Motorcycle Trailers ? 30 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Having just got back from a European holiday (yes, I had a lovely time...:-) and having seen many bikes towing trailers. It reminded me of a discussion I had with a friend a while ago. He said they were illegal in the UK and I thought they were not actually covered by any legalisation in the UK therefore were neither legal or otherwise. -
Twin or single axel caravans 10 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I know that his is a car page but, next year I am hoping to buy a caravan to be towed with my Volvo 940 estate. I am looking at 17? to 18? vans {500, 520, 550s}. Which are the best ? twin or single axel vans. These lengths are available in both forms. Any one any suggestion as to the best 5 berth van circa 1995, {3 small children}. -
Re: Tuningbox 30 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I am considering purchase of similar vehicle but would appreciate the claimed extra bhp/torque for towing. I've checked the web-site and it would appear that the turbo boost/wastegate is not affected. Are there any reliability problems? If a claimed 25% increase can be obtained so simply why are the devices not incorporated by manufacturers as original equipment? -
Highmileage better than low? 17 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Most of my miles were done on the motorway in the first 2-3 years of its life. All my father's miles were done locally except for holidays in France towing a caravan. Is it necessarily a good swap. Both cars are on the original clutch. -
Renault Grand Espace, Ssangyong Tourismo - Renault Grand Espace or Ssangyong Tourismo? 28 Mar 2025 (Forum)
This car will need to tow a light boat, and will also do a lot of miles, with regular trips to the North East of England as well as around 2 trips a year to France/Spain. I have £5k to spend, and both fit nicely into this price range, I just wondered if anyone has any advice or opinions on each, or what else I should look at? -
EV, PHEV or Petrol???? - What to buy next???? 11 Apr 2024 (Forum)
The convertible is summer use mainly and does under 2k miles a year, the hatchback is the runaround, 5k and the SUV when needed...towing 2 ton, using the cargo space, longer trips, maybe 2k a year. The requirement for the SUV has gone. No more towing needed BUT we still like the SUV usability. The ride/height its big and comfy..... -
Volkswagen Golf - 2016 golf engine issues 26 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Then the coil and engine light came on and a warning that oil pressure is low. Had it towed to two different places that said that engine was out of oil for probably days or weeks and when they topped it up, the white smoke from exhaust was too much. Initially they just said that's it's a non runner sc*** and no hope at all. -
New car dilemma 10 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I want something that is good looking, luxurious and has a reasonable degree of practicality about it, hence these cars are at the top of my list. I also need to be able to tow a trailier sometimes. The issue is that both the Merc and the BMW are only available in diesel (the BMW is theoretically available in petrol, but try finding one and the CLS63 AMG is excluded because it is not approved for towing), and I don't do a high mileage, around 100 miles a week to work, hence I am concerned about the dreaded DPF issue and MPG is not really an issue. -
madza 6 2011 - Sumpstrainer failure, 19 Mar 2015 (Forum)
My exhaust started smoking, stopped driving, towed car to mechanics for assessment , result is that the car had a design fault, sumpstrainer blocked causing total engine failure. The car was in mechanics in January for service. This could not have been predicted. -
Nissan Qashqai - Air/Fuel Ration Sensor faulty, what can it lead to 18 Feb 2015 (Forum)
On my way back after 10 miles the car broke down for the same reason and I had to call the recovery. The recovery team had to tow the car to the garage. They asked me to keep the engine running and move it to neutral gear. During the journey to garage which took 45 mins or so, I could feel some jerks as fuel was still going inside the engine (engine being running). -
Vauxhall Signum 2006 1.9 cdti 120 - Seized engine after clutch failure? 31 Mar 2014 (Forum)
He then tried to do the same again and could hear clicking noises - his suggestion is that the battery had gone flat and the starter motor wasn't turning enough. It was towed home, and subsequently towed to the garage. The mechanic has tried to turn the wheels whilst in gear (5th) and the wheels will not turn and is moving the engine. His suggestion is that it has seized. -
