Why is my Ford Focus using so much fuel?

I have purchased a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 automatic. However, it uses lots of fuel and I'm getting about 21mpg. Is this normal? And if not, what could be causing it?

Could be. Depends how you are using the car. If you zero the meter then take it for a 100mile run cross country and still only get 21mpg then something is wrong. Should get about 35mpg.
