Pros? Cons? Tips about some of the additional features?
  • Perception of quality - Standing the test of time 27 Aug 2007 (Forum)
"Posh trim is more to do with vanity than real quality, a bit of niceness you?d like to surround yourself with. And it?s so easy to fall for. The only real test of build quality is time." This is part of an interesting article in Car on trying to differentiate between the so called perceived quality that you touch versus the real quality of car that stands the test of time in terms of reliability and durability.
  • Road congestion...who's fault?? 3 Aug 2007 (Forum)
was talking at work the other day... in the 70's when the golf 1st came, it was X inchs long...in the 80's when mkII came out it was X inchs longers in the 21st century, the golf is now X+X+X+X inchs longer(they get bigger each time) so if this trend is consistent with each car...which it is...
  • Audi A6 flat battery error 13 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Audi A6 1.8T 98 R plate AEB 20 valve engine 40,800 miles. I have been keeping this car down south at my MinL?s and on a recent visit the battery was completely fault ( five years old ) I charged the battery and eventually it fired up with no errors but the battery would not hold it?s charge so popped into a local garage and had a new battery Exide 096 fitted.
  • Peugot 405TD Brakes 18 Nov 2006 (Forum)
This is all that needs sorting now for the free restest! Also, could anyone tell me which model of car would use the same ABS unit? I know a lot of 405's used it. Maybe early 406's/Xantia's?
  • Everyone's Favourite - Car Insurance 2 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Or, I?m guessing, if I don?t take them up on this offer and my answer of ?it?s just the standard on fitted by the manufacturer? doesn?t satisfy them then my premium will increase. Probably by around £35. When I completed the online form I?m sure I?ve indicated ?Standard Equipment?
  • Failed Hydraulic Tappet ? (Polo) 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Am I right in thinking that it's a relatively straightforward job on this unit? Also, if its only one tappet that?s shot, can you replace just one and in any case, how long do you think it would take an experienced garage to do (then I can work out the cost). Sorry for all the questions (1043cc 1993 Polo)
  • 2k to spend C220, Audi 80, Avensis 15 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Avensis, reliabilty and I was thinking the lean burn engine, what year do these finish and the VVTi?s start, I am aware of the engine problem on the VVTi?s, any bigger probs on the lean burn ones. I seem to remember issues with front brakes. I?ve read the CbyC breakdowns, nothing too onerous for any of the above, opinions please.
  • Toyota MK 1 MR2 Quarrelling wipers 17 Sep 2005 (Forum)
) Unfortunately the main dealers want £123 for a replacement which effectively makes the car a write-off; I have therefore obtained a complete S/H linkage from 24/7 online breakers and this is the sticking point; I suspect if I prise the connecting rod off my S/H linkage, the middle-aged plastic bush will become instantly geriatic and fit as well as the one I currently have, I therefore would like to fit the complete linkage.
  • Should I change my auto box oil? 19 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Should I get it changed, if so would it be expensive and what if I don't? P.S. For those of you who followed my tyres thread, the car alas has 4 Pirelli P6000's shodding it's 4 corners. I haven't tried it yet other than a few hundred yards back to work on side streets, but already I feel that there's an improvement in tyre noise. By the way the new fronts are P6000's, I notice the rears are P6000 powergy, is there much difference?
  • Greetings from the South ... 4 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The boys-in-blue have really earned their Xmas bonusses this year, as we have seen a proliferation of S**** C*****s on national roads, catching blokes doing 130 in a 120 zone... as unroadworthy and overloaded taxis, busses, trucks trundle by. The death of the 8 British tourists in a minibus crash, will have made the media in UK ... apparently Mr Nutter was playing 'chicken' with cars all afternoon.
  • Omega!! ! 12 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Yep its been a while now since I\'ve posted about my lovely omega, but just wanted to say that she\'s still going strong without any probs or hassle since I purchased it with 89K on the clock last June. It was left in a long stay car park for 3 weeks in sub zero conditions at the airport during Xmas and started straight away when I got back!

Skoda Fabia 1.4 Classic Auto. (All above same engine and box, I have heard there have been problems with the above) Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Auto Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8v Auto My current favourite is the new Daihatsu Charade 1.0 EL Automatic, £6700.
  • Millers Oil analysis of oil sample 27 Nov 2024 (Forum)
Wheeler Dealers bought a Jaguar S type V8 with 200k miles and sent an oil sample off to Millers to find if the engine was in good shape. High levels of sulphur was detected which indicated coolant loss, possibly down to head gasket failure.

Two blokes I know do nothing to their cars, zilch, nada, a Mazda Mx5 20 years old and a Jag S type pretty old. Jag cost about £800 and has merrily gone on for two years or so. Jag guy just runs them til they break and buys another, how they don't just stop running I don't know.
  • Japanese metals manufacturer - Dodgy metal in cars 17 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Didn't there used to be something about this in early korean and chinese production, but if i remember well, Rover SD1's  and VX Cavaliers and others on that platform all had dodgy bulkhead/firewalls.   http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/markets/article-4971298/Japan-steel-scandal-hit-UK-based-Honda-Mazda.html
