  • E-sure renewal beaten by E-sure @ TescoCompare 5 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Just nipped into TescoCompare website - Cheapest E-sure - same cover £40 less. The inmates seem to be running the "Premium Calculations" New customer off the street gets 18% less than an existing customer of 6 years (I was one of their 1st motor policy holders) - the renewal said NCB Discount 70% + 5% for being with them claim free for 6 years.
  • Diesel - is the honeymoon over? 8 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Here are my thoughts: * Concern over reliability of CR engines (misfueling etc) * Petrol engines becoming more & more efficient * More electric / hybrid cars on the market now * Diesel prices going up recently (accepted this has happened to normal petrol too though, I paid £1.13 per litre last week) One thing that makes me doubt that diesel has had it's day is that the price of 2nd hand diesels remains high despite concerns (on this board for example) about reliability. Usually, cars known for unreliability & high running costs don't hold their values as well i.e. Saabs, Masseratis.

  • Alfa Romeo 156 (1998 - 2005) - Battery 8 Nov 2007 (Forum)
My battery is running flat after 3-4 days. AA man has been out twice now, he has told me that it is the battery, however, having changed the battery, still getting the same problem. AA man states it the battery beacuse it fails a load test.
  • Help me choose a car! 24 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hi, It's my first time in here so be gentle! I've got to give my company car back at the end of the month and I need to buy a run-around. I get the train to work most days so won't be covering many miles in it. I used to have a Diesel Rover 75 which I loved but I'm not sure I can afford another now - my budget is £2.5 to £3K.
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - 96 Cabriolet, 5 speed auto fuel consumption 24 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I have only had this car a few months; but I have had the same sort of car a few years ago. It is a 1996 e320 cabriolet with a 5 speed auto. The car is running very well hot and cold but the fuel consumption is always in the low 20s - it is about 5mpg worse than my previous model. Any ideas what to check - all the usual has been done - tyres, brakes, engine has just been serviced.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2003 HDi Handbrake 20 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Since the handbrake uses a drum within the rear disc, it never gets any wear on the linings, and in fact I don't think mine had ever got properly bedded in. Simply run (preferably down a steepish hill or two to avoid fuel wastage) with the handbrake firmly on,to bed in the brake linings properly, and the handbrake will subsequently work much better. It might then be worth re-adjusting using a screwdriver through the hole on the drum, to maximise the benefit.
  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - Turning your engine off at traffic lights? 16 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I?ve often heard that to start a car?s engine requires more fuel than leaving it running at a set of traffic lights for a short while? Is this true? If you have a warm engine, why does it need ?extra? fuel to start it? If this is true, how long would you need to be waiting at the lights before it becomes more economical to turn the engine off and re-start when the lights go green?
  • Value of '96 mondeo 26 Jul 2007 (Forum)
How much do you reckon i should ask when i come to sell it over the next few weeks? Just had new front disc/pads for the mot. Engine runs fine. Starts first time. Over the last two years it has had a new exhaust and alternator. Basically to me it is a good runner and should last at least a year without any problems.
  • Quick tip - Luton Airport parking 7 Jul 2007 (Forum)
As the holidays season is soon upon us, Quick tip, if anyone is flying out of Luton Airport and leaving their car at one of the long term parking that is available, then think about using Luton Airport Parkway Rail Station 7days parking there was £20.70 the last time I used it ( a few eeks ago), free bus to airport, runs about every 20mins during day, and this carpark has full CCTV and is patrolled. Daily is £4.60 which again I think can't be beaten by short to mid stay rate ? Dont' think you will beat that, even leaving your car in a field to be molested Ta
  • Golf timing belt and service 7 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hello All I would like your views on if and when to have changed the timing belt and associated bits on my 2000 golf mk4 1.6 105bhp. Its done 38k miles from new and I have done 13 k of that in long runs in a year since i bought it. So whilst its not at 60k and wont be for years which i think is the normal belt time. I am asking if at 7 years old it should be done just because of the time factor! Also can anyone suggest a good value place to have the work done in the york leeds area...... thanks paul
  • Valeting charges 2 Jul 2007 (Forum)
    * Wash&Hoover including doorshuts, bout 1hr 30 mins work * Wash, hoover, polish & windows, 2.5-3 hours work * Full valet, anywhere from 3- 6 hours work ( some charge extra if it over runs ) How much are these worth? I often wonder because the charges vary so much, there seems to be very little market average despite the basic result being the same.
  • Bio Diesel 2 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi there I own a Peugeot 406 HDi on a 02 plate, and I want to try running it on Bio Diesel at 5 or 10% but I cant find out from Peugeot UK if this will harm the engine. They claim to have no information on the subject! I also have the option of using 100% Bio Diesel, but as the car is still under warranty I don't want to cause any problems.
  • Driving Lights Wiring Help 9 May 2007 (Forum)
However, the question is this: I am a little confused as there is only one wire coming form the back of the plastic lamp housing which is terminated with a small tubular crimp connector. I sort of expected to see two, a live and a ground\earth. Am I missing something or do I just run a ground to the car frame. Any help would be gratefully received. Steve

  • Diesel *fuel* engine flush oil light on 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I`ve heard about it for years and have always been horrified at the thought of the camlobe pressures (etc) when Derv is used as a flushing oil. But on another forum, someone has just run a petrol engine for 30mins at tickover on derv instead of engine oil with the oil pressure light on the whole time. Someone else did this at 1,500 revs to keep the pressure light out. As usual I`m interested in any evidence one way or the other of outcomes from this proceedure.

  • 406 110bhp hdi 25 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The mpg has dropped from around 48mpg on the x reg to under 40 on the new one. He told me the engine has more go in it and feels quite 'tight' still as hes run in plenty of new cars. I was wondering if the mpg will increase with more miles and if theres anything that can be done to get the most out of his fuel like changing to fully synthetic oil etc? He does around 35,000 miles a year so it makes a big difference to the fuel bill.
  • daewoo matiz water leak again. 8 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Well just got home today with loads of steam coming from under the bonnet. Got the r.a.c. out to have a look, he put a pressure tester on it and water started running out from underneath. he could not see where the leak was coming from but suspected the plastic manifold, what-ever this is. Any way, the garage is now having a look at it, and i am waiting a phone call.
  • Advice... cheap runaround required 22 Feb 2007 (Forum)
This will be my third car I have a maximum budget of £1500. I've been thinking about buying a dirt cheap car with 12 months MOT and basically run it into the ground and replace it the following year if necessary (i.e. MOT failure!)... but not too sure what to do. Any advice/recommendations welcome! Cheers.
