  • Citroen C3 (2002 - 2009) - 2002 1.4 diesel - needs priming before starting. 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The problem is the car wont start unless you prime some kind of pump by the side of the engine, once this is carried out for a few mins the car will start and run all day. If the car is left sometimes it can be a day or two the same problem happens again.. Any answers would be appreciated.
  • What purpose a transmission tunnel? 15 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Why do front wheel drive cars need a transmission tunnel in the rear especially? There is no drive shaft. The exhaust does not run through it. Neither do electrics. And the bit of small-bore pipework that does, does not need a semi-circular cavity of 6 or 8 inches across! Perhaps it adds rigidity to the floorpan. But it certainly adds to the design complexity for the floorpan and the interior design.
  • The end of year (misc. provisions) thread 1 Jan 2008 (Forum)
It seems that it would be remiss of me not to express my appreciation - so, thanks to all backroomers whose posts have entertained, informed, and helped me. In particular, thanks to HJ for providing us with the site, to Stephen for keeping it running smoothly, to Dynamic Dave, PoloGirl, Pugugly, and Smokie for their moderating labours, and to Martin Devon who went out of his way to give me the benefit of his wisdom in response to one of my questions.

  • How much has the fuel increase cost you? 16 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I get through about 40 litres a week so thats £4.00. extra. A month thats £16.00, so a year thats almost £200.00. With two cars running at about the same mileage thats £400. If you are loaded its nothing but what does it do to a family on an average income bringing up youngsters? Brings to mind straws and camel's backs.................
  • Queued up 'cos fuel went up to 50p a gallon! 10 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know if fuel is actually dearer now as a percentage of average income than when it went up to 50p a gallon in the early seventies. I was in the army in Blandford running a Viva HB and earning I suppose not much more than £30 a week. I remember the car cost me £400 odd second hand. Can't remember how much tax and insurance was though. So are we paying more percentage wise or not for motoring now?

I have a Pug 406 110 hdi on a T plate, I have been told that i have to have my new ecu recoded to the car, the car run`s ok, but i cannot erase the fault code`s (p0230_p0380) . also another quickie question, would a ecu from a hdi-90 work ok on a hdi-110. as the only difference i could see is the inter-cooler side of it.
  • Brackley to Maidenhead commute 11 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Due to a change in circumstance, I am considering moving to Brackley (Northants), and commuting (by car) to Maidenhead each day. My route would be the most obvious A43, M40, A404. Off peak this is an easy 45/50 minute run. However does anyone have any experience doing this journey at 7am and return journey at 5pm? Don't really want to spend more than an hour in the car in each way. Is this achievable on an 'average' day?
  • What plugs for Passat 1.8 20V ADR ? 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
AS it is now due for a major service anyway I want to change plugs before changing anything else. Currently running Bosch Super 4 (FR78X I think), but have been told that these are prone to causing mis-fire as some can fail early (?). Does anyone have experience of this and what other plugs (NGK Model?) are recommended for the non turbo 1.8 20V Passat
  • 2 litre VW engine uses oil 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
The petrol engine on my 5 1/2 year old Passat uses about 1ltr of oil every 2 to 3 months. I do about 8.000 miles a year, mostly 7 mile runs to work. The car has covered just over 40,000 miles now and has always been serviced at a VW dealer. Is this normal? Prior to the Passat I had a 15 year old 1.3 petrol Golf with 60,000 miles on the clock that never used a drop.
  • Read on, MkV Golf owners 8 Jul 2007 (Forum)
While he was in, I had asked them to look at a slight stutter on accelerating, mainly through second gear. Apparently there is an ECU update for the tdi, to correct what they called 'rough running'. This has now been done to my car, and it's like driving a totally different car! It's much smoother, and much quieter. I wouldn't have believed one small tweak to a computer could make such a difference, but I definitely love Gunther again now!
  • Golf Mk4 problem starting when warm 24 Jun 2007 (Forum)
My 1.6 MkIV Golf starts perfectly when cold but is very difficult to start when warm. After a run it needs to be left about half an hour or more before it starts easily again. Once started when warm it idles smoothly and drives normally. I guess it may be a sensor that needs replacing but not sure which one to replace first.
  • 2002 Punto 1.2 - EOBD light on. 12 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have a 2002 petrol 1.2 petrol Punto which is showing a "EOBD System Engine Contol System" warning light and feel likes its running on two cylinders. Taken it to local garage, who failed to find fault ( Tried new coil, they think it's electrical). Do I have any options other than taking it to a Fiat dealership ? Thanks for any help.
