Renault Zoe - Renault Zoe - Steamdrivenandy

HJ's piece about the Zoe and its pricing got me thinking. There's a possibility that it could be a useful replacement for Mrs SDAs Yaris Verso auto.

The pricing looks good at around £14K and from the Renault website I think that includes 4 years servicing and warranty. BTW the Renault Zoe website is more style than substance, that's why I say 'I think'. If it is the case then it knocks about £500 off a 'normal' cars first 3 years costs.

Then they quote £70 a month to rent the battery, but that's for a nominal 6K miles a year. Mrs SDA's car does 7.5K miles a year regular as electronic clockwork. Nowehere does it say what different levels of battery mileage will cost, for all I know anything over 6K per year might cost double or more, or indeed the same. All the website says is that it's flexible.

Then there's the electricity to charge the thing, there's no mention of what that might cost, although if you charge at home it'll presumably get lost in your utility bill. There's also no mention of what remote charging at other sites will cost, presuming you can find one.

Then there's the wall socket which the website says can be installed by British Gas. Is that included in the car's price or is it extra and if so how much does it cost. They also say it can be installed 'in your garage', does this mean it can't be mounted outside?

Then there's colours. There's absolutely no mention of exterior body colour options and the only examples shown are white. Is this car going to be the negative to the original Mr Fords positive 'black only' policy?

I have discovered that it has a decent size boot for its size but that was from HJ not Renault and there are no pics of the boot anywhere to see whether it has a low lip and a level floor.

And lastly and probably most importantly, has anyone had a stab at an RV for the Zoe? After all its fine for it to be priced close to competitors, but if after 3 years it's only worth £2K then it's toast. And no puns about muffins, electric toasters or gas grills please.

I'd be amazed if the thing is reliable, judging by feedback on renaults on this and other forums. According to most owners renault can't even make an electric window go up and down, never mind make a complete electric vehicle!

I'm a renault sceptic.

Comments about Renault reliability should dry up soon. Since the current Megane came out, their reliability, and overall build quality, has improved dramatically. Warranty Direct places the current Scenic as it's 5th most reliable car. The current Megane is steadily building a good reputation too.

If I was in the market for new supermini, the new Clio would be my pick. Brilliant looking car with obvious character. That will keep Renault buoyant for many years yet I predict.

I'm a Renault sceptic too Ols, having spent a few years working in contract hire vehicle management our maintenance guys gave them and Fiat the worst marks every time. With such bad reps I don't know how either actually manages to sell any cars.

However Mrs SDA had two automatic Clios and an auto Renault 5 in the 80's/90's and they seemed to survive OK, apart from when she tangled with a John Deere tractor on a North Yorkshire country lane, but that's another story.

Quite honestly I haven't looked at a Renault for a decade at least and wouldn't even know what the current Megane looks like. However the Zoe has caught my imagination and there seems to be a lot less to go wrong on an electric car than on an internal combustion one.

Has anyone got any answers to the questions in my original post?

HJ's piece about the Zoe and its pricing got me thinking.

I don't think it is actually an HJ piece - it sounds like it's straight from the Renault PR dept.

Can you imagine HJ writing this piece of florid prose?

"Its agile, dynamic looks express driving enjoyment, ...Like Twingo and Twizy, ZOE features the Renault brand’s new design identity. "

Twingo, Twizy and Zoe? What happended to LaLa and Po?

You're quite right CF, a lot of what is in the reviews is a straight take from PR dep'ts.

Apparently Zoe comes from ZE (Zero Emmissions), Renault liberally scatter the initials about their website etc. Personally I'm looking forward to the BMW Pontypine!

The title 'Renault Zoe' gave me a flashback.

I get that feeling about a lot of the "reviews" on this site these days.

You need to distinguish between the car-by-car reviews, which are started when a car is announced and are there to give information (some of which inevitably comes from the manufacturer's press pack) and the road tests, which are the result of HJ or one of his team actually driving the car.
