  • Renault Espace (1997 - 2002) - Opinions please 3.0 v6 auto 17 Aug 2008 (Forum)
hi, my older sister with soon to be 4 kids is looking at replacing her '04 renault megane with something suitable. she's found a 3.0 v6 auto grand espace on a y reg with 88k for 3.5k. she's looking at keeping it for 5 years at an average of 12k a year so i assume it should reach 150k in one piece. work will be picking up the fuel bill fortunately for her but just wanted an opinion on what you guys think of these? what other options are there for 2 aults, 4 kids and 2 pushchairs around a similer budget, she had mentioned chrysler voyagers any opinions there?

  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2002 1.9 HDi turbo failure 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
My mechanic thinks it's the Mass Air Filter, but reading various forums on the tinternet I'm not so sure - some threads suggest the high pressure fuel rail. I need to get this sorted before I take the Pug back to it's native France for a two week holiday next week. Any ideas?

Hi I am half considering buying smart car...fuel costs and low tax as well as environmental benefits, Im not convinced it makes huge sense to swap at the moment but can anyone give me their views I would be part exing a ford ka, 2006 (06plate) basic spec/entry model 1.3, bought from new with full service history, current milage 9500 considering a 2004 Smart FORTWO 0.7 SEMIAUTO with 41,000 miles on clock, on ebay at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 130 tdci - flat spots 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I have 52 plate 130 bhp tdci with 28,000 miles on the clock.i first took my car back to the dealer when the car had only a couple of thousand miles on the clock. at around 1,800 rpm in top gear the car would judder (missing)this happened infrequently. The dealer remapped the ecu and checked the fuel filter.Itook the car back on three occasions but basically nothing happened. Now two years on the problem has only got worse.still at the same rev range but more frequent and also in other gears.Has anyone had the same problem and had any success in resolving it
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1996 1.2 8V - temp gauge occasionally gets too hot 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
keeps the needle in the safe section of the gauge, but still about the 95 that is normal in cooler weather. No loss/use of cooling fluid, no pressurisation of coolant, no mayo, oil OK. Fuel consumption seems fine. Any thoughts? Noticed the rad was cooler at base than at top on one such occasion.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - TDCi 2004: strange noise when accelerating 8 Jun 2008 (Forum)
However to do this means that I can only use 4th gear at 40mph , 5th gear at 60mph and 6th gear at 70mph The noise sounds like a vibration but it may be something else. There is also a smell of unburnt fuel. I do not know if this is connected to the noise problem or something separate. Any suggestions what the likely problem is?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.9 LUCAS-CAV stop solenoid u/s in XUD9 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I have tried another solenoid to no affect. The spring and plunger inside both seem OK. When I prime the pump fuel seems to go past the solenoid with ignition turned on. But it wont start. I am wondering if the high pressure pump in the injector pump is weak. Anyone know of a link to LUCAS CAV pump technical info thanks?
  • Storing waste heat from a car to use in the house? 27 May 2008 (Forum)
My cunning plan involves using the waste engine heat to warm a medium in a tank - perhaps a saline solution, which on return home is then plugged into the hot water circuit of the domestic plumbing and has the heat extracted from it. Clearly the issues include: safety, cost/return on investment, weight (and fuel penalty) as well as the space taken up, and a host of others I've yet to think of. Anyone care to think about it and provide a serious critique?
  • Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 1998 2.0 stalled now wont start error p1631 14 May 2008 (Forum)
    The car stalled and has not started since although it does fire. The error code is p1631. A mechanic has said that the fuel injection pump and control module need replacing but another has said it could be loose wiring. Has anyone any idea how i can check which it is without spending money on parts i might not need? thanks {I think you meant 1998, not 7998}

  • M6 Toll - worth it @ 09:30 - 10:00 am Saturday? 9 Mar 2008 (Forum)
When I get to Birmingham way at about 9-10am, I can either go M42 north & M6, or M42 north M6 toll. Without expecting a crystal ball, is it usually bisy at that sort of time? With a £150 fuel bill for the round trip due to my very economical car, I'd rather not spunk another 5er if it would only make a few mins difference to the journey...
  • Plug-in cars could actually increase air pollution 29 Feb 2008 (Forum)
That's because a plug-in's lower tailpipe emissions may be offset by smokestack emissions from the utility generating plants supplying electricity to recharge the big batteries that allow plug-ins to run up to 40 miles without kicking on their gasoline engines. Plug-ins, called PHEVs, are partly powered, in effect, by the fuel used to generate the electricity. The rest of the USATODAY news item: http://tinyurl.com/yss7cr Another example of not looking at the whole package?
  • MPG ready reckoner? 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Hello, I need to change my car - I want a big diesel with plenty of luggage space and power enough to tow a caravan. Does anyone know of an easy way of working out annual fuel costs based on average mpg? I want to work out how much, say, a Nissan X-Trail would cost per year in diesel compared with a big estate like a Ford Mondeo. I would be upgrading from a Ford Focus diesel estate so I know everything will be more expensive on either car (though insurance and purchase price of either would be v similar - just more tax on the XT) Thanks in advance....
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1998 1.5 diesel intermittent non start. 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I have a problem, my 1.5 diesel S reg, starts most times. But sometimes It just turns over but does not fire, like the fuel cut off soleniod is stuck. Been reading various links on this subject. I have found the relay in front of the alternator, not sure if this is where the prob is. or how to un-plug it to check the condition of the connection.
  • Subaru Forester II (2002 - ) - 2004 2.0 - Cannot sell it...overpriced or what? 21 Jan 2008 (Forum)
He is now looking for offers around £6k, maybe a little less. Can anyone tell me if it is overpriced, or have the recent fuel price hikes severely damaged the residual values of this marque. Similar cars on Autotrader are listed at well over his asking price.

  • some tyre questions 27 Nov 2007 (Forum)
    2) What effect does tread wear have on tyre noise - i.e. will a new tyre be quieter or noisier than one worn down to 2mm? 3) What effect does tread wear have rolling resistance - i.e. will I get better fuel economy from a new tyre or one that is worn down to 2mm? 4) How badly worn do winter tyres have to be before they are worse in snow than summer tyres - e.g. would a winter tyre with 2 mm of tread be better or worse in snow than a summer tyre with 6 mm of tread?
