down my window and said 'What did you say' , assuming it was an insult.
  • Water leaks on Golf IV 31 Jan 2005 (Forum)
The other day we found a puddle of water in the front footwell, and the rear footwell was also soaking (both driver side). On testing with a hose it seems that water is tracking in from somewhere above the brake pedal mounting. Under the bonnet, the enclosed area below the windscreen seems to retain standing water longer than I would like or expect: there's usually a rubber drain hose for these areas, but the engine compartment is so packed that I can't see or feel a drain hose.
  • Golf GTi 16v Mk3- gearbox problems 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
left it in drive for a day and it seemed back to normal but there is obviously something not right- could it be mounting or linkage or is it likely to be internally screwed? ABS- light is on- that is all i know for now- seems to brake ok but light is continually on. I know its vague but if you know these have common problems then maybe it will make me keep the car? Cheers- Simeon
  • Am I neglecting my car? 26 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I see garages offering "full" services for anything around £60-£100 but this seems to me little more than the oil and filter change plus a brake/tyre check and anti-freeze drain/refill. Am I effecting the long term future of my car with this attitude? I check my tyres obviously and would keep the oil/coolant topped up (not that the levels ever seem to change!)
  • 1996 vw golf vr6 lumpy idling 25 Nov 2004 (Forum)
ive recently renewed the brake servo vacume pipe, HT leads, air intake pipe, airfilter & airfilter housing on the vehicle. Ive noticed the vehicle doesnt idle as smoothly as it used too. Ive have thorougly checked over the work many times to make sure everything is tight and secure.
  • Renault Megane 2 Queries..... 9 Nov 2004 (Forum)
the water noise behind the dashboard when cold. It goes away after warming up. The noisy squeely brakes. I think Ive heard nearly every new megane do it! Any opinions would be great, plus any advice on this car, owning it and what to expect would be great. thanks in advance.
  • Fiesta Mk4 (98) - Rear Reverse Light 25 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Of course I naturally assumed that the bulb had blown, so I lifted the boot and took out the light cluster only to be faced with what looked like a perfectly good bulb. To double check this I tested it by swapping it with the brake light and it did indeed work. Is this a common problem? Is there some well-known dodgy electrics concerning the reverse light on this model? Tomorrow I will swap the rear plate with the other rear light and test to see of the reverse light will work (assumming the connecters are the same).
  • Dark Nights 29 Sep 2004 (Forum)
By the time I reached my exit at Oxford I had counted over 90 , in 4 groups - no lights / parking lights only/ foglights (despite perfect visibility ) / broken lights ( including a van with no rear lights at all ,inc brake lights ). I have driven in other countries and it\'s only in the UK that I have experienced people believing they can show whatever lights they feel like - why is this?
  • VAG DSG Auto gearbox and hill starts 8 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I wonder if people can share their experiences of using VAG's DSG gearbox, with twin clutch etc... As I understand it, you have two peddles, brake and throttle, and then control gears with levers around the wheel. Now you can drive in automatic, or use up and down gear shifting. My question is, have people enjoyed driving this way, without the clutch peddle, and also, how do you do a hill start.
