Unpaid VED 27 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Evasion rates are highest for motorcycles and "other" vehicles, the figures show. In addition, evasion among cars and vans that are more than 10 years old is five times as high than those which are less than a decade old. The report revealed there were 1,338,000 unlicensed cars and vans on the road in 2006, costing an estimated £170 million in lost revenue. -
Ideal vehicle for 200k miles in a year? 24 Aug 2006 (Forum)
We would be looking at the van versions (ie 3-door hatchbacks minus seats and rear side windows) of the Fiesta, Punto and 206, the old-shape Astravan (now built in SA), also at cars such as the Fabia and Octavia, and maybe a last-of-old-shape Focus or Astra. Should we try to run something for two years or change it after one? Which vehicles would give us the best real-world mpg figures at 70-80mph? -
Petrol, diesel, hybrid? (No EVs please) - Advice on car for retirement 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
I always took car allowance rather than a company car. Hence a succession of big Citroens, Alfas, Saabs, Lexuses (Lexi?) and latterly Jaguars. I've had my current XF 'S' Premium Luxury 3.0 auto for seven years - it was six years old when I got it and has still only done 118k miles. -
Honda Civic 1.0 SR - First impressions 9 May 2019 (Forum)
It turns over about 2400rpm at 70 where my car runs at 3000. However the 1.0 feels much less responsive when putting the foot down at 65+ in 6th. The 1.8 has a sweet spot at an indicated 70 that the 1.0 does not. So underway the new car takes the prize at lower speeds but the old one seems the better motorway cruiser. -
vauxhall corsa 52 reg - second hand car problems 7 months after buying it 17 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Who wont take my calls 7 months in and already the cost is mounting up. Do I have legal case or will just be the cars old, wear and tear -
KIA Cerato Diesel - - Is this car a good buy?-£3.8K, 2005/55 -42K mile 13 May 2010 (Forum)
The car costs £ 3500. Its a 2005/55 registration and has run 42000 miles. It's a Cerato 1.5 CRDi GS My concerns about this car:- 1) Is the price right? The price is is £325 above the what car valuation for this car. -
Lamborghini factory tour 25 Aug 2014 (Forum)
We could have also visited Maranello for Ferrari museum, but I have always had a soft spot for Lamborghinis. Maybe I should revert to my old screen name of Espada III, the one car not on display in the museum. Apparently it is in Bologna airport and my favourite car of all time swiftly followed by a proper two cylinder Fiat 500 from about 1970. -
Ford Mondeo TDCi 130 Zetec - Replacement for poor Mondeo 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
, to a Passat (though I know they may not be great high-milers), to the old model Audi A6. I'd really appreciate it if Backroomers could offer opinions on those cars as sound buys, what it's like running an older high-mileage car (it would be a first for me), and any suggestions about other family-size vehicles. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.3 Car is loosing oil, water and brake fluid 26 Apr 2008 (Forum)

Door skin dent resistance properties 13 May 2006 (Forum)
Door dings have cropped up many times on this website and a forum search gives so many hits that I'm not going to trawl through them, but after the driver's door on a Mercedes ML left a crease in my V70 front passenger door at Heathrow Pink Elephant parking I wondered how much steel properties varying with build date (age) and make has a part in susceptibility. My wife's 306 Sedan is now eleven years old and is at high risk of door dings; it is frequently parked in hospital car parks (she is a midwife) with narrow slots, town centre car parks, and airport car parks. I have lost count of the number of times I have polished away paint from other car doors but despite all this contact it only has one actual dent (tiny) where a door was opened into it with great force (I watched it happen). -
Ford Europe Update 16 Apr 2019 (Forum)
No longer able to order for fleet customers, fleets pushed towards Focus estate or Kuga Edge - still build quality problems, significance number of customers bring them back by a year old and trade them for a Kuga or Ranger, most find them hard to live with. Tourneo Courier - van based MPV now officially given a place in the UK market since January, dealers able to offer best finance deals on the market for this car type (shame honest John fails to provide a road test and review in the car section of his website). -
Internal combustion, 60 years on 19 May 2007 (Forum)
Oil fired or to take it to the limit a nuclear reactor as heat source. Its still an external combustion steam engine, but wow! not as we knew them. As we look at the old Mallard and consider just what `could be possible, if we wished`.... The engineer of tomorrow, another 60 years into the future considers our internal combustion cars of today. What would be possible staying true to the internal combustion engine principles? -
Any - Suzuki SX4 SCross vs Honda Civic vs Toyota Avensis 23 Feb 2019 (Forum)
The car we buy now will be in addition to our existing car. A 2008 Ford Focus with 70000 miles, owned since 2010. The ford will become my wife's car used for the school run and my wife's local commute, while the new car we buy will become my car. -
Citroen C2 - Twice bitten.... 18 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Now some of this I expect from a 12 year old car but they confirmed that the CHG has not been replaced and the leak had been repaired using a water born sealant additive (a temporary measure at best) with traces of the stuff left in both the oil and the water. -
Unreasonable expectations re: part exchange? 24 Nov 2008 (Forum)
We were looking to buy a new Honda Civic Type S, and had the Parker/What Car etc baseline valuations to hand for our old cars - about £5000 for the Civic and £7700 for the Micra. So we were a bit shocked when we were offered £9500 for the both of them - indeed, we were shown the guidebook which apparently confirms these prices (though I am pretty sure they could do better than these!). -
12k budget for a new car to do 30k miles a year 27 Feb 2016 (Forum)
I'm currently running an Alfa Romeo 156SW 1.9 JTD Multijet Veloce (150ps) and its gone 106k so time for a change. Not purchased a car for 8 years and until change of job recently needed a commuting car. I have a bit of work to get mine going as it should hence the need to change. My preference would be the BMW but am a bit wary of spending on a 6 year old car. -
VW - Need some advice on buying a family car for £2-4k 6 Jan 2015 (Forum)
My situation: I have three daughters aged 9 months, 3 years and 8 years old, and of course a wife. We have between £2000 and £4000 to spend on a car. We need enough room at the rear to fit 3 car seats or 2 at the back + wife. We obviously dont want to be crammed in like sardines like most conventional cars in this configuration. -
Audi A1 Sportback - AUDI A1 1.6TDI 105 BHP FAILS TO START OR RUN 15 Aug 2014 (Forum)
The car was towed to Lomond Audi in Glasgow who carried out further investigations for a couple of days. They said that the car appeared all OK and even the EGR was fine. They were stumped and contacted the technical experts at Audi Technical advice centre. -
Ford Focus - Rejecting a Used Car - do I stand a chance? 3 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject and am getting quite despondant! I bought a 10 month old focus from a ford dealer In November 2011. Within 2 weeks the engine warning light came on - to cut short a very long story, I've had the AA out twice and the car has been in to the dealers 6 times in 2 months. -
Any Small Car - £500 Car Suggestions!! 20 Jun 2012 (Forum)
As the office will be moving back to a central location in approx 12 months I will then get the t rain to work again. So the easiest option for me is to get an old banger for 12 months to see me through as I cant afford too much as we have just brought a new house and have very little spare money. So I have been hunting on ebay etc for a £500 car or there abouts.
