The 2cv was designed to be
a) good for driving over fields and very rough tracks
b) cheap
Seems to me that today everyone wanting to drive over that kind of terrain wants a 4X4.
What inexpensive, 2wd car, available in the UK today would one buy for driving over very rough tracks?

after watching many episodes of 'police camera action; in order of the best cars for driving over fields, usually with people playing football on them are............
nova
corsa
cavalier
metro
astra
fiesta
followed by the occasional exotica like a mondeo or vectra

>>>>Imagine a Euro NCAP test of a 2CV.
I recall James Bond crashing one (well rolling it down a hill) in "For Your Eyes Only" and walking away.

Id say a basic Fiat Panda is closest for market position and space.

Pluriel, in some respects (looks/roof. KInd of.)
|
Daihatsu Charade? Or one of the other Japanese 'tall microcars'?
|
Citroen Berlingo with full length sunroof?

Interesting suggestions. I guess the key feature of the 2cv that made it a great car for very rough lanes was the tough suspension. So . . . how tough is the suspension in the various cars that have been nominated?

i would have said more flat floor so it didnt get stuck

On the Car-by-Car Breakdown it says that 2CVs are being made again but on the website linked it does not mention this, only restoration. Even so look at the prices of them!!! www.frome-2cv.co.uk

Tata are developing a Rs100,000 car .......1500 pounds....though i think it will be around 2000 pounds. Nothing known beyond a 2 cyl 700 cc engine. GE is working on a plastic body for it. Main cost reductions will be by outsourcing and smaller assembly factories located in different parts of India. If successful, concept could been seen in Africa. Google for info on the Tata Ace - this is their pick up flat bed that they cannot make enough of. It shares a lot of the underpinnings. Not a bad venhicle - fast enough not to hold up traffic ad not too fast to be a menace
Car will be EURO 4 compliant. No idea re: safety
