HJ writes "I don't recommend old cars and certainly don't want to get myself entangled in endless 'practical motoring' type enquiries that take up far too much time and generate no revenue." Fair enough, a motoring journalist deserves to receive an income for sharing his expertise- but are we to conclude that HJ generates income by recommending certain brands of new cars ... tyres, fuel, etc.? -
Ford Focus Estate 2012 Titanium - Car Radio DAB 20 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Hi everyone Does anyone know how to retune the sony in built radio to rescan stations as some stations are not being picked up and they show... -
Recommendations needed please. 31 May 2019 (Forum)
My son will be leaving University this summer. He will be 22, and quite sensible (not a boy racer lol). I need recommendations for a good car to help him buy. I would like something which is possibly 3/4 years old max, about £4,000 to £4,500 at a push £5,000. Somewhere between 1200 and max 1400 cc. A good reliable solid car ... any suggestions would be very welcome. -
Toyota Corolla - Ariel 2 Jan 2019 (Forum)
I have a T registration Toyota Corolla with a radio ariel that goes over the top front of the car. I have a new radio that has replaced the original factory radio and consequently the sound is better but is there a way I can improve the signal. My ariel is a screw on type and it's not loose, or am I stuck with the ariel I have because it's an old car? -
N/A - 1000miles a year oil change 1 Oct 2018 (Forum)
I despair HJ Agony column today advising a OAP to get his 5yr old car oil changed every year. The oil is probably as clean as the day it went in there with this sort of use. The car obviously needs an annual MOT so feel sure that this would cover any safety contingencies for him. -
Mazda 2 1.5 Sport (2011) - Heavy Tyre Wear on Mazda 2 6 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Having got through a set of original Toyo tyres in 15,000 miles my car has covered since new, is there an alternative wheel/tyre that can be fitted or will this upset the speedo etc. I hate low profiles so much I look at cars with the old fashion rubber with absolute envy. -
Volkswagen Polo - Petrol cap 3 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I can't open the flap to get to the fuel cap. Is this a motorised mechanism? Because i have an extended warrentee on the car from the place i bought it from as the car is only 4 years old and hasnt even got 30,000 on the clock. They are refusing to repair it as it is only a wear and tear item and not mechanical or electrical. -

Ford Mondeo {58 Reg} TDCi - Clattering Dieslel 20 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Some days my car sounds like a an old stye diesel lorry {clatter ,clatter} when I put my down as I accelarate up through the gears. Other days it as quiet as the petrol car I used to drive. I'm new to diesels having always driven petrol models, is this something that is normal to diesels. -

2000 (W) 1.2 Corsa - Vauxhall Corsa won't start 8 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Car won't start. All 'normal' lights lit on dashboard, turn key and all we get is a clicking sound from engine. Took battery out and re-charged - no effect, still won't start. Battery is original in car - 10 years old, although still has green marker showing on top of battery. -
Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 02 2.0 Tyre speed rating - which one to fit? 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My car needs 4 new tyres. The ones I want to fit made by Kumho only come in V rating The 8 year old originals still on the car are H rated. Is it OK to fit the V's? Will my insurers or the MOT test be a problem? -
Volkswagen Golf VI (2009 - ) - New Golf delivery 21 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I have ordered a new Golf VI Tdi under scrappage. The delivery date keeps moving - car has been ordered but delivery has slipped from late August to late September or early October. The MOT on my old car was up so te garage has removed it for destruction. Are VW way behind on their Golf delivery promises? -
FIAT Bravo (2007 - ) - New Fiat Bravo? 9 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I'm looking for a 150bhp Diesel (tried the 150 T jet but wasn't keen) but am a little concerned these cars have Stilo underpinnings. I know there are probally much better cars for the money but I love the way they look and they look very good value for money at two years old but is they a valid reason for this or is it just fear of Fiats? -
Number plate valuation 7 Apr 2009 (Forum)
My daughter's getting rid of her thirteen year old Micra. It's got an NI registration TAZ nnnn. I was wondering if it might be worthwhile trying to sell it seperately. The car's taxed and tested so there should be no issues there. I've no experience in this area and haven't a clue if it's got any value and if it has would it be more trouble and costly re-registering the car than the return on the registration? -
What's in *your* cubby hole? 20 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I ask this question, since I have just remembered that the tin-opener, which I have been looking for, off and on, for some weeks, has just turned up in the car's cubby hole. It was accompanied by a pair of opera-glasses, some ears of wheat, a few car-park tickets, some old moorland sheep's bones, and some things that really shouldn'tve been there. So, what's in yours? -
FIAT Grande Punto (2006 - 2009) - 1.2 - Anyone driven one? 2 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Just wondering if anyone's had a drive in this car? Thinking about one to replace my Fiesta 1.25. Is the 1.2 engine painfully slow or actually not too bad in the old rev-the-nuts-off-it Italian small car way? Also had a look at the Mitsubishi Colt, £5k ish to spend. -
VW Bora 1.6 S 21 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi there everyone, Just bought one of these today. 1 previous owner, 15k on the clock, 04 registration, £6495 from an approved dealer. Really excited about it, got a pretty good deal for my old car too. Picking it up next Tuesday, but not sure I can wait that long! Has anybody had any experience of these cars? What did you think of it? Cheers -
Nissan Almera 10 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I am thinking of buying a Nissan Almera, It has been written off by the insurance as cat c. The dealer selling the car told me that he has replaced front head lights, front, back bumper and a passanger side wing. Its for about 2000 £ and is 7 years old. Do you think its worth spending that much money on this car??
