Skoda Octavia - Used Skoda Octavia - Which Diesel Engine? - Rianp

Having gone round the houses trying to decide which used cars to consider for my long daily commute (130mile round trip) It looks like an Octavia estate will tick the boxes for long term reliability, good fuel economy, good motorway cruising, spacious boot for hauling bikes and watersports equipment at the weekends.

There seems to be a lot of love out there for the 1.9 TDI engine and i read that it will be one of the most dependable options? Does that mean I should avoid the other Octavia engine options available? I did used to own a 1.9 TDI Passat and I must admit that a little extra performance would be nice but I wouldn't be bothered if it's at the expense of relaibility.

Very interested to hear any thoughts / experiences

The 1.9 is by far the better engine in any VAG group car. Don't even consider the 2.0 version, as it's just not worth it.

You can chip the 1.9 if you need to to around 130bhp fairly reliably too.

I drove 35k in an Octavia, and had no issues with the engine itself, although the EGR light came on at 120k needing a new EGR valve though.

Why on earth would you want to chip a car?

The 1.9tdi is pretty bullit proof although a bit acricultural the early 2.0 had many failings but the later 2.0 is again supposedly a very good engine with all the faults ironed out..

From what year would the 2.0 be considered the later version with faulst ironed out? My budget is around the 4k so will probably be looking at a 2005 plate for something around 100,000 miles on it.

I'm also giving some consideration to Volvo V50 - any views on what they are like for reliabilty compared with the Octavia?
