  • Ford Focus - Hesitancy on accelerating after slowing down 16 Dec 2014 (Forum)
And this is where it gets weird, after that for the rest of the journey the car runs absolutely perfectly. Pulls smoothly, good fuel consumption. No problems at all. When I next turn the engine on, the light stays out and I may or may not get my ‘overrun kangaroo’ back.
  • Michelin Energy Saver opinions 10 Nov 2014 (Forum)
As like most people these days,I am feeling the pinch and have been trying out various "maximiling" techniques to try and squeeze every drop out of my ever contracting fuel tank!  So I was wondering about the claims Michelin are making for this tyre. They sound impressive but they are pretty darned expensive in comparison with my usual mid-range choice's (Firestone/Uniroyal/Avon)  I also read somewhere that grip and handling can be somewhat compromised with energy saving tyres, however my driving style and vehicle choice certainly do not push tyres to their limits.
  • Morgan - Nostalgia, or not ! 3 Nov 2014 (Forum)
He spent about two years working on it and returned it to showroom condition.  On the first run he made in the car he planned to fill the tank with fuel at a garage on the main road so he stopped on the crown and waited for an opportuinty to turn in.  A Jaguar driver didn't see him and ran into his back, buckling the car considerably.  He considerably lost heart at the thought of doing all that work again so he sold it on.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Diesel 2008 - Intermittent starting problems 13 Oct 2014 (Forum)
Called the RAC and they plugged in the diagnostics and got two error codes surrounding the fuel rail and pump, and said the pressure in the pump was very low.  He sprayed some easystart in and got it going, and it ran fine to get me home. Took it to my local garage and (would you know it) he just couldn't replicate the problem started perfectly every time he tried throughout the day, and couldn't get any fault codes out of it.
  • 2005 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 E (55 PS) - Help with Diagnostic Codes 15 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I chucked some Cataclean in the tank a few weeks back, cleared the code and the engine light has only just come on again today, but now it's code P0172 (fuel trim too rich - bank 1) and acceleration is slightly hesitant sometimes. The same code has come up everytime I've driven the car today. How can it have suddenly gone from code P0420 to P0172?
  • VW Golf 1999 Mk4 GT TDI 1.9 110 - '99 Golf Mk4 stalls randomly 3 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Could this be blocked injectors? Injector loom? Dodgy fuel? (I use the same Shell station usually) Any ideas gladly received!
  • Automatic to manual Can it be done 26 Feb 2014 (Forum)

  • Skoda Octavia - Used Skoda Octavia - Which Diesel Engine? 21 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Having gone round the houses trying to decide which used cars to consider for my long daily commute (130mile round trip) It looks like an Octavia estate will tick the boxes for long term reliability, good fuel economy, good motorway cruising, spacious boot for hauling bikes and watersports equipment at the weekends. There seems to be a lot of love out there for the 1.9 TDI engine and i read that it will be one of the most dependable options?

  • BMW X3 - Anyone Got Experience With a BMW X3 16 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has got any experience with the x3 2.0d. Main things I'm interested are fuel economy, Ive got an 80 mile round trip to work every day, however it is all motorway, what sort of figures can you expect cruising at 70mph? How are they in the wintery conditions? I'm aware it depends a lot on tyres but assuming I would put winter tyres on are they useful enough in the snow?
  • Ford Focus CC diesel - £942 for a service and work - pants pulled down? 7 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Guy phones me after two hours and says (a) front and rear discs and pads need replacing (b) wipers need replacing (c) fuel additive needs replacing otherwise the DPF could fail and land me with a £1500 bill (d) brake fluid needs changing   Total bill came in at £942. Any opinions as to whether it's reasonable?
  • Vauxhall Antara - A round of applause for my Antara 3 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Well it's almost a year old, 7k miles lots of them towing our caravan (yes I can hear you all groaning) Fuel consumption is steadily increasing, I got 30 mpg whilst towing 1.4 tonnes of 'van from Berwick to Doncaster so it's not all bad! Unscheduled visits to the dealer, zero, faults to report at the first service in two weeks, zero.
  • Renault Clio - Mileage from a full tank of petrol... 7 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Obviously it's hard to specify without me giving you a make and model (sorry) but I'm mainly trying to work out how much my fuel bill will go up. Thanks!
  • Sub-£2k car for 60 mile round commute 25 Jul 2013 (Forum)
The journey's probably 90% single lane / dual carriage way and I'm looking to spend under £2,000. Not really bothered about looks or features (can I be for under £2k?!) and fuel economy is the most important factor - something that does 40 MPG + would be ideal. Any recommendations? I was recommended an older Polo (the 1.9 TDI version) and could be tempted, but I don't have much knowledge of their reliability above the 90k mileage mark, if anyone can shed any light on it?
  • Corsa d 1.3 cdti 95 hp - Stuttering and hesitation under acceleration. 13 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I noticed of recent that there seemed to be more diesel noise than there used to be. My local garage suggested I should change the fuel filter to start with. This was done and it has transformed the car. The hesitation has gone and it drives much better. Whether this works for everyone I don't know but hopefully any other corsa users suffering from this find this useful.
  • VW - 2.0 TDI - are there any good ones? 10 Jul 2013 (Forum)
    - Injector faliure on PD170 engines (which should be getting sorted now VAG are replacing the Siemens injectors?) - issues now coming up with the common rail engines, regarding injectors/high pressure fuel pump faliures Are there actually any good/better variants of the 2.0TDI to go for ie a 2.0TDI pump duse 140 fitted on a Golf/Passat or a pump duse 170 which has had the injectors replaced? Or is it still avoid at all costs and stick with the 1.9TDI?!
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe - Mercedes Classs Coupe Petrol or Diesel 3 May 2013 (Forum)
The extra cost of buying a diesel for the miles I do would take my about 10 years to get back in fuel economy but not too sure if getting a petrol with 80K on the clock is a good idea? I am looking at the Automatic versions C180 most likely although the C230 and C350 look nice. Any other ideas on what to avoid etc, I like the panoramic versions with the two tone interior.
  • Vauxhall Astra 1.7 Diesel 03 Reg - Vauxhall Asttra, Corsa, etc. ISUZU 1.7 Diesel EDU 4 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Hello. I have a Vauxhall which fails to start and after obvious checks, I now suspect the Fuel Pump EDU. I have removed the EDU from this vehicle and temporarily fitted it onto another Astra of around the same era. Uses the same EDU and vehicle is ok. This testing vehicle failed to start when I tested the suspect EDU.
  • Mondeo Diesel Estate TDci 2004 - Non-starting 12 Feb 2013 (Forum)
AA diagnosed glow plug problem. Had glow plugs replaced: two were open circuit, one degraded. Low fuel pressure diagnosed. However, still poor starter from cold, but better when run warm. Running apparently fine. During recent run on motorway, glow plug light flashing. However, running well.
  • Volkswagen Polo III - 2001 1.4 Petrol - Temp gauge drops and raises 4 Feb 2013 (Forum)
If I stick at 70 on the motorway this equates to 3000 rpm and at this speed the needle drops from normal to about 1/4 temp and then raises again. I suspect the sender may be faulty (and I'm also suspicious that I'm getting a poor fuel economy too) and this could be causing the needle to rise and fall. The car starts and drives perfectly and the header tank is on the full mark and has not dropped in the 6+months I've owned the car.
