  Just recently I seem to have run a couple of red lights. The reason was that I had the whole family in the car and there did not seem to be enough time to bring the car to a standstill safely without skidding or throwing them all into their seatbelts in the time allowed for the amber light.

  Have just been to my local Costco (Liverpool) who are running a 20% off Michelins week from the 11th Oct. 4X Pilot Primacy for my Passat (195/65/15V) cost £189 including valve, fitting etc. In addition they gave me a £40 cashback voucher to return to Michelin which brings the total down to £150.

  I have a 2002 1.4 16V clio this is exhibiting all the problems that I have read about elsewhere in this forum which are resolved by replacing the coolant temperature sensor - namely uneven running for the first few minutes when the engine is totally cold, but thereafter all is well until the engine cools down overnight. But - where do I find this sensor - what colour are the leads connected to it?

  I'm not intending to do a lot of mileage (10000 max pa) and most of it urban with the occasional weekend excursion. Having checked consumption rates, insurance and servicing the overall running costs for both the 93 and 95 look to be the same. Are there any (less than obvious) pros/cons in going for the larger car? Many thanks

  Hi i own a small company with 4 employees and need to buy a new pool car. we currently run an astra 2.0 diesel, T reg, but its seen better days and after 200k miles i think its time to go. id like peoples advice, i want to spend about £6000, looking for a hatch or saloon something the size of a golf or passat, diesel and be around 2/3 years old.

  Whilst driving along at a constant speed, the autobox will, out of the blue, change down. This is worrying considering the following traffic nearly runs straight into the back of you! Had it on the computer diagnostic, and it said speed sensor and multifunction switch. Changed them, and nearly 80 quid later, I've still got the problem! The fault is intermittent, and the car has only done 40k, so I'm confused as what to do next!

  I return to this subject without apology. I know that a senior detective is critically ill after what appears to be a hit and run accident yesterday- I sincerely hope he survives and my sympathy goes to his family BUT ..... Was it really necessary for Scotland Yard to close the whole of the M11 from the M25 junction to the North Circular for 12 hours to investigate a crime which at worst is probably a case of reckless driving and if it was necessary ,why not close it from junction 5 at Loughton rather than M25 junction 6.
• Changing coolant - astra 1.6i M reg 26 May 2004 (Forum)
  The manual says it should take 6 litres but I could only get three in and I'm worried that my poor little astra is now running around with not enough. Does anyone know the actual coolant capacity? Have I done something wrong?? I've got to travel with it soon so I'd really appreciate any ideas anyone has. :) Thanks, Salm

  As I am currently doing only 5000 miles a year I am thinking of chopping in my Mondeo for something smaller/cheaper to run, the above model seems the most suitable considering my budget (the part ex value of my Mondeo, around £2k.) Any owners with opinions out there? Yes I know it will take a fortnight to get to 60mph but as I spent most of my limited miles in 30 zones this does not worry me, and I'm sick of getting sub 25mpg out of my car!

  When starting from cold, theres a noise from the engine compartment, sounds like a pump, quite noisy, runs for about a minute or so, only from cold, doesn't do it from subsequent restarts. Also the radiator fan comes on rather more than i thought it should, even when the engine doesn't seem to be particularly hot.

  The revs seem to pulse almost as if there is a pump or something under duress. When the engine has been running for a bit it is fine. Also when revving the engine in the drive I have noticed a slight bang/pop sound that comes from the air-filter area just when the revs return to idle speed. I don't know whether this is just the exhaust breather system doing what it should do.

  If it was a petrol engine it would be like one of the spark plugs is not firing - obviously it's not that! It's not noticeable under 'hard' acceleration (I use the term loosely) but when running in third or fourth within the band under gentler acceleration. Only clue I have so far is maybe fuel boost (?) problem but complete a complete no-hoper with technical matters am a bit stuck. I've cleaned the air filter and checked all hoses for cracks, etc.

  I'm about to start looking at a replacement for the 8yr old Audi and at face value it looks like just what I need to help me decide between sticking with older prestige models that although the depreciation is much lower, run the risk of a big repair bill (as I've just had with the Audi) or putting my motoring budget more towards funding depreciation on a much newer used car but having the protection of a car still with a good chunk of warranty and lower probability of hefty repairs.
• Rover620 Expansion tank keeps boiling up 27 Mar 2004 (Forum)
  Do i have an Head Gasket problem? Before i changed top hose engine seemed to run better when expansion tank empty and less water in engine? 620si Auto (Honda Engine) was losing a litre of water about every 2 weeks (found small crack in top hose, have replaced). Now as soon as engine gets warm expansion tank boils spurting steam and water up into the air.

  My Dad is on about getting a cheap run-around to leave at his place in France. Thing is though the car would be stood still in the barn for up to 6 months at times over the winter, and I don't think this is particulaly healthy for any car, if indeed it will start at all.
• Shiny new socket set 14 Mar 2004 (Forum)
  I'm looking for a nice new shiny socket set (last one having been nicked with the car...) of decent quality, in a tidy box, metric only (I'm not planning ever to run a P6). Probably with a range of screwdriver/allen key/star ends as well. I don't want (need) a truly properly seriously professional set costing hundreds. What do you recommend - and indeed - where from?
• VW Scirocco and right hand corners 5 Feb 2004 (Forum)
  I've got a H reg 1990 VW Scirocco GTII (carb model) which seems to be having a problem with RH turns! In a straight line or round left hand corners it runs well but everytime I turn right (at a roundabout for instance) as I press the accelerator to leave to roundabout the car stutters / loses power. A fraction of a second later, when the car is going in a straight line again it will quite happily accelerate away.

  We were unfortunate enough to be run into the back of tonight by a young lad on a scooter. Fortunately he was basically ok, and insured properly. As far as I can see we now have two options regarding getting the damage repaired - getting a dent out of the tailgate and probably a respray of that and the rear bumper.
• Another punto head gasket 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
  I have been going through about a lire of oil every 800-1000 miles, and Havr recently noticed that my coolant level has dropped, COuld this be a head gasket problem? There is no white gunk around the oil or coolant caps, but it does get a decent motorway run (150 miles) most weekends. The car is a Y reg Punto MK2 1.2 8v and has covered 24000 miles. ANy help appreciated. Cheers Ross

  Regularly check my levels every week my coolant is up to the max level at the mo. drips for about 5 min then stops could this be just overflow running off from the radiator or something else. First major thing i have noticed after nearly 2 yrs motoring. Def coolant cos of the colour
