Testing hand brakes 23 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Some BRs, replying to the recent thread on electronic parking brakes, said they very rarely applied the handbrake, especially with automatic gearboxes. I was brought up with the old asbestos linings, and drum and disc steels that were very reluctant to corrode when the car was left unused for a while. -
Why is my Ford Focus using so much fuel? 13 Nov 2014 (Ask HJ)
I have purchased a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 automatic. However, it uses lots of fuel and I'm getting about 21mpg. Is this normal? And if not, what could be... -
Mazda 3 - Skyactiv 2.2 diesel engine-low mileage suitability 17 Apr 2014 (Forum)
However, I've come across a number of HJ comments (see links below) reassuring potential buyers that the new Mazda 2.2 Skyactiv diesel engine should not suffer DPF problems thanks to its exhaust manifold in head configuration. I have a choice between an automatic 120 PS petrol Mazda 3 2014 and a manual 2.2 150 PS diesel. The cost is about the same but the petrol comes with leather interior. I expect the diesel to be worth about 30% more than the petrol when I come to sell it in ~8 years time. -

BMW E39 530i sport - Advice needed on rejecting a car!!! 1 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Story is, I bought a second hand 2001 BMW 530i sport Auto on August the 8th this year with 70,719 miles and paid £2995. 7 weeks and 540 miles later the automatic gearbox has failed,it's lost drive in 3rd and 4th. Had a mechanic recover it this morning to find the issue and he's found teeth from the gears in with the oil and says it needs replacing or rebuilding. -
Need reliable, smooth-riding, auto mimser-killer. 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Hello, All, I need a four/five-seater automatic with smart upper-legal-speeds acceleration. It's for a 180-miles-in-an-evening trip on busy-both-ways A-roads which are mostly single-carriageway, and bendy at that. Get caught in the wrong car behind a lorry/caravan/mimser doing 45mph on a lengthy 60mph section with regular oncomers and that's half as long again it'll take you. -
Suggest a car for my father? 23 Jun 2013 (Forum)
So, please suggest a modest sized, slightly higher than normal car with the ability to order things like in built satnav, leather seats, petrol, automatic, good visibilty etc. Sounds like a job for a Juke as SWMBO has, but I'm sure its the right car for him. Something like the Honda CRV is probably unnecessarily big. -
Petrol or Diesel? 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I currently have a Honda Civic 2.2 i-cdti but will be looking at some point to change. I would prefer a car with an automatic gearbox and preferably diesel for better economy (depreciation not much of an issue as i will be looking for a car about 2-3 years old) but most diesels now have a dpf as standard which can get clogged. -
Fabia 3 estate 1.6 auto - petrol - Should I buy this car? 14 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Hello, First post but I've read a lot of the old threads. I've taken first option on a 59plate fabia estate 1.6 petrol, automatic gearbox, top spec. It is a rare, and doesn't seem to appear in the brochures or in webland. I assume the engine is a 1.6 FSi usually found in the octavia, and am prepared to use 5-star petrol (am I showing my age!) -
Mazda 121 - Mazda 121 Problem with Stuttering/Stalling (auto) 18 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I wanted to ask you about a problem that has developed with our mazda 121, its a 1997 model (it genuinly looks like a ford fiesta to me in my opinion though, but I dont want to offend ford or mazda's loyal fans by saying so incase anyone takes offence) Its an automatic too but when I start it from been stood (cool engine) and put it in Drive or Reverse it really stutters/shudders and quite often cuts out? It sems to be getting gworse and I wanted to ask what was going wrong to cause this as I keep it serviced on a regular basis and Its well looked after by myself or so I thought. -

Volkswagen Polo III - Polo engine cutting out 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Hope you can help After being stuck in stop go traffic for over an hour on a really hot day, I got 100yd from my home and the engine cut out. I managed to get it restarted but as it was an automatic I really battled to get it home but finally did. Left the car for about an hour or two and managed to get it started again so drove it a few meters into the garage. Next day when starting the car it would just cut out. -

Ford Fiesta: 2001 1.25 Zetec - Timing Belt Tensioner, change of design? 21 Aug 2010 (Forum)
However the replacement that came with the kit from Unipart does not have the adjustable slot, just a hole and no way of adjusting the tension ( I presume it does it automatically as you release the pin?) Is the one in the kit ok to fit as when I queried the difference at the shop I got it from the guy said 'it must be the right one, it's the only one listed'. Thanks for your help, -
Nissan Micra (2003 - 2010) - Multi Quote Car Insurance Woes 14 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My folks purchased a new Nissan Micra Tekna 1240cc Automatic (on a 59 plate) late least year with a scrappage offer (despite now seeing their old car on the road since). However, their insurance now needs renewal and their existing company seems expensive. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.4 Starting problems!! 21 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Hi i was wondering if anybody could offer me some advice. My 1994 clio automatic is having problems. It starts first time in a morning, no problems what so ever. However, after driving for around half an hour, especially on the motorway, as i stop at say a roundabout the car looses all power and really struggles to move.
