  • Bump Starting an Automatic? 25 Feb 2005 (Forum)
We have all had the ignition on, rolled down a hill in neutral, then popped it in to third. Hey presto! your manual car has started. (If it was a diesel it would keep going without any electrics at all day like this.....) Anyway, how do you bump start an auto ? I can't think....
  • 2002 corsa 1.2- electrical probs 13 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Driving along normally. he hears a clicky, arcing sort of sound and everything goes dead on the dash and engine dies, though the hazard flashers still work. The car starts normally after a few minutes. The dealer had a good look after the first breakdown but didn't find anything wrong, and replaced the ignition switch connector just in case. But it broke down again today!
  • Astra GTE 1989 (2ltr 16v) 18 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My idle valve seems to have had a nevous breakdown! Having fitted a second hand one, followed by a new one my engine still surges like there's a ghost in the car with its foot on the throttle. When it's not surging the revs drop so low the engine cuts out (scary when negotiation a turn!).
  • Punto auto transmission problem ? 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone know what the cause may be, whether these faults could be linked and whether or not urgent attention is required ? I seem to remember reading/hearing something about this but can't remember where and the Car Breakdown section doesn't give much information. Any feedback very gratefully received :-)

Sold car 3weeks later, insurance wont cancell the last 12 months unless i return cheque. so you finnish up paying for car you no longer own, cannot swop to new car either. Have also worked out the claim limit over the 2 year periods there run for is about the cost of insurance.
  • 1998 Scenic 1.6 - Dead Autobox? 28 Aug 2006 (Forum)
This is a friend's car so all of this is a bit third-hand at the moment.... The car is a 1998 Renault Scenic 1.6 Auto (I know, the work of the devil) which yesterday broke down and had to be trailered home. The symptoms were, whilst in Drive (or 1, 2 3) the engine would rev but the car wouldn't move.
  • Celica or ...? 7 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Reliability is fairly important. There are Celica 190s for under £10k on Auto Trader, and it gets a very good write up on the Car-by-Car Breakdown. However, I know the engine needs revs, and other sources suggest the noise can be tiresome. Others we have considered in the sub-£10k price range are the previous model Leon Cupra (possibly not as reliable as the Celica?)
  • BMW Z3 2.8 Nikasil recognition 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
BMW's mechanicals are outside of my area of expertise, but we know it to be a personal import, and I note HJ's comments in car by car breakdown: "2.8s imported from other markets may have vulnerable Nickasil-lined bores rather than steel-lined bores". My question is, do any of you know how I can tell if this is the case please?
  • Bora stops because the lights don't work 15 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Who are VW to tell you to stop driving without telling you why when it is something that isn't likely to damage the car? Talk about nanny state - we have nanny cars now.
  • Skoda Fabia coolant loss 19 Apr 2002 (Forum)
In the Car-by-Car Breakdown HJ has put the following comment. >What to Watch Out For >Make sure the 1.4 8v is not losing coolant and has not overheated through loss of coolant in the past, possibly due to friction on the bottom hose as a result of soft engine mountings.
  • Range Rover 10 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Not sure what the problem was with two of them, but one had a blowing exhaust which destroyed some of the pipework/seals and down she came. Luckily they were only doing ten miles an hour in a car park. But on the motorway it could have been very serious. Might be worth putting it in the "What's bad" section of the car breakdown. Cheers Chris
  • USED - Cars @TESCO 27 Dec 2011 (Forum)
You can't see the car till you have bought it... and i would never do that for a 3 yr old car, (will risk it for a 6 month old still under warranty.. but not from a "retail trade sales".  Too many unaswered questions for me,  and for very little more there are plentyof carsupermarts where you can see the cars at very similiar prices.
  • Second car and Insurance 5 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I had a quote from my present insurer who cover me on the Vectra, for £1050 a year on the Granada!! My premium for the Vectra is only £550 a year with breakdown cover and a protected NCB! Maybe it's a silly idea after all...anyone had experience with insuring a second car for sensible money? Thanks
  • FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - 95 1.2 non-starter. 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 1995 Punto SX (1.2) which is giving me a few problems at the moment. Untill this point, this car has been amazing. I have done 167,000 miles with no problems at all. Now however, i feel the car may have a terminal problem which would mean it will most likely have to be scrapped if it proves too costly.

But is the same ploicy for all breakdown companies and do they leave it until you have broken down before they break the news.
  • Rust 30 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Now the only thing that pops into my head is that I did see many Ford Ka and Transit with loads of rust on them but can?t think of anything else from the last 10 years. I know some cars are galvanised but after searching the CtoC breakdown here I just became more confused. Does any one know which car would be structurally sound for fewer than 2k? (Obviously it is depends on how the up keeping but some are better than other, you don?
  • Audi A4 handling problems 6 May 2005 (Forum)
Is rear wheel bearing replacement a DIY proposition or does it need a press? Could the squirming indicate worn front wishbones? (I've seen the info in car-by-car breakdown). If so is it the upper or lower wishbones that wear? There's also a bad vibration through the car at 60mph, so I'm beginning to suspect the spare wheel is out of balance. Any advice gratefully received.
  • Diesel Automatic Fuel Economy 8 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I also note that in the Car by Car breakdown HJ states; "Steptronic auto increases fuel consumption of 330D by around 25%." Obviously an Auto will normally have a slightly higher fuel consumption than a manual, but not of this magnitude.
  • Yet another Focus problem...<sigh> 14 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Got another problem with my late '99 2.0 Focus which is rather odd - a handful of times over the past month I've been driving the car and suddenly the dashboard lights start flickering, then the dashboard ignition lights all light up for a few seconds as if the car has stalled, before extinguishing again. Had a look at the car-by-car breakdown but can't see anything that matches.
  • Which small car? 17 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi All Starting to think about the next car for my wife, either new or up to a year old. I've had a look through the car-by-car breakdown, and have a couple of possibilities in mind, but would like advice from you before I say what are my current favourites.
