• Mondeo tdci 130 Ghia estate 2003 Euro 3 - Mondeo tdci not coming on boost., 7 Apr 2013 (Forum)
  New exhaust system including cat. No fault codes, no flashing glow plug light and no error codes. The car runs sweet but lacks the sizzle it used to have when you ask it perform. I get a rumbling sound which I thought was exhaust when you squeeze the throttle and at the point where the turbo starts to kick in.

    Needless to say the main dealers are not very interested or seemingly knowledgeable. To them the car runs OK and as long as it is driveable they are happy to see the car leave the garage. But poor performance at these revs is actually potentially dangerous - I have to change down to overtake on the flat, and avoid overtaking going up hills.

  New member here, just joined and have a question for those in the know. For the last month or so I have had a misfire/rough running problem from cold. Traction control light (yellow triangle in yellow circle) comes on after depressing the loud pedal literally moments after setting off. After engine is warmed up (5 miles approx) the light will go out and engine will run fine if the car is turned off and then on again .

  Despite loving this car (it's my wifes) I am now rather angry at the ongoing costs of running the vehicle - so much so that I will not be buying another Mazda. I have written to Mazda and informed them of this - Brick Wall here !!!  So let me inform all who may be looking at purchasing this model.

  Hi there, I have an F reg Rascal van. I haven't used the van much since I bought it, but on a recent long motorway run (about an hour into the journey) the van started to stutter / hesitate when accelerating through the gears, from about 1000 rpm upwards in all gears. Once cruising at about 50 mph in 5th it runs fine and doesn't seem to lack power, but as soon as the speed drops the engine stutters when accelerating back up to top speed.

  Checked earth connection at compressor clutch, no earth but by giving it a false earth he could get it to run. Consequently concluded likely to be safety switch through which the clutch gets its earth. (High pressure?) Part cost approx £80. Switch fitted, aircon ran but stopped after a few minutes. Disconnected/reconnected battery to try if that may re-set the system, aircon ran then stopped as above.

  I recently had the check engine light come on flashing and the engine running rough.  I drove home, about 30 miles then put the car into a local independent garage.  A faulty coil pack was diagnosed, using a computer hooked up to the car, and replaced.  The car is now running well but the check engine light is now on steady at all times when the ignition is on.

  I am a very happy guy because it cost me nothing, and I got new dampers on the rear as well. Pulrose Motors in Pwlhelli did the work and they were awesome. All the new running gear was painted over in protectant and they also did the rest of the running gear up front as well. They gave me a "loaner" for a couple of days and all in all they were just terrific. Just wanted to share.

  The problem is, when I start the car, and the temperature is about 12 degrees C, then the car runs perfectly, when the outside temperature is about 7 degrees C and lower or 15 degrees C and higher, then the car has problems idling when coming off a load, such as when you come to a corner or intersection, (depress clutch, and foot of petrol), then the engine stalls.

  This didn't work and it was running in limp mode. He got advice that the DPF may be blocked due to the amount of oil that had been making its way into the exhaust system from the failed turbo, so soaked it overnight which he was advised should cure the problem.

  Then, a bit later, after the engine has warmed up (but not as soon as it's warm) the problem clears itself and it runs normally. It first misfired in May and I was told it needed new HT leads (which I had done straight away), plus the plugs were cleaned and checked. It behaved itself after that until a few weeks ago when this intermittent misfiring problem started again.

  I then replaced the fuel filter a week ago and we have done about 100 miles since with no problem so i was hoping this might be the cause however whilst my wife was doing the school run today it happened again and she managed to limp it home. now its really difficult to start and you need to floor the throttle - if it starts it will run absolutley fine for about 3 seconds then start to chugg, refuse to rev and produce the smoke again with the engine stopping after a few seconds. there is lots of grey soot on the floor by the tailpie so i think its getting the fuel ok.

  I'm going round in circles trying to decide between these two cars and wondered if anyone here could offer some insight. I'm looking for a cheap to run small family car for me and my wife and two kids, 10 and 12yrs. We do about 16k miles/year, a lot of it in built up areas, commuting to work. We have up to £8.5k to spend at a push but would rather spend £6k.

  My budget is £6000 and I am looking for a bit of poke and a reasonable amount of reliability/reasonable running costs. I will be doing around 35k miles a year so am looking for a lower mileage car - not for residual value purposes, just because there is the potential for less to go wrong (and I do mean potential, I'm not making any assumptions).
• Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 2.0 GTI - head gasket failure pending? 24 Nov 2009 (Forum)
  Engine in question is the 8v AGG - about 80k miles. 1) Oil residue in the air box - despite cleaning 2) Oil being blown out of the oil filler cap 3) "Blowing" noise from the airbox when there is any load on the engine. Exhaust has been checked twice and is 100% ok. 4) Gurgling / running fluids sound when the oil cap is removed when the engine is running. By this I don't mean the puff-puff-puff sounds of the compression cycle. Sounds like air is blowing through fluid (oil!?). 5) Possibly a very slight water loss - but this could be a minor radiator leak - so not so worried about this one 6) Lumpy idle 7) Its very hard to drive smoothly when hot and in traffic - i.e. start stop - low RPM.

  we're now down to 1 reliable income, plus what i bring in as a consultant, so need something reliable with low running costs, that will fit a large lab-size dog in the boot & 4 people. However other concern is that we're moving to the peak district next year, probably to a village. In the winter we wonder if we could do with 4x4 for those early starts on unsalted country roads.

  Have an 11K mileage/March '09 car which - since a I got secondhand from the dealer in July - has had occasional fan running-type noise after engine switch off, usually after short journeys and can run for anything up to 5 mins. Sometimes (at least) this has been accompanied by blue-ish smoke (which one assumes as oil) coming from the engine compartment, normally escaping via the front wheel arches.
