  • Volkswagen Polo IV (2002-2005) - 2004 1.4 Burning rubber smell from engine 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The garage where I serviced it recommended that I have the timing belt replaced as it's VW recommendation to change it every 4 years, even though I have done very few miles, the belt looked old. Car details: VW Polo Twist 1.4, manual (2004), mileage: 8,000 miles. I don't get a sharp screech on starting up the engine, so possibly not the fan belt. Could this smell come from the timing belt not being fitted properly or is there often a settling down period for these items?
  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - random tyre pressures 2 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I have included the make of my car in case it is relevant to my question. My Jazz is 2 1/2 years old and has covered 17000 miles. Until May this year the tyres have lost pressure in a manner I would expect - equal across all tyres. Since May [I keep records] loss has been random - once the steering and brakes felt so odd I returned home.
  • Audi - Is this why Insurance Premiums are costlier? 26 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, Had an unfortunate incident where I had scratched the bumper of my A6 against an A5 in the Audi showroom car park. The showroom contacted their recommended repairers who mentioned a repair figure of hold your breath £1133 for the A5 and £1624 for the A6 Mine is a 3 year old car and Im not sure whether I should ask my insurers whether to go along with their recommended repairers ,or the Audi showrooms recommendation.
  • Volkswagen Golf Plus (2005 - ) - Been offered a stonking deal...where's the catch? 18 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Anyway, short story, have been offered around £3,000 off list price for a brand new 1.9 TDI. Apparently it's a "pack" car which is one they buy of VW directly and sell themselves instead of selling on behalf of VW and picking up a commission - thus allowing them slightly more profit. Is this a good deal? Is this just because of the credit crunch (I've certainly seen fewer people in car showrooms of late)?
  • The most economical... 16 Jul 2008 (Forum)
...car around £5k? My Mum has written off her Mondeo, and whilst everything is fine, she's looking at much smaller cars these days than when she bought the TDCi, my Dad having now got a much larger cruiser for their Spainish trips.
  • Driving can still be enjoyable! 8 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Very crisp turn in (I can recomend the Falken FK452s) and responsive steering, really great fun! Not bad for a five year old car with nearly 120k on the clock, really drives as well as when new in these circumstances (I have had it since new), in fact perhaps better, it has become freer revving as the miles have accumulated.
  • BMW 5 Series split alloy wheel 11 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My brother's partner was driving her 5 series (not sure which model but only 1 or 2 years old) when she felt the rear of the car handling funny so pulled over and stopped. When she got out she discovered that the rear alloy wheel had split in two, around the full circumference! A friend got the wheel off the car and spare on.
  • Turbo leaking oil - Mercedes ML320 CDi 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I have also noticed a vibration under heavy accelaration, could this be down to the turbo blades being coated in oil? The car has been to the dealers 8 times already and is due to go back in today, I have had enough now even though the car is fantastic. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Main dealer vs. independant 22 Feb 2007 (Forum)
    By my calculations (based on phone calls to a few garages): (MB) A service = £325 / (Indi) A service = £160 (MB) B service = £600 / (Indi) B service = £380 So if in 3 years I need 2 x A and 1 x B then it'll cost: MB = £1250 Indi = £700 (indi saving £550) If it needs 1 x A and 1 x B it'll cost: MB = £925 Indi = £540 (indi saving £385) The question is, once a car like this is 7-8 years old, if it's in good shape generally is it so important for it to have the FMBSH?
  • Its 1969 again ( headgaskets iron heads) 3 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The sun is on your back, the budgie is on its perch and `lady Madonna` issues from the 2 watt car radio. Yes, its a great July Saturday morning in 1969, you pop the bonnet on your parents drive and BMC`s green cast iron motor gleams back. The long reach sparkplugs slip out easily in their copper greased, cast iron threads and yes, there it is again, down the plughole in a shaft of light, easily picked out by your 17 year old eyes....
  • German service history! 28 Oct 2006 (Forum)
We were just about to purchase an 18 month old small hatch from a main dealer. We had been told the car had not been serviced by the garage as it had didnt need one as it had been serviced at 13k (present mileage 15k). When I asked to see the service book I found the service had been done by a German dealer garage, I stated that I wasnt impressed with this and it didnt seem right.
  • Used Merc, Jag or BMW for £25k? 10 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Hi Folks I'm about to opt out of a company car scheme and buy myself a car for the first time in 20 years. I need good space for me and 3 large kids, a decent drive, something classy but without stupid running costs. I currently have a Merc E320CDI, which I love and which I've put 80,000 miles on in 2 1/2 years.

  • Ford Ka - smell on braking/manoeuvring 12 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I have a Ford Ka, 2 years old, 12000 miles. The other day, I drove 20 miles, and then had to do a multi-point turn to get into a tight parking spot. Up to that point, there had been no smell in the car, but as I braked, reversed, braked, went forward, etc, the cabin filled with an unpleasant rotten smell.
  • Laguna Starting problems 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I'm no expert but it is possible that something's making it harder to turn to engine over which is causing this (ie increased compression )? Car runs fine otherwise, but instinct tells me to get rid of the car asap. Possibly a bad move, but I supplied the starter myself (Hella from GSF) for the garage to fit, which makes warranty replacemant a bit of a palaver.
  • engine failure-oil warning light - Focus 29 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I have a Ford Focus Turbo Diesel 4 years old which I have always had serviced regularly. The car broke down in England on the motorway with a fire and black acrid smoke - the emergency mechanic told me the engine had seized and it was in complete failure.

This includes, Air refresher assembly, £28.00, Castrol Oil £30.00, Labour £100.00, Petrol Treatment £10.00, Engine Flush £10.00, Brake de-dust £3.00, Superlube £4.00, Oil filter and drain plug gasket £7.00.
  • Tyre life: a report 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Juts back from Micheldever Tyres, having fitted Michelin Pilot Exaltos to the rear of my Golf VR6. The old Firestones had lasted 35,000 miles since new with the car; there was about 3mm of tread left, but there were too many small cracks around the edge for comfort, age having taken its toll over seven years.
  • Honda Prelude Type-S, opinions? 31 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Thing is, even with Honda's build quality, I'm a bit nervous about buying a six year old sports car - I suppose there could be a lot of expensive stuff waiting to go wrong, but on the other hand it is a lovely motor. Does anyone have any experience of these? Any opinions? Any advice?
