  • Confess - how many of you do this? 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Driving to work this morning a car lurched across the road at me at a relatively slow speed. As I braked hard, I noticed that the cause was the driver putting his seat belt on after the car was in motion. It something I've often observed and I can't understand why people can't put their belt on before they set off.
  • Rear wheel alignment 2001 - Honda Accord 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I've recently had my car laser checked which has revealed that my n/s/r wheel is out of alignment- the car has a slight pull to the left which is most noticable under braking. Is the rear alignment adjustable and if so is this a Honda dealer job or could I expect to find an independent to carry out the work? Thanks, 9000

  • Micra load sensing valve 8 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Our 1996 Micra failed its MOT with poor near side rear brake pressure. Leaking cylinder replaced at reasonable £13. Still failed with faulty load sensing valve diagonosed (stops rear wheels locking up). Dealer wants THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY quid for a new valve!!
  • Torque and BHP 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I understand that torque is measuring the ability to turn or twist something about an axis (ie. the driveshaft of a car), but how does that relate in the real world to car engines, in comparison to the brake horse power of an engine? Basically, what's the difference, in layman's terms? For example, why do diesel engines generally have higher torques, than their equivalent bhp petrol cousins, and how does this translate in the actual drive from each engine?
  • 1998 AMG E55 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I've seen a 98 S reg AMG E55 at a local dealers priced at 15995 with 90k on the clock... looks mint outside and in, and has full MB history. Any opinions? I know servicing, types brakes etc will be expensive for this sort of car, but are there too many miles on the clock for this to be a sound buy? I thought Mercs were supposed to be pretty bulletproof, but maybe these AMGs one are different?
  • 306 fluid change - worth the bother? 7 May 2004 (Forum)
I need to change the oil, coolant and brake fluid in my 150k 306 diesel which I bought six months ago. After I've bought all the fluids and spent hours reading my haynes manual to find bleed valves and things, is it worth it? How big a job is it and how much time/labour would it take a garage to do it?

  • omega clunk 5 Oct 2003 (Forum)
When I slow down I get a mechanical clunk sound. It's either when changing from 3rd to 2nd, or from 2nd to 1st during braking. Access is dismal underneath, even so I wouldn't know what to check 1st. Anyone any ideas? Hope I don't need a new gearbox! Cheers, Pete
  • Pulling to the Left 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
My old non-power-steering Volvo 440 ('G' reg) pulls to the left, it's not violent and it seems to be the same whether under braking or not. If you take your hands off the wheel it'll run into kerb within 3-4 seconds. Have checked tyre pressures and they're OK, it passed its MOT so I presume steering geometry and suspension bits are OK, anyone got any ideas?
  • Handbrake icing up 26 May 2003 (Forum)
During snowy conditions this can be particularly dodgy as the car slides all over the place until the heat generated by the car's motion releases the brake. It can take up to ten miles until it fully releases. Has anybody else experienced this and is there a cure?
  • volvo v40 1.8t 2002 4 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have owned this car since new...multiple problems...electrics /lights/brakes etc. Latest problem...the TURBO is leaking oil. Luckily I have warranty up to 60,000 miles but HAVE to get rid of it before then as cannot afford the repairs! I will NEVER buy another Volvo. Considered more of a Discussion thread than a Technical Matters thread to me, hence moved to Discussion.
  • Renault 19 TD Funny Noises!! 26 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Recently got hold of a Renault 19 TD (RT) and took if for some new tyres. About 9 hours after fitting them the car makes what i can only describe a rubbery noise when braking! a sort of squeak, and it now makes some odd knocking/wobbling noises when you turn to the right. any ideas? thanks in advance! //Steve
  • RAV4 (00-) - Alloy corrosion 13 Jan 2003 (Forum)
For those of you who bought one of the first RAV4's in the new shape, have you noticed a certain blackening on your alloys, more so on the front? You may want to check the surface finish next time you're cleaning the brake dust off. It should really be lacquered... We advised the Toyota franchise and they replaced the whole set - yes, FIVE new alloys, properly lacquered.
  • Air flow when TB is closed? 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
How does an engine get its air when you take your foot off the throttle but leave it in gear (engine braking). I am assuming that the engine is not actually firing and is creating a near total vacuum inside as the idle bypass could not possibly provide enough air flow to keep 5k revs happy. Please enlighten me!
  • M25 Ripple effect ? 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The M25 has always seemed to suffer from a ripple effect - hold ups which suddenly appear then disappear for no apparent reason. I've hear it is due to the combination of high volumes of traffic and the erratic braking of some drivers. If this is so, why havn't I ever come across the ripple effect on other busy motorways ? Have I missed something or is the M25 a special case for some reason ? Any ideas anyone ?
  • the volvo judder 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
it only judders when the car is stationary and is worse when the engine is cold. when i increase the revs with the accelarator to around 900rpm (whilst still stationary) the judder stops but the car pulls on the brakes. can anyone give me any advice as to what is causing this. Cheers.. MG
  • 306 turbo diesel cam belt 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Its time to change my 95 306 xrtd cam belt , last time I did this task the most awkward bit was getting cam belt top rear cover removed. The brake resevoir gets in the way, I ended up lifting the resevoir out of the way which of course dumped the fluid all over the bulkhead. Any suggestions?
  • Ford Ka - Seized spark plugs 19 Jul 2002 (Forum)
As my daughter is taking delivery of one soon, I was wodering if any of you tech-heads know of any product on the market to prevent this happening. Would the copper grease used on brake calipers be suitable or not? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
