  • Can speeding ever be safer? 3 Jun 2008 (Forum)
But in every case, I was able to demonstrate how driving more slowly was the safer option. Simple, really: slower speed=increased time for reaction, smaller braking distances, less risk. The guys were unconvinced by this; I'm sticking to my guns and trusting in Mr Newton.
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 92 1.4 Making a squealing sound 14 May 2008 (Forum)
It sounds like it is on the front driver's side somewhere in the engine and so far hasn't affected the way the car drives. Is okay when I am driving at speed but squeals alot when going around corners, roundabouts and at junctions when I am either slowing and then going faster again or stopping and then going off again.

  • Traffic Congestion & the School Run 13 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My wife walks the kids to school, she knows that by driving them (which she has to option to do) she is teaching them to be lazy and it is so unhealthy for them. So why does every other parent wants to? It is evident from school holidays the major source of congestion on our roads is caused by the School run.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 2001 DTI No power on start up or in acceleration? 24 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Sometimes I have to pull over to allow cars behind to pass as it takes a while to reach 30 mph!! After a few moments driving it bursts back into life. If I leave the car running for a couple of minutes however this problem is non existent and I can drive away as normal. There are no faults displaying on the dash.Is this a common fault and is there a remedy or is it a number of faults and a costly exercise to eliminate each one?
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003 130TDCi - Erratic idle. 28 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The bigger bottle £15 from halfords, added to tank then filled up with shell diesel. Efffect - Car appears to be cured. No erratic idle and no wanting to drive at 1550 revs when in gear. Hope this helps anyone having similar problems.
  • Both cars stolen last night - Vol 2 12 Jan 2008 (Forum)
-i say broken into - what actually happened was that he heard a noise outside, opened the door and got rushed - obviosuly a mistake but it shows how alarms, panick buttons, window locks suddenly become totally irrelevent. i can only think the safest way is to drive either old or non-flash cars - there does seem quite a bit of this in manchester area recently
  • Discouraging Drink Drivers 21 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Drink driving is unforgivable. However , most of the Backroom will either be hosting or attending family and / or social gatherings over the next couple of weeks at which larger than normal quantities of "festive cheer" will be quaffed.
  • Mercedes Benz 190 W201 Diesels (1983 - 1993) - Looking to get an older Merc diesel - any advice? 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Currently looking at a 1994 2.5 diesel auto saloon (cant remember the class, think its a 190, should have taken note!) The vehicle is in mint condition, full leather interior etc, has only done 112K and drives superbly (having taken it for a test drive). Its not that lively, given it is not turbo charged, but it seems to go well. What's your thoughts on this, is there anything I need to look out for, would it be a good solid purchase to see me though a few years?
  • Cross-ply Tyres 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
s when Cross-ply tyres were common place, and Radials were just becoming popular, also at the time that this rule would have applied most cars would be rear-wheel drive. Supposing cross-plies were still available to fit, and considering most cars are now front wheel drive, is it still sensible to ?publicise? this statement. I only ever had one car that had cross-ply tyres fitted, and at the time they seemed o.k, was it simply the superiority of the Radial that brought about their demise or were they really carp?
  • Modern automatics 2 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Now as far as I know, you cannot buy a 4 speed manual anymore? So why would they make a 4 speed manual? Out on a test drive with my dad it just seemed to be too far between each gear? Still to test drive the Skoda but by all accounts it is a smooth changer. So am I wrong to compare a 4 speed manual with an auto? Also, why is the CO2 emissions on an auto so much higher than the manual version?
  • Amortising Diesel Costs 7 Sep 2007 (Forum)
In other words at present fuel prices, the increased fuel consumption of the petrol car is offset by its lower purchase price such that until you get to 100,000 the actual saving to you if you buy the diesel is nil. OK I can accept that, but... If you bought one one each, and drive them identically for say 50,000 over three years, would you get more money for the diesel and would this not overcome the difference in the purchase price? If the answer is no, would you pay £2,000 for a car that may have more enjoyable driving characteristics, or would you buy a different model entirely on that basis.?
  • Small Car, must have armrest (really...) 15 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Right, further to my previous post re 4x4s, I've now decided to take the plunge and have a 4x4 and a smaller car (which the good lady can also learn to drive in...) But, having racked my brains I can't come up with a supermini (or similar) sized car that has the following criteria: 1. Must Must Must have a centre arm rest. Without it I get a really bad shoulder 2.
  • New Car This Summer - Ideas 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Currently drive 2004 Fiesta 1.25...it's a good little car but i have a few issues with it (particularly the ridiculous digital petrol gauge). Situation is I will be off to Univeristy soon and wont be taking the car with me, so i'll be using the car much less.
  • BMW 5 Series iDrive. 15 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Also I wonder what engine one should buy for economy with both plenty of long distance and daily city driving. I see the 520D is good; but one report said it was a bit under engined. I'm not interested in enormous performance, mainly sensible reasonably legal driving. They also recommended an auto gearbox rather than the manual one.
  • Vehicle Logging form 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Friend of mine has a small car sales emporium and he is (was) in the habit of letting customers do test drives on their own with his trade plates in the window. A few months ago he did the same thing customer came back parked the car up kicked the tyres (he had shorts on so its the law) and said the immortal words " i think i will leave it mate" and was gone into the sunset.
  • Repairing a private road 16 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The final straw today was when, despite driving over it slowly and carefully, I managed to ground the car. Don't think any damage was done (will check), but I want to get it sorted. Is it simply a case of writing to the farmer explaining the situation, and asking what he intends to do about it?
  • Intermittant fault - one dead 15 Apr 2007 (Forum)
How exactly would a clutch not working have led to her speeding down the hill? Would this have been dropped in England? I am bemused that some one driving a car with a known fault, killing someone, is not prosecuted with, at least, driving a car unfit to be on the road.
  • Escort Encore 1.6 braking problem 25 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Its only luck that no other vehicles have been around at the same time. I wear quite chunky boots for driving so put it done to this but then my Dad took it for a test run today and the same thing happened to him! Has anyone ever heard of this problem. I have driven for 20 years and have always been quite confident but as you can imagine I am not comfortable driving this vehicle.
