  Right, I am about to by an XC90 D5. I was going to purchase the 2005 model as it's a little cheaper. However I understand that from '06 onwards a better D5 engine was used (185bhp). I hear that this got rid of the delay through the engine/transmission that can sometimes develop under harsh acceleration.

  All this stuff about Volvo promoting that 'no-one in the UK has ever been killed in an XC90' is just their attempt to cover off the publicity around Uber using an XC90 during their autonomous vehicle trials in America and killing the cyclist. I'm confident in your mantras on most things, but I'm not comfortable with you supporting Volvo in this particular PR message.

Honda CRV 2.2 Ex Auto (2010) - £26,500k - best broker price Volvo XC90 Auto Active - £26k after leather re-trim and a few options added. Having driven both, the Honda feels slightly more modern inside albeit the build quality doesn't feel quite as good as the XC90. On the handling front, they both feel similar (i.e. numb steering, zero road feel, the sense that the car is going to topple over if you take a bend at any more than 25 mph!).

  For those fortunate enough to be buying a new car, what are typical delays for a new car built to order, ie not in stock at a dealer? I'm a bit puzzled for instance that for a Volvo XC90, local dealer is quoting about 9 months yet Autocar, What Car and Auto Express all have one as a long-term test vehicle, and Volvo are still avertising the XC90 quite heavily. Same sort of position with BMW X5, dealer again quoting about 9 months for delivery but there is extensive advertising....and should the marketing bods responsible for these cars get the chop for getting the production versus sales demand figures so far out?

  Just booked my Volvo XC90 in for it's first service, 3k or 3 month job. Turns out it's not a service as such, just a look over. I'm told the first time it gets a 'proper' service is 12k or a year. Is this the norm these days, and if so can it be good for a new engine to run 12k on the factory oil?
