  • Changed times with winter conditions 25 Dec 2009 (Forum)
As part of this they showed footage of the "old days" with bad weather and this showed: a postman pulling a sledge full of mail over a frozen loch lomond a full street of residents all out shovelling snow off pavements and roads a steam train blasting its way through a snow pile up Now OK we have got a lot more traffic , we have H&S and we have lots of wealthy lawyers but how many of this week's weather issues could have been avoided? - everyone clears the pavement in front of their house, maybe the road as well. If neighbour elderly or infirm, do theirs as well - rather than ignoring the "don't travel unless necessary" message, pay attention to it - rather than blaming councils and everyone else about lack of gritting, what can you do to help?
  • Ford Probe (1994 - 1998) - 95 2.5 Electrical / water short 20 Nov 2009 (Forum)
    If so, where are the water traps and where shall I liberally apply gaffer tape and bathroom sealant to prevent this happening again? I noticed that the fuse box in the N/S engine bay was making a buzzing at the time of the problem, so maybe this could be a lead culprit? {shouting in header amended. Welcome to the forum, btw}
  • Health & Safety.Useful or Waste of Time? [RO] 6 Nov 2009 (Forum)
An Army veteran, selling poppies in a shopping centre in Portsmouth, was asked to leave as he had not undergone a "Risk Assessment. 2. 2 Metropolitan police officers, despite having a spare wheel and a jack in their vehicle, had to wait 2 hours for the designated contractor to turn out and do the job for them. (This may be more a contractural issue than H&S to be fair) 3. Feeling Green, and wanting save whales or chipmunks or whatever, a couple walked 400 yards to their local waste disposal centre to get rid of some rubbish. They were told that they could only come by car as there was no approved pedestrain access.
  • Beware hiring an "automatic" car. 2 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Instead you had to select R or a drive position on the quadrant else it was in neutral. I did a RTFM to find out what was the proper procedure(s) Select E ( auto) M ( manual) or R ( reverse) "Do not turn off the engine until 1st or reverse is engaged properly and completely. Parking the vehicle without a gear engaged may cause the vehicle to move result in an accident" I discovered the problem very early in the hire.
  • Toyota - Suspicious Californian Lexus Crash 8 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Since that could be a public relations disaster for Toyota, and perhaps for the industry in general, its perhaps not surprising they would prefer to blame a carpet. I?ve seen no reports in the ?official? media questioning Toyota?s explanation. I guess Woodward and Birnstein have retired.
  • Body assembly 29 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Perhaps it had to come off for painting, perhaps the old one was damaged and this is a replacement. In any case it is slightly lopsided and too low all the way across, and the n/s wing panel isn't fitted right either where it meets this big plastic bumper-grille thingy. Tsk. I thought women noticed that sort of thing. I would expect a decent body shop to be able to adjust it quickly and cheaply, but when I mentioned it she became alarmed.
  • Jaguar XK8 and XKR (1996 - 2006) - Stunt parking of Jag XK8 Convertible 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Our cars are getting older, but oh so much more inspiring. Having seen his car I now want to change my new Nissan Qashqai for an S-Type. Yes, it's never-ending. Having previously only used our garage for storing everything that really should be put away in the house, we have now cleaned it out, in the hope that the Jag will fit in - not for everyday, but maybe for when we are away.
  • Swearing...... 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Perhaps this is new to someone ? No ? Well then I am mystified. Is anybody particularly offended by the letter "s" and thinks that using "$" instead purifies the word ? Perhaps "i" bothers you and "1" is somehow cleaner and less troublesome ? Maybe "@" stands for a better ideal than "a" ?? Or perhaps some people are confused and incapable of communication without dedicating some small part of their limited intellect to getting a word past the sweary thing by using special characters ?
  • Hyundai i10 (2008 - ) - Experiences of i10 ownership! 11 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Tthe problem was that the dealers battery tester said that it was ok - while the RAC bloke said it was kaput. The RAC chap kindly rang the dealer and supplied documentary evidence saying the battery was u/s. The dealer accepted this and the hunt began for a spare battery.... not ONE was to be found in the country !! - the dealer retrieved one from a brand new i10 that had been delivered that afternoon !
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe (2009 - ) - You're the one that I want?... 30 Jun 2009 (Forum)
So, having now read HJ's full Road Test and in possession of a min-brochure and the promise of a 2/3-hour solo test-drive I never imagined that I would be 'diverted away' from my desire to own a 3.0 Diesel S XF, but I believe that I'm about to be?
  • The exponential ascent of the 'green' movement. 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Thinking back to when I was a lad reading car mags and watching Top Gear in the 90's, I never came across any mention of 'carbon' this and 'eco' that save for the odd eccentric article. I'd like to know exactly when the environmental movement really started to get a toe-hold and affect the motoring world as it has.

  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - MK5 1.9 TDi electric heater 22 May 2009 (Forum)
From 'research' on the net today there is a 1kw ceramic heater moulded into the dash. For those of you who are thinking wow how do you get that to work then this is for 'S' spec car with climatic control set the heat range to 26 degrees (some say 90% of range others 50%) press the econ button so that the led is OFF Turn the fan to whatever speed you want, maybe be better off with 1 first off to see that it is working and off you go.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 rear wiper not wiping fully 25 Mar 2009 (Forum)
When the rear washer was depressed the wiper would wipe across the window fully 5 times and then settle normally in the correct place but sometimes not. In searching I have found the most common fault is the relay?s, Ford Parts Centre insisted that this was the fault, I have changed both of the relays for the windows in the fuse box and still no difference. The next thing I changed was the rear wiper motor, this again made no difference.

'GLAZIER Paul Kerfoot has been banned from fixing a cop shop?s windows because he has been done for speeding. A snotty letter told him he could not work for the police because they were ?committed to the maintenance of high levels of honesty and integrity?. Yesterday dad-of-three Paul, 55, who has nine points on his licence after three speeding offences, fumed: ?
  • Beautiful cars on film 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
My lovely stepdaughter bought me a lovely Christmas present. I'd been trying for ages to get the 70's series ''The Winds of War'' on DVD, well the beautiful girl found it and bought it for me. I also managed thanks to her to find a week later ''War and Remembrance'' which was filmed some 6 years later, some 40 hours long altogether, they don't make em like that anymore, more's the pity.
  • The car and `motoring` as a criminal tool/actvity 6 Jan 2009 (Forum)
A thief exited a local house in mid afternoon recently and apparently got into a waiting car - another incident led to a car being fully loaded and driven off this time in the early hours. There`s more than this.. but confining it to cars and `motoring` have you ever seen similar? What may be a sussing out of property vulnerability by car.
  • Volkswagen Golf VI (2009 - ) - Shall I, or shan't I? 3 Jan 2009 (Forum)
There is supposed to be a quantum leap in the quality of the interior but the heater controls are just rather flimsy circular dials with poor indication of their position and on one model, I could hardly move the directional air vents for fear of snapping the flexing plastic louvres! My biggest gripe is that a sunroof is no longer an option on the S or SE, only on the top of the range GT. Also, some of the bright, shiny alloys have been replaced with a funny greyish two tone alloy finish thus making brake dust less obvious, I suppose. I was also surprised to see that there wasn't any fancy underbonnet engine cover but -instead the underside of the bonnet lid had sound-proofing padding.
  • Advice on replacement family car 16 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Whilst I don't mind it and it fits the space requirements, I'm not convinced that we need a 4x4. Am thinking something like a 2.2 diesel S-Max. Better value second hand, huge inside (although granted don't need 7 seats, but useful on occassion). Any views? This car will be a keeper for some time so depreciation not that high on the agenda.
