Non-start update 10 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Original posting: Non-start Author: Roger K. (---.cache.pol.co.uk) Date: 05-12-01 21:13 I had a car die on me recently: all ignition circuits were dead and no ignition light. Lights and hazards working and central locking. I checked fuses and fusible links and looked for loose connections. After about an hour, the warning lights came on and the car started and ran normally. -
Xantia - Purchase in mind 16 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Dear all I am looking at purchasing a Xantia as a second car. (Big smiles on DW's face). I will be using it to drive to and from work every day and the occassional load moving session. Can anyone advise me on what to look out for, which spec is best (I've taken a good look at the cbc breakdown and taken that into account). -
BMW 323i Air con broken down 2000 reg 24 Jun 2004 (Forum)
If that is wear and tear, then what is a breakdown? Any input would be much appreciated! Thanks, Otto -
Vauxhall Corsa C - Coil pack keeps failing 11 Nov 2016 (Forum)
This was confirmed by the error codes on the dash. I replaced it but the replacement coil pack didnt work. I called a breakdown company who cleared the codes and the same error codes returned, they said the replacement coil pack was faulty. I returned the faulty part and the new one worked straight away but tonight it has failed again and the car broke down- I am getting the same error codes. -
Kia Carens - 'safe' motoring 5 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Afternoon all My current car is currently at a garage following a lack of oil pressure (known fault for the make model). There is a chance it is uneconomical to repair. Even if I have got away with minimal damage it'll still be expensive to repair. -

Peugeot 306 - 306 Hdi ticking / knocking 10 Jun 2012 (Forum)
I only had the bottom pulley replaced around 4-5 years ago so surely its not this again?!¬! What else could it be? I am taking it to a garage tomorrow as the car sounds very bad and I am scared of a breakdown or engine damage. How can I try to make sure the garage is correct in its diagnosis and doesn't try to rip me off with a puley when i don't need one? Is there anything I could look for myself? -
nissan micra 1998 - starting problem 17 Dec 2011 (Forum)

Peugeot 307 19 Jun 2011 (Forum)
I bought this from new and have had numerous problems such as electronic service indicator counting down very very quickly, carpet coming adfift of the trim, exterior door rubbing strips coming adrift of the door, a breakdown whilst driving, steering lock/ignition key recall problem, glovebox release mechanism broken, horn intermittently not working, paint chipping on bonnet despite mainly slow speed driving, hatchback would not close until shut several times, rear seat velour stitching not finished, remote central locking intermittently not working, electronic oil level indicator reading empty despite being virtually full, etc nearly all are now resolved but very frustrating and lets the car down - anybody else with simailar experiences ????? -
Ford focus tdci - coolant pressurisation 14 Oct 2010 (Forum)
But, i have since realised that the cooling system is becoming pressureised as the water isn't hot and the water resavoir releif stopper is releasing the pressure and the coolant is now a rusty colour..... ive taken the car back to the garage that did the work but he is telling me he cant detect a problem...... -
Does the old nylons trick really work? 14 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Now, I thought about suggesting his girlfriend whip off her tights/stockings and we'd fix it with those. In the event, I gave him a lift to a garden centre which had a cafe/local knowledge of breakdown services/hotels etc. My question is can a fan belt be replaced, even temporarily, with stockings or tights? -
03 Honda Accord Tourer Creaking Clutch 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Just seeing if anyone has had the problem of a creaking clutch on the Honda Accord. My car has done around 27,000 miles and is developing an audible creak, which can also be felt through the pedal, on depressing the clutch. A quick look on the web (and at the CBC breakdown) makes me wonder whether this is a clutch master cylinder fault. -
Saxo broken drive shaft 13 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I was surprised to see it was tubular rather than solid and it had ended up like a corkscrew. Also the joint attached to the gearbox had been nearly yanked out causing oil spillage. The car has never been involved in an accident so I'm at a loss as to the cause. A local breakdown firm who stopped to assist as I arrived knew exactly the problem before lifting the bonnet and said it was a common fault. -
freelander woes again 17 Nov 2004 (Forum)

Reliability: 528i vs S-Type 15 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Would anyone kindly comment on the 1) which is more reliable? i.e. less likely a need of parts 2) less likely to breakdown? i.e. more likely you will make your journey. 3) depreciation? 4) part prices? We got some prices from GSF & EuroCarParts for BMW but is there any source of parts for Jaguar? 5) Regular faults with either car? -
AA satellite location 3 Jul 2003 (Forum)
It then goes on to say that with satellite location we will know exactly where to find you. Is this a new idea and linked to your mobile phone or do you have some other gizmo in your car with you. Looked on the AA site but couldn?t see any reference to it and wondered if my Green Flag also does the same. On our annual trip down through France and Spain I always try and have an idea of just where I am in case of breakdown, but often I think it would be a vague and not very helpful guess within 30 miles. alvin -
Skoda for a learner ? 5 May 2003 (Forum)
It's done 38k and has had its 40k service but the road tax is due to expire in the next month or two I believe. Question - would such a car be a good starting point for someone with not very much money who is learning to drive and doesn't want to spend a fortune on insurance, petrol, servicing etc ? I checked the CBC Breakdown and it mentioned heavy steering but wifey is pretty strong so I don't envisage any huge problems on that front ;-) Anyone got any thoughts ? -
Vauxhall Commitment?? 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Hi, I am looking at getting a Vauxhall Astra or similar sized car soon and wonder if anyone can help. Until last year we always bought Corsa's and if they broke down or if they were off the road for more than 24 hours we got a hire car free of charge. I believe it was called Vauxhall Commitment and was brought in by Vauxhall from 2000 and included a 3 year warranty and Breakdown cover. -
Car damaged by workshop - iffy repair. 23 Mar 2009 (Forum)
i took my car to have a new part on it. the car was involved in an accident whilst at the garage. this resulted in having doors, windows, front wing replaced plenty of filler in the car, mainly to the back of the car the piece that runs up past the boots window and rear door window towards the roof. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 16-12-2017 Part 1 16 Dec 2017 (Forum)
To the chap who would like to think that a catastrophic engine breakdown should have prompted a safety recall: the law disagrees with you. In this country a car is deemed safe if it passes the MOT test. The MOT test pays no attention at all to an engine that has broken down or is about to break down.
