Subaru Legacy Engine flat spot 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I though at first it was caused by cheap supermarket petrol but switching to a proper brand has not helped. Could it be fuel filter, HT leads or...? Thanks. Sad Chicken -
Polo Peirsburg 2E Problem 16 Jul 2004 (Forum)
My son ( 19) has an 88 Polo 1.3 sport with a Peirsburg 2E carb. H e called me out to the car last night because it has started to drink fuel. A quick look down the throttle body reveal that an insert or even a jet has come loose from within one of the support legs for the primary ventura and is now jammed across the aperture. The question is how do you get this back in and is it bonded or just a press fit. -
driving conditions USA and us. 13 May 2004 (Forum)
Interesting differences in road usage between us and the States, they can turn right on red lights and overtake on any side on freeways:this greatly reduces the road rage as there cannot be lane hoggers. The roads are usually wide but the downside is the long long wait at lights and the pay for fuel before you fill and then queue again for your change. however at $1.80 I would gladly queue 3 times over here. The road tolls can be a pain as they crop up regularly until you get to know an area. -
406 emission device fault 19 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Dealer says diagnostics cannot trace fault and spent several days cleanning multiplex wiring loom! Does this model have special needs re fuel? Does it have two oxygen sensors? What other "device" is being referred to by the warning panel? Catalyst itself ? I am at a loss to understand the problem -
Tuning Box & Subsequent Reliability 14 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Have been toying with the idea of fitting a tuning box for some time, but still have reservations about the long term impact on reliability, (particularly fuel pumps). I know several members in th B.R. have fitted these devices, and wondered if anybody has put a substantial mileage (40k plus) without any undue problems. I have been reading on another forum where somebody is needing a replacement gearbox & final drive bearings due to the extra loading after only 30k !!!!! -
95 RON/97 RON-Which One??? 30 Aug 2003 (Forum)
This is much newer than my last car and so would I benefit from the advantages stated in the above thread from using a higher RON rated fuel. I don't really understand what it does or when to use it. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Jon -
Nitrogen Filled Tyres? 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I know that some tyre retailers claim nitrogen keeps tyres inflated for longer thus enhancing tyre life, reducing fuel consumption and 'helping with vehicle handling' - whatever that last bit means. Seems to me it seems like a good scam on behalf of garages to charge a premium to fill a punters tyres with a low cost gas. -
Best buy for £20k 31 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Running and purchase costs will be funded by employer's car allowance, the ususal 12p per mile for fuel, plus tax relief etc. What do you forum-contributers think I should buy?...Answers on an email. Ta! -
BMW 318 i rough idle 10 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I reved the engine and it cleared itself. I think it is probably due to some contamination in the fuel. Am I correct? Thanks for any help and replys -
Pay as you drive ? 1 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Apparently the motorists\' friend Mr Darling has admitted that the government is considering imposing a \'per mile\' tax on motorists to replace the tax disc. Now we\'ve had the discussion about getting rid of the tax disc and putting the tax on fuel (to preclude evasion, reduce admin. costs & even provide basic 3rd party insurance) so if they\'re thinking about replacing the VED disc wouldn\'t this be easier than setting up a whole new system for monitoring and charging motorists according to their mileage ? -
Instant economy! 27 May 2003 (Forum)
I was thinking of swapping it for something else because of it's poor economy, which had seen it struggle to get more than around 280 miles out of a tankful. Well, guess what. The mileometer is currently on 341 and the fuel warning light has yet to come on. Just how was this fantastic improvement achieved? I turned the air con off. -
Astra Diesel (1999) 20 May 2003 (Forum)
A friend's has just failed to start, and an air leak into the pump diagnosed. So far the garage has changed the fuel filter and all the leak-off pipes. It will start, and run, but not well. They have suggested a non-return valve in the pipe to the pump. I seem to recall a thread about this, and the use of transparent pipe to confirm the diagnosis. -
Fiesta 1995 'dying engine' 10 May 2003 (Forum)
It starts well when cold but the engine keeps dying and fails to restart when hot. The garage cannot find any faults. At one point the fuel level was very low and I wonder if there is dirt blocking something but it is intermittent and the garage could not replicate the fault. The car had been sitting unused for a number of months. Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone suggest what the fault may be, please? -
Cigarettes chucked out of cars 7 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I know it might seem silly, but I always wonder (and am alarmed by) the thought of what could happen if it gets lodged somewhere in or under the car close to a fuel line. Especially at night you can see the amount of sparks etc. that come off - makes you think! Y -
Exhaust emissions failed 28 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The joint at the back box has the slightest of leaks, and the tester has told me that it may be drawing in air from this point and causing the problem, but what I don\'t understand is where the CO is coming from. He also advised me to put in some fuel cleaner to clean the single point injecter, combustion chambers and lambda sensor. Is this likley to work? Reggie -
lack of power in citroen bx diesel 30 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I've just changed the air and oil filter and the oil, and it's just had a new cam belt, but the problem still exists before and after these changes. Fuel consumption is fine, there's no loss of oil and it starts ok. Any ideas of what the problem is? -
What`s happened to Two Stroke Developmen 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I know the barrier in the past was possibly horrendous exhaust emissions, but I would have thought that with modern fuel injection systems & computerised engine management, these problems could be resolved!! I believe I read that Ford were running an experimental engine in a Fiesta, but don`t know what came of this. Any info would be appreciated -
water vapour injection sysytems 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Its because the air drawn into the intake is denser with the water particles in it (I think). I've checked the fuel consumption on my car(old model Mondeo diesel)on days like this, and it is slightly better than on 'normal' days. I'm sure I heard of a system for injecting water into the inlet manifold many years ago. -
Golf MK IV 1.6 8V erratic idling 5 Sep 2002 (Forum)
It's got worse lately but has always done this to some degree. Seems to be OK when the engine is not fully warmed up. No problems with fuel economy or when on the go. Does anyone know what the most likely problem is or which areas should be looked at first? -
petrol bias 26 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The first a feeling that your growing biased to the manufacturers regularly and increasingly giving them the benefit of the doubt. And secondly regularly endorsing often the more expensive branded fuels offered by esso and shell etc. especially for high performance or sporty models. I know of two police forces that fill all there vehicles including patrol cars and high pursuit vehicles at the local supermarket, strange given what you say about performance and damage?
