Googled a few things and bad battery was one suggestion, we got one and the same stuff is still happening. So if you leave it first gear and it happens to shut off lights stay dimly lit up on the dash..if you shut it off with the ebrake the lights on the dash go out but the pump comes on. -

If it is the case then it knocks about £500 off a 'normal' cars first 3 years costs. Then they quote £70 a month to rent the battery, but that's for a nominal 6K miles a year. Mrs SDA's car does 7.5K miles a year regular as electronic clockwork. Nowehere does it say what different levels of battery mileage will cost, for all I know anything over 6K per year might cost double or more, or indeed the same. -

The engine refuses to crank on the starter motor, although the panel lights go out, the interior light dims and the battery voltage dips to about 10 volts. No obvious solenoid "Clack" is audible. Removing the solenoid connection (spade terminal) from the starter & connecting the voltmeter to it - you get 12 volts when the starter key is turned. -