Volvo s70 1998 - Can i get some advice from you good folk 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Also, what is classed as "reasonable time" as these companies say, if your car can't be fixed in "reasonable time" by us or a local garage then you will be towed to your choice of destination? For example, say my car break downs, the patrol man can't fix it but he says "dodgy garage" can fix it and you have to pay them labour and parts, if you don't we can't tow you. -
ford mondeo - Another dodgy mondeo tdci, wont start 24 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I just took a 2003 Mondeo tdci, 130bhp model in p/ex. It came as a non runner (kind of) with 2 sets of injectors and 2 HP fuel pumps. the car would tow off and run fairly smooth at low revs, anything over 2500 rpm and it would cut out and need towing / bumping again. Immediate thoughts are fueling issues. I sent both pumps and all injectors to a well respected bosch and delphi diesel specialist. -
Trailer regs puzzle 15 Dec 2009 (Forum)
He says - and I can't see any advantage for him in saying this - that if I buy a trailer weighing 600kg itself but plated to carry 2500kg I cannot drive the 600kg empty trailer home unless I have a vehicle rated for the full 2500kg rather than the 1500kg-rated car I had in mind for the trip home. This was news to me since I had always assumed it was the actual weight being towed that counted and not the potential weight the trailer could carry. I had ultimately thought to tow a trailer and light car having a combined weight of about 1300kg but the most suitable trailer is plated at 2500kg which means only a limited number of 4x4s could be used legally. -
Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 95 1.0 Engine not firing up 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
It started up again not long after, no harm done we thought. Well last night it cut out again and refused to start, it had to be towed home. A friend who knows a fair bit came to have a look before I towed it and seems to think it's the immobiliser or key transponder. I'm not convinced, especially after googling around, because of the symptoms, such as the engine turns and turns but won't start at all (not the "classic" firing up, then cutting out). -
Blue badge abuse. Some serious action. BBC item 18 Sep 2008 (Forum)
However, people had also been caught using fraudulent badges. Currently, wardens only have the powers to tow away the offending vehicles and to issue a fine of £140. However, the city council said it would now start using private prosecutions to bring people to court, which would allow them to impose higher fines and leave the drivers with a criminal record. -
Ford Galaxy (1995 - 2006) - '05 1.9TD. Tyre speed ratings - mix or not to mix? 2 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Our 2005 1.9 Diesel Galaxy was hit at low speed by a motorcylist who was cut up while attempting to switch lanes in slow moving traffic on the M1 last weekend. He managed to lay the bike down and slid under our tow bar which seems to have taken most of the impact. Two questions for the experts out there please: where are we best taking the car to for an inspection to ascertain whether or not there has been any hidden damage to the chassis, tow bar, running gear etc? -
Car has vanished into thin air! 29 Jul 2007 (Forum)
So anyway, last week it finally died and broke down in rather spectacular fashion - lots of smoke and oil pouring out of the engine. This was on Thursday, my dad doesn't have any breakdown cover so on Saturday we went to tow it home. However, when we arrived at the spot where it had been left - it wasn't there! So far we have contacted, Trace, the local council and the police - it's nowhere to be found and the police think it was probably stolen. -
Citroen Dispatch HDi under fueling?? 23 Jun 2006 (Forum)
It feels very down on power compared to 1.9TD models, after adding injector cleaner, or on a long run (often towing) it can get better (will hold 70mph uphill rather than slowing to 55 when towing 1300kg trailer/car combo). Virtually no visible smoke, starts first time every time. Sounds like a bag of nails sometimes until about 3000rpm. -
Espace 2.2 dCi Won't start 6 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The garage I normally use (not a dealer) couldn't get any fault codes on his diagnostic equipment so resorted to towing it to Renault Dealer. They spent a dya on it - no fault codes found - but said at the end there was petrol in , instead of diesel - and charged for that diagnosis. My gargage towed the car back to their place, drained the system and found only diesel in it.
