The luxurious Jaguar XJ, Vauxhall Frontera, Volvo V70 and Renault Laguna completed the inauspicious bottom ten. Based on the study sample, thirty percent of cars will breakdown during the course of a year, leaving owners having to fork out an average repair bill of £310.66.

    Whether it’s the Minis from The Italian Job or the Mk2 Jaguar from The Sweeney, the bad guys always seemed to get the best cars. Well, that was until DCI Gene Hunt got the keys to an Audi Quattro in Ashes to Ashes. Now Philip Glenister, who played the throwback cop in the hit BBC series, is to bring together some of the best villians' vehicles at next year’s London Classic Car show.

    Elsewhere in the auction, a trio of Horch classics from the 1930s. Founded in 1904, Horch is one of the ancestors of the present Audi company. In its short lifetime, the company produced several notable motor cars, three of which achieved strong prices in the auction room. The 1937 Horch 853 Spezial Roadster sold for €1,035,000 (£872,291), while both the 1938 Horch 853 A Sport Cabriolet and the 1934 Horch 780 B Cabriolet realized €632,500 (£532,944).

    .  On the rally circuits of the world, the Integrale was already proving to be a massive success, explained Lancia in this ad from 1987: ‘No other car has ever demonstrated such conclusive proof of endurance, reliability, exhilarating performance and handling over such distances in the most extreme and testing conditions’. It may have been the original Audi Quattro that introduced the world to the notion of an all-wheel drive rally winner with masses of turbocharged power, but Lancia’s Delta Integrale arguably perfected the art. It became one of the ultimate icons of the ’80s, outgunning everything else in the rally world at the time.

    EurotaxGlass's predicted the vehicle will hang onto 18 per cent more of its list price after 12 months than the equivalent Audi car. It suggested the model would still be worth about nine per cent more than its rival after three years on the road. Commenting on the reasons behind this, head of market intelligence Jason King said: "A striking new look, luxurious and modern interiors and much improved build quality have all helped to make the XF one of last year's best sellers.

    One of the company's dealers reported a customer had traded in a Jaguar XJ-S in favour of a new i10. Meanwhile, other retailers revealed they had taken Mercedes, BMWs and Audis off buyers' hands. According to Mr Whitehorn, some people seem a little embarrassed about the state of the car they are trading in. However, he pointed out Hyundai will accept any vehicle - as long as it meets the government's criteria.
