  • Failed VW TDI PD engine 23 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Mine is an import so in theory the warranty was only a year. If I'm not unique a case it maybe something to consider before buy a second hand car with VW 115hp PD engine. Cheers
  • Caravan towing speed record 5 Nov 2002 (Forum)
The petrol record was set using the same caravan as the diesel attempt but this time being towed by a Mercedes Benz ML500, the powerful V8 4x4 setting the record at a breakneck 174 km/h. This record is also under investigation as a world normally-aspirated production car towing record. Details of this will be confirmed shortly. So what\'s the world record for towing a shed? And, if they can go that fast, why do the old f**** always tootle along at 60 km/h?
  • Volvo v. Omega ? 16 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Hi there everyone. I've been thinking about trading in my 1991 940 SE Turbo for a recent Omega (2-3 years old). I need a big car and the Omega seems to be about the biggest available. I've been fairly lucky with my Volvo so far (touch wood !!!) and don't want to buy into a load of expensive problems. I've resd lots of coflicting views on Omega reliability running costs etc. and am confused to say the least.
  • CALLING VOLVO V40 OWNERS/SPECIALISTS 20 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Intermittent starting problem, with engine sometimes cranking unevenly then starting on 2, then 3, then 4 cylinders. Management light comes on with code for crank sensor. Car is 9 months / 7k old still under warranty. Dealer has had car three times and now replaced the crank sensor, but my feeling is that the problem is more valve related, possible with hydraulic lifters jacking / sticking.
  • Audi A3 - Spontaneous combustion 1 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Yesterday morning I went to take my ageing mother shopping in the local town. As I left the supermarket I had a call from my wife. "Come home now, my car is on fire!" My wife's car is a 16 year old Audi A3 with the 1.9 TDi engine and has been fairly painless to own despite her driving mostly short journeys around rural lanes. She couldn't give me any more information as she was obviously pre-occupied with the potential conflagration.
  • BMW 1 series - So I bought this car........ 20 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Have just picked up a 10 year old BMW 1 series petrol. Autotrader ad states a 3 month warranty on the car. On handover this morning, the trader tells me 'he doesn't remember seeing this on the advert'. Fortunately I took a couple of screen grabs of the adverts and sent them to him.
  • Service Car at dealership or back street shop 10 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Although I mention the civic I guess this is a general question in regards to the subject as I'm also considering my wife's car and what we'd do with future cars too.
  • High mileage driver looking for next (used) car 17 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I bought it 5 yrs ago with 85k on the clock. I love the car, and it still goes like a train (300 miles yesterday) and returns about 38mpg. It is fast, comfortable, practical and drives like a dream. I'm looking for another used car, but am wary of buying a diesel which is about 5 yrs old and facing big bills, yet my mileage points to a diesel as the logical choice.
  • Luxury German Make / 4 seat cabriolet - Breakdown 1 hour/ 50 miles after purchase 20 Oct 2013 (Forum)
I purchased a 2 year old 19,000 mile car from a large car supermarket 3 weeks ago and drove it 50 miles home.   The car would then not start (after 1 hour of ownership) and was towed to the local main dealer and has been there ever since.
  • Honda Jazz 1.2 i-VTEC SE [VSA] - Jazz 1.2 Juddering at first gear 9 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I bought an used Honda Jazz 1.2 i-VTEC SE [VSA] (a little over 2 years old with a 59 number plate, manual transmission) from a main Honda dealer a month ago. The car has only got 14,000 miles on the clock (13,700 miles when I bought it a month ago). Now I notice that when I pull away from still and change from first to 2nd gear after the car reaches about 10-15 miles/per hour on the first, the car judders and produces a 'clinking' sound.
  • Hyundai Elantra - Is this a good buy? 16 May 2010 (Forum)
logcode=p">http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201016357309806/sort/priceasc/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/model/elantra/make/hyundai/page/1/radius/1501/postcode/rh20rn?logcode=p The good points about the car are:- 1) Its got a complete service history, mostly  all but one from Hyundai dealers. 2) Cam belt has been changed at 70,000 miles. The bad points about the car:- 1) Much above average mileage for its age. 6 year old car, run 109,000 miles.
  • Car incident - a nutter on the road 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I had to say it about 3 times before he went back to his car. He tried to make a point by cutting me up afterwards but I was almost stationary and waiting to turn right anyway. What a loser. He was driving an old shape corsa. This was just a few hours ago in busy traffic.
  • Time wasters 'selling' cars 27 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Cars 'with service history' had, at best, patchy service books and no receipts. One car, despite being advertised with history, had no service stamps after the year 2000 and 8k miles. It now had 104k miles.
  • Toyota Yaris - Keys and Deal questions 15 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Firstly, the car is now over 3 years old, but does not currently have an MOT. As the car has not been resident in the UK for the last 6 months or so, does this matter? He will bring it back to the UK and put an MOT on it before any money changes hands.
  • Sell to a dealer - V5 and cherished no. 12 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Hi Back Room, I am selling my car to a dealer, it currently has a "personal" plate on it which I want to put "on retention" until I get a replacement. I have the appropriate form from the DVLA for putting the reg on retention. They need the V5 with the form, and presumably they issue a new V5 with the old date-plate reg on it.
  • If Microsoft Built Cars 24 Oct 2001 (Forum)
You might have heard these, but there amusin anyway and maybe some of you can think of some more. IF MICROSOFT MADE CARS. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, all cars over two years old would need a new engine. Occasionally your car would stop on the motorway for no reason. You would just accept this and restart and drive on.
  • Ford Mondeo - LPG? Forget it! 19 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Hi, If you ever think about converting your car to LPG then think very long and hard first and preferably go and lie down in a darkened room until the madness passes. It might work on some cars but it has been a complete and utter disaster for me and I'm very badly out of pocket.
  • Seat Leon FR TDi 170: 5,500mile report 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
As promised a review of my Leon at 5,500 miles and 4 months For comparison, my previous car was a Toledo 110 TDi (old, non-PD lump) and my wife?s car is an Octavia 2.0 TDi with the 140bhp engine. Overall I?m very pleased with the car. It still looks distinctive in a way the Golf never will without being so boy-racer-ish it attracts the wrong kind of attention.
  • Online tyre websites 8 Mar 2025 (Forum)
    Any other decent alternatives (good prices and reasonable car taken over the car) would be useful and appreciated. Cheers Matt {Subject header renamed as several other online tyre websites are also being mentioned in this thread - DD}
  • PCP time bomb 28 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Hi, An old topic but a chat with a car salesman’s on Monday got me thinking. He works for a Porsche dealer and they have been doing well post covid. However, noticed a slight slowdown July and August but nothing unusual with it being holiday time.
