  • Overheating Carlton 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
t happening after sitting in traffic for several minutes (it never gets that busy up here!), rather it?s just normal, quite slow, driving in lower gears for maybe 5 to 10 minutes with frequent pauses (pedestrian crossing etc). I tested the viscous coupling operation, off the car, using a hairdryer?.after it got quite hot (uncomfortable to hold) it stiffened up rather well I thought.
  • alarm question 2 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I thought and patted myself on the back but... now the siren doesn\'t work, the immobiliser is back on line so the fix worked but in the process of dismantling the alram unit, soldering or reassmebly I have damaged something related to the siren or amplifier. The siren itself connects by two wires, and a small plug, to the alarm\'s printed circuit board. I disconnected this when soldering. when soldering I did acidentally touch a capacitor on the PCB witht the side of the iron, could this have damaged the capacitor in some way?
  • High pitch noise when bearing right? 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
After a few miles driving (i.e. when the car has warmed up) a high pitch noise occurs when the road veers to the right. This noise therefore occurs when I turn the steering to the right, it?s comes from the front of the car most likely the driver side wheel. When I turn the steering to the left the noise will automatically go. Also when the noise is occurring if I tap on the brake pedal it will go for a few seconds.
  • Unleaded vs Unleaded Plus 30 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Also, is there not an additive I could use with normal unleaded petrol to kill the noise instead of having to use the Unleaded Plus fuel? Thx. S.
  • Volvo 760 Behaving Badly 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The jobs done over the weekend include; Replace distributor cap, rotor, leads, plugs, idle control valve, clean throttle body. Good increase in performance but no help in curing fault(s). Personally I think it is the MAF unit but do not want to go to the expense as the car is up for renewal next year. As always any help is much appreciated.

  • Renault 19 1.4 Energy Engine change 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Im also slightly worried that the M reg car had a cat and therefore a whole host of associated sensors talking to the ECU :S Also, I guess the injection version of the engine is not much different so could I get away with simply un-bolding the sack of pink fluffy dice off the top and putting the carb (which is still good) from his old engine onto it ?
  • Audi Reclaim Question 17 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Do you think I should go back to the audi dealer for a reclaim or I just have to live with it? (I bet the replacment must costs a hand and a leg as it´s an audi thing and therefore synonimous to quality HA!) Thank you for your patience, Stavros.
  • Older cars at auction? 15 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Also the last time I stopped over on the way to work I noticed alot of 'bangers' grouped in an inchcape sale. Do inchcape specialise in disposal of 80's cars as well as newer fleet stuff. Thanks in advance for any comments and observations! Regards, Mat.
  • Golf 110tdi turbo problems 20 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I bought this car a 98 S last August from a franchised VW dealer. Intially I had a few problems (wheel bearing, Central Locking etc) that the salesman said weren\'t there when I picked it up. Anyway got them sorted on the extended warranty.
  • Avensis vs Legacy 14 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The two options are a Legacy Estate 2.5 gx or an Avensis hatch/estate in 2.0 vvti form. Does anyone have any experience of these cars particularly the subaru? Most of the subaru 2.5's are automatic does this go better with the 4 wheel drive system (less chance of the clutch being knackered) My heart says subaru but my head says the avensis will be way ahead on fuel consumption and general reliability.
  • Alloys 24 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Yes, I know I don\'t really NEED them, but I just hate the plastic wheel trims on my S reg Renault Scenic. I wish I could just either order-up a brand new set of alloys / tyres from the local Renault dealer or pop into Halfords, etc to get a new set, but I just havn\'t got that sort of money.
  • Kangarooing/Stalling 5 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Hello, I have a single point injection ax1.4i tzx, it is using loads too much fuel, and constantly kangarooing and stalling at all speeds, the fault light come on when this happens, but the nearest citroen place is a long way, and the local garage,s computer fault finder would not work on my car for some reason. I have replaced fuel filter and cleaned fuel pump filter to rule those out. a mechanic told me that it is probably a valve sensor that costs around £60 second hand as it is attached to other stuff and you have to buy the lot, the problem is I don,t know which sensor to buy because there are lots of them, can anyone put me right on this please?
  • Golf 1.6 16v Performance probs... 24 Jan 2003 (Forum)
It's as if the ECU makes some kind of decision on how to setup the engine when the car is first started. The car is an import so is now out of warranty but three ECU,s, two EGR valves and several other sensors later and nothing changed. Basically the stealers didn't give a toss because the ECU has never logged any faults. Whether related or not I don't know, but the car has always had a tendency to pink under load, especially with normal unleaded - something the dealers reckon 'they all do'.
  • will dissabled ABS fail MOT???? 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have a 1989 Ford Escort with a crude flywheel/valve/mechanically operated ABS on the front wheels. It has passed the MOT before, however i'm not sure if they tested the ABS :-S. Basically the front-left ABS unlocks the brakes when the wheel locks. That's it!!! it then doesn't allow braking to that wheel for ~30 mins until some valve in the modulator becomes unstuck. This I regard as quite a dangerous persuit, particularly if it happens in wet weather.
  • Saxo coolant problems 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I had a chemical head gasket test-negative, got a pressure test-rad started leaking so got that changed. Had another pressure test no leaks found anywhere and i don\'t have any other signs that it\'s a head gadket prob. Now I am at a dead end. I don\'t want to leave it as if there is air in the system surely this could eventually damage the head? I can\'t go on bleeding the system all the time.
  • Fiat Brava / Bravo cambelt tensioner 8 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Recently called out to a customer who had noticed a "rumbly" noise from cold on his 1.6 16v Bravo, 'S' Reg with 23,000. Noise traced to cambelt tensioner, and subsequent investigation showed that the roller was running out of true due to the locating stud moving on it's mounting plate, which in turn had led to a damaged bearing.
  • Help. Which 4x4? 25 Sep 2002 (Forum)

  • Highway Code 5 May 2002 (Forum)
I jumped out of the car and asked her what the problem was, she said she would like me to reverse in order to clear her way obviously this would have been dangerous to myself and any on coming traffic she clearly did not have any idea what so ever. Incidents like this no doubt happen 1000's of times a day. Why don't the Police use the money from speeding offenses and retrain people to conduct themselves in the correct way when on the road?
