I didnt check my partners car before i started i and he had parked it in gear. The car stalled and has not started since although it does fire. The error code is p1631. A mechanic has said that the fuel injection pump and control module need replacing but another has said it could be loose wiring. Has anyone any idea how i can check which it is without spending money on parts i might not need? thanks
{I think you meant 1998, not 7998}

That's a nasty code on one of these; it comes in several flavours, so getting it read with a dealer-level tool will reveal the exact failure from the additional sub-codes.
A high proportion of the time that you see any variant of P1631 it ends up needing a new pump. That's around £1700 at the dealers; or £900 for a re-con.
Given the circumstances of the fault; a thorough check of the wiring, fuses, relays and earths is worth the cost. Comparing the pump-speed data with the engine speed reading can also be useful.

thanks for the reply - will ask mechanic if he got sub codes. How would i get the pump speed data?
thanks again

The pump rotor speed is only one of many parameters displayed by a scanner's live-data.
Codes are only the beginning of diagnosis; analysis - and comprehension - of the live-data is the crucial part.

live data will give you pump speed, i am working on one of these at moment just pushed it in before coming home had same code usually means the pump is fubarred,so yu are not alone

not good news for the one at work, i condemmed the pump, £1663 +vat just for the pump, local diesel shop do a service exchange unit for £900 plus fitting, there is a guy on a well known internet site that sells them for about £500 but do not know what warranty you would get

i have been told the sub-code is that it is the third part. Is this consistent with pump failure requiring replacement?
Thanks for your time

sorry bit confused, if you have the code post it, and any description, and will go from there

sorry for the confusion - a friend with a diagnostic kit had a look while i am waiting for the mechanic to do the work. The friend told me the error coming up was P1631 third part. I asked what the subcode was and he said "third part". Is this not a subcode? Thanks
|
|
no is the answer, i fitted a non genuine pump (service exchange) today to the one that i mention in ealier post and cured the fault, the diagnostic equipment should give a code p1631, a description critical malfuntion, and sometimes a sympton byte which is a code purely for tech's 21 short to ground

My best guess at "third part" would be P1631 [3] - Comms error between IP control unit and engine ECU??
It's going to depend on what read it, to a large degree.

cheers for all replies - was a snap on that read it

I wasn't aware that a red brick could display sub-codes on one this early. They're normally very basic.
It's ones like Tech 2 and Vaux-Com that will nail the exact failure down.
