My (new shape) Mondeo has an uneven tickover shortly after starting (waiting in traffic for instance). The revs seem to pulse almost as if there is a pump or something under duress. When the engine has been running for a bit it is fine. Also when revving the engine in the drive I have noticed a slight bang/pop sound that comes from the air-filter area just when the revs return to idle speed. I don't know whether this is just the exhaust breather system doing what it should do. There is no noticable change in fuel consumption or anything.

the mk2 mondy had a pulse air system for the exhaust and at low temps or after start up it would allow air to be drawn into the exhaust manifold to help with low temp running. i know that if this (or various other bits of the emmission control systems) goes wrong you pretty well get the systems that you say you have and all it takes is one faulty solenoid or a split rubber pipe and you can get all sorts of strange uneven running problems.
