  • UK driving licence changes - from 19 January 2013 8 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I seriously dispute a bike licence, however good, qualifies one to drive what is really a car with one fewer wheel. The new situations regulations are summed up here: http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/index/information-and-services/motoring/driver-licensing/changes-to-driving-licence-rules-from-19-january-2013/new-rules-for-vehicles-you-can-drive-and-minimum-ages.htm True it's the Northern Ireland version, but I think the rules across the UK are the same and the English web site only shows the current rules.
  • How to drive an autobox 15 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Tried to email this to HJ direct from his on-line Telegraph column this week, but the system confused my computer. Answering one guy, HJ once again insisted that left-foot braking is best when driving an automatic because, as I understood it, autos cover more ground during an emergency stop situation as the drive is not disconnected instantly and a left foot straight on the brake is faster than moving the right foot from the accelerator to the brake.
  • USA car hire - international driving licence? 18 Jun 2015 (Forum)
The licence requirements first state that UK drivers need to present their photocard. Then a second sentence states that an international driving licence is/or may be required, depending on hirer. Can anyone with experience of recent usa car hire comment?

  • Driving using 3rd party insce ext of my policy 21 Jul 2008 (Forum)
If I drive a friends car which is not currently insured (is taxed and mot'd) using the 3rd party cover of my own policy, is it legal to leave it A) parked on the road or B) in a retail shopping centre car park as I presume it would then be classed as uninsured.

  • which car is the Citroen 2cv for today? 27 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The 2cv was designed to be a) good for driving over fields and very rough tracks b) cheap Seems to me that today everyone wanting to drive over that kind of terrain wants a 4X4. What inexpensive, 2wd car, available in the UK today would one buy for driving over very rough tracks?
  • Buying a Vel Satis 31 Oct 2004 (Forum)
We're talking 3.5 V6 Initiale for about 20 000 Euro in Germany, 2-years old. HJ's Car-by-Car Breakdown says it's: "A very different driving experience from almost anything else. Curiously un-carlike to drive, but not unpleasant." Hmmm... I'm scheduled for a test drive on Saturday. What do you think ?

  • Renault Clio - Question: Renault drive shafts - Megane and Clio 8 Jul 2017 (Forum)
He didn't keep it for long when he found out there is a significant problem with the design of the offside drive shaft.  There is a splined coupling joining two sections of the shaft together.  Sometimes known as a 'Muff' cooupling.  The splines on this coupling shred meaning drive is lost on that side.
