LHD HGV Danger 9 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Obviously if the road is busy (as was the case in my son's accident) you have no option but to overtake. I am not trying to scare people but just to bring this hazzard to your attention. Safe driving everyone. Paul. -
Light(ish) Van Speed limits 30 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I have recently taken delivery of a nice shiny new Ford Transit Connect as replacement for my Escort van, it looks a bit like Postman Pat should be driving it but it is a quite surprisingly good drive with a nice upright driving position and a nice responsive engine. Now, to the nitty gritty, my old Escort was regarded as a 'car derived van' and as such had to obey the same speed limits as a car and had a Gross Vehicle Weight of 1950Kg. -
What car should I buy 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
A string of minor incidents, two punctures, the quarter panel being keyed and the nearside wing being dented in a pub carpar in the feww weeks that I've been driving it have made me realise its not the car for me. I'n convinced its jinxed so its got to go. I'm currently back to driving my old Cavalier td whilst the Audi is in the bodyshop. I'll keep running that until I find soemthing suitable to replace it with. -
new Citroen C5 poor fuel consumption 17 Jun 2005 (Forum)
They can't explain the poor fuel consumption, the erratic tickover nor the fact that the pollution system warning light came on for no apparent reason during a long normal driving trip at speeds well above that at which these pesky devices become unstable. Anyone else got a problem? -
Renault Megane Test function 7 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Im not sure whether the check is a complete system check and has to go through the whole routine or whether its on a time system but Its one to bear in mind. The next time I do it, I will make sure that im not driving from A to B. -
Basic maintenance knowledge 15 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I know there has been some plan to add a basic maintenance component to the driving test and I seem to recall some discusison about it on this forum. Let me propose something. As part of the driving test, applicants will be taken into a garage with a row of test vehicles, all of which are low in various fluids and have under or over inflated tires. -
What should I buy....help! 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
So to cut a long story short, I sold my Mini last week and am in need of a car to have some fun with as obviously, the Civic is nice, but I cant do anything to it! I cant see the point of buying a Honda - as i drive them every day and I fancy something different as a consiquence. As far as i see it i have 2 choices: 1. Get something fun, raw and wild - for weekends etc.. 2. Get a medium exec car like a 3 series coupe, lexus IS200 My criteria is: MUST seat at least 2 people - preferably 4 sometimes MUST do 0-60mph in under 10 seconds MUST be respectable to drive MUST be under £12.5k MUST be insurable! -
Police - "Illegal motors 'epidemic'" 21 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Problem ... police roadside checks catch only a fraction of illegal drivers ILLEGAL driving by refugees has reached epidemic proportions, a police force claimed yesterday. Six asylum seekers AN HOUR are caught at the wheel in Wolverhampton without licences, tax, insurance or MOTs. Immigrants from countries including Iraq, Afghanistan and many African nations hold driving licences in their homelands but fail to convert them to UK documents as they legally must after a year. -
Toyota Avensis D-4D 7 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Drove straight to the Audi dealer and started a process that ended up with an ex-demo A4 Avant Sport on the drive. The whole car FEELS so much more solid than the Toyota - and I'll even just about forgive its lack of heated mirrors. Dynamically it's fine too. So do any of you backroomers drive a new Avensis, and how do you like it? -
VW Golf Mk IV 1 Jan 2004 (Forum)
However it comes without any radio / cd player. My main worry is that they dont allow you to test drive and I havent seem car of similar spec ie diesel tiptronic in a sports model at any VW dealer so dont know what it drives like. Its advertised as a 130PS(old bhp)so should have some oomph but not sure what effect the tiptronic transmission will have. -
Benefits of Optimax... 28 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Morning all, I've just got back from a long driving weekend through France, where, in my wisdom, I decided to buy some petrol before I left (ferry was getting in at 7am - I just wanted to drive when I was there and not spend/waste time looking for a garage). -
Thoughts on driving in France 25 Aug 2003 (Forum)
but have to conclude that theirs is an ?anything goes? culture. Add to this some outrageous instances of dangerous driving and its not surprising that the annual French road death carnage is double our own ? and I?m not complacent about our own record which must improve?. Still, I had a great time ? drove down overnight and was surprised still to be in a steady flow of traffic at 3.30am? -
MB gullwing to launch in Cape Town! 22 Jul 2003 (Forum)
On the first day the eight-car convoy will head for Cape Point, returning along the False Bay coast to take in the views from Boyes Drive. On Day 2 they will gun their motors for Gordon's Bay and travel along Clarence Drive - past Steenbras River Mouth, Rooi Els and Betty's Bay - and on to Hermanus. They will return via Franschhoek Pass. -
Turbocharging and drive by wire 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I am still delighted with the V70 2.4T that I purchased new in March. On a recent drive to the Czech Republic and back, four up with a boot load of kit, it would pull hard out of uphill hairpins from low RPM that a modern turbodiesel would shudder at, or spin effortlessly up to high revs when the mood took. -
The future could be bleak 8 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Judging by the sort of behaviour HF and I witness daily outside our local school the future of driving is looking bleak. Where have all the manners gone? Where is the consideration for others? Nowhere to be seen if our area is representative. Parents today don't seem to bother teaching their young ones these things and in many cases don't practice them either. -
Turning a British Car into a French Car 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
However, at the MOT the passat failed on hand brake (not serious), but also because the head lights point the wrong way (the lens is for British cars which drive on the left). The MOT chap told me to get new lenses (made in Europe, set for driving on the right) or new lights in total. VW main dealer only sells full front light sets, not lenses and guess what, they cost 400E a pair!!!! -
BMW offset pedals 16 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I didn't realise that the pedals in a 3 series are offset to the right - the clutch pedal is on the centreline of the driving position. Consequently, although the top half of your body is square to the steering wheel, your legs are both canted to the right. The driving position is also fairly low, and so as you depress the clutch it causes a twist and stretch action. -
Jottings from Sweden 10 Dec 2002 (Forum)
On an icy road where I nearly fell over whilst getting in to the car, I had to consciously try in order to provoke wheelspin, such was the available grip. What a pleasure too driving in a country that if switched on it's southern shore would reach Rome, but has less population than London.... Oh well, M25 here I come in two hours time... /Steve -
Waiting to Happen 21 Apr 2002 (Forum)
A number of residents have approached her and asked her to drive sensibly. She is abusive. She has a sticker in her rear window "How My Driving? Call 0800 Eat-****" Any sensibile suggestions on action welcome from Backroomers. What should we do? Will the police be in any position to caution her, and on what grounds? -
Foreign lorries sideswiping cars 28 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Has anybody come across similar incidents? Within a 6 week period I have had two friends both driving on the M20 in Kent at different times both being - for want of a better description - sideswiped by a left-hand drive foreign lorry. It seems that the lorries, both with trailers, were pulling out from the inside lane to the centre lane when they hit the cars.
