  • Latest "Snake Oil" 26 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Today's Daily Telegraph has an advertisement for the latest "Fuel Saving Breakthrough". http://www.savingpetrol.com/home.asp £98 and there are 5 errors of spelling, syntax and grammar in the text plus a few more on the website. One wonders why a firm, apparently on the cutting edge of combustion technology can't pay someone to check their English!

  • Megane kangarooring 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I've got a Megane RT 1.6e with the 8v k7M engine (1998 vintage) which has started to kangaroo while accelerating in low gears, particularly so when pulling away in first. It is fine while cruising at a steady speed though. I recently changed the fuel filter which fixed a slightly different power delivery problem and it had been running perfectly since then. I'm beginning to suspect the cat may have gone, leaving me with a restricted exhaust. Does this sound feasible given the symptoms?
  • Could someone explain this please? 15 Feb 2005 (Forum)
My own car (V6 Mondeo) at simular speeds revs at about 3200ish. Now to me the higher revs means higher fuel use also i've heard the terms 'high geared' 'low geared' etc but what exactly does all this mean? Why are some high geared and other low? What's the advantages and disadvantages? All in laymans terms of course!
  • peugeot 306 dt 1997 timing 2 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I have currently done the head gasket and the stem seals and decoke, but when i have timed the engine up it appears now to puff clouds of black smoke, could the timing be out a tooth, i remember i had an astra td with this, and it turned our it was a cuple of teeth out, would it produce all the smoke, another thing is on the fuel pump there are 3 holes in which a bolt can be screwed into to lock the camshaft which one do i use left right or middle?
  • Kia Picanto - do you have one? 11 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As the car will be shared with SWMBO I'll be using it every now and again for a 125 mile each way run that is mainly motorways and dual carriageways. I'd appreciate real life feedback anyone can give me on their experiences particularly on fuel economy, how it drives on long runs, does it keep up at motorway speeds, comfort and if you've had any problems (hopefully not). Many thanks.
  • Nissan Almera 1.6SLX 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
We want an automatic but I dont want a particularly big car. We decided on a Nissan Almera. Now I'm thinking, how fuel efficient are these? We dont do a huge amount of driving, no more than 40 miles a week, what does the SLX mean? Will we be guzzling up petrol? At the moment we have an exhausted M reg fiesta. Any comments welcome!!
  • Should I buy a Rover SD1? 15 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It's a bit tatty internally, but the body is in very good form, especially for an SD1. I can just about afford it and the insurance. Fuel shouldn't be too bad as it would be a fun car, not an everyday. Trouble is, Mrs O will go mad..... Anyone know of a series 2 that I can go and have a look at? There seems to be a dearth of them in the for sale pages at the moment.
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) XX 6 Sep 2004 (Forum)
It is particularly annoying, as there is usually no reason to prevent them from travelling a little faster (speed limits for example). With our auto C5, it means driving along in third gear, which leads to increased fuel consumption.
  • Engine rotation - which way? 26 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I think I have worked it out in my mind - is it the camshaft operating the valves in the right sequence that means the engine cannot run backwards? So if say on a very simple engine the inlet and exhaust manifolds were reversed, and the fuel fed in the 'exhaust', would it run the other way round?
  • Renault Vans 13 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I cant even find a cheaper import. (The Renault also has the best standard spec.) Does anyone know where I can compare fuel consuption figures for vans?
  • immobilser removal - Pug 306TD 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
306 turbo diesel lucas fuel pump. The above mentioned piece has an immobilser fitted to it, I have been advised I can remove a steel plate and take the immobiliser relay out of it. This is not due to theft or anything, I bought a complete engine to replace a normal aspirated engine.
  • NGK Iridium Plugs..... 25 Feb 2004 (Forum)

  • Ford Diagnostic Trouble Codes 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
When I go in to view the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (hold in the reset button on the odometer and start the car then scroll through the options) it is showing the following DTC - 9202 which, according to the index, means "Fuel Sender Open Circuit". What I need to know is what this means in English and what I need to tell my mechanic to get it fixed. Very greatful for any advice. Thanks.

  • Mercedes 430 Oxygen Sensor? 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have a 3year old 42k mile ML430. I've had it a couple of weeks and the fuel consumption is worse than my previous ML430 (i.e. terrible). It smells like it is running rich all the time and even when fully warmed up the exhaust still smells 'rich' and slighly smoky. I am guessing something could be wrong with the oxygen sensor or the connections.
  • Going to Rochdale, advice please! 21 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Just wondering if anyone knows of any Specs systems or other nasty scamera systems on this route? I've already taken care of the other essentials, fuel, tyres all inflated to fully laden pressures, car cleaned out, and I'll be getting some Red Bulls, some Werthers and a bag of Haribo from the 24 hour Asda at about 5am this morning :-) Advice appreciated!
  • Bangers - an alternative view 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
There can be little doubt that modern cars brake and hold the road better, produce less emissions, use less fuel and are in most ways safer for both occupants and other road users. Japan applies such stringent tests on cars that it is not viable to keep them when they are more than 4 or 5 years old. Which is why many finish up scrapped or, sadly, exported to Britain.
  • Stories of high mileage cars 29 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Also, can any owners tell me the MPG of 2.0 litre cars (any make) in town and motorway with high and low mileages. Finally, what advise can be given for a petrol to last a long time and use the same amount of fuel even with high mileages. Responses will be appreciated>
