Variable Speed Limit Change 28 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Hi, first time poster although an avid reader for some time. Driving along the M42 near Shirley last Friday which is covered by Variable Speed Limit Camera's, traffic is light & as I approach one between J4 & 3a they change to 50 limit. Quick look in my mirror & a car close behind so choose not to brake (my speed about 70) but to lift off for a few seconds. -
VW Golf mk3 - Reverse gear selection problems 6 Jan 2014 (Forum)
The crunching noise is not there with the engine turned off and this problem does not occur in any other gear. However the gear selection is sometimes not that smooth, "lumpy" would be a good description. The car has covered 120k miles, but is regularly serviced. It is a 1996 1.6 MK3 , engine code AEE and the gearbox is a 02k. I have spoken to a colleague at work and he thinks it may be the gearbox linkage cables ? -
When is A Diesel Engine Run In ? 29 Oct 2013 (Forum)
It lives mainly on the motorway. This car has been totally reliable and has only had service consumables replaced. -
2003 VW polo 1.4 - Rear brake rip-off? 24 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Seems like a hell of a lot for a brake. He also said the kit covers both sides which sound a bit dodgey to me. Have I been ripped off here? Any help appreciated. -

Porsche 917 - £110,000 for a missed gearchange 25 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Ouch. Although the session was insured against a crash, like a conventional motor policy the cover doesn't extend to mechanical damage. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorsport/9823844/Can-historic-racing-survive.html -
X type V6 petrol - Jaguar oil filter 20 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Looking at the screw on end there is a line of glue between the metal "cup" that holds the sealing rubber and the metal top. The glue seems to join these two metal pieces and will be covered with hot oil while the engine is running. This is my first Jaguar and I have not noticed this feature on any other makes of filter for other cars. My concern is whether any of the glue will melt into the oil and block oilways or is this not possible. -

Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 04 1.3 how do you change a headlight bulb? 16 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My daughter's 2004 Ka has blown another headlight bulb. I absolutely hate changing headlight bulbs on this car - just getting the cover off the back of the headlight unit is a challenge as the access is so tight. How do others do it? I didn't have any tools with me today, but I began to think it must be quicker and easier to remove the whole thing (starting with the radiator grill, which is unfortunately part of the front bumper) - right? -
FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 03 1.25 8v Active sport - idle problems 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Hey, just bought the above and found that the idle is 1500rpm. when ive looked at the throttle body there was tape covering the idle control vavle. took this off and give everything a good clean and even bout a new throttle body with ICV. now the car still idles at 1500rpm but once the acclerator is touched it revs on its own between 1500rpm - 2000rpm constantly. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.6 Brake Disc Change 6 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I had my pads on new last year and they have done about 11000 mile and are hardly showing any wear. They are Ferodo pads. The car has covered 41000 miles. My question is, is it vital to change the pads at the same time as discs? If the Ferodo pads were to be left on with new discs would this be bad? Many thanks for any help I may get with this. -
"I wish I hadn't done that" (Jack Dee voiceover) 25 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Reading in a rival publication how the hapless owner of a Lexus had accessed a hidden menu in his car's interactive display, changed the model details "to see what happened" has now an unusable sat-nav and aircon/heater and his dealer is baffled on how to re-set it to get everything working ---- my mind went back to the day, as a callow youth, adjusting the valves on my 250 Superdream I overtightened the custom made cam cover bolt shearing it clean off in the process......Sunday afternoon in the sticks with no alternative transport....... -
US Chevvy Driver literally pays in $$$ & cents 15 Aug 2008 (Forum)
But his coin hoard only covered half of the $16,000 (£8,500) price tag. The man's son said the most amazing thing for him was his father deciding to replace his 1981 pick-up at all. After 27 years he probably needed a change! -
Volkswagen Bora (1999 - 2006) - 2004 - Throttle Body - Emissions Warning Light 21 Nov 2007 (Forum)
My sister's Bora (2004 04 I think) has had the emissions warning light illuminate. The dealer is saying the throttle body needs replacing. This is fine as the car is covered by an extended warranty, but the warranty company wants the thrttle body cleaned (at my sister's expense) to see if the fault clears before they authorise a part change. Has anybody else had problems with emissions warning and the throttle body? -
MOT dilemma 12 Apr 2007 (Forum)
they must be losing money on a £25 MOT so are they more likely to find something minor that needs attention so as to cover their costs? Any thoughts? Thanks. -
Low cost work horse? 21 May 2006 (Forum)
We run a Mini and an MX-5 which cover almost all of our motoring needs. Occasionally though it would be useful to have a 3rd car to use for taking garden waste to the tip, bringing home the occasional Ikea flat pack and taking bikes out occasionally. -
406 slight vibration 4 Sep 2005 (Forum)
On my recent auction purchased 406,I have just done 1500 miles on a round trip into France, and unfortunately, the rear horizontal link bars had to be replaced while I was there,as the old ones had expired. The idea was to get back to Britain and have the bars replaced here.Anyhow..... The car still has a slight vibration to it,insofar as it lasts about 3 seconds, and repeats every,say,5 seconds at speed in excess of 60mph. Before I went, the tyres were replaced, and the wheels balanced,so I think that's covered, and I do have another theory, but I want to throw it open to you guys for input. -

Rotten egg smell 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Basically the cause of this was the Alternator overcharging the battery, which started to dry it up and emit this smell. I got the alternator changed, and replaced the battery with one from another working car. The smell dissappered immediately. 2 weeks on, I popped open the bonnet and noticed that the tray holding up the battery, and the rod holding in place the battery, seems to be covered in what looks like dried up battery fluid (white, greyish in colour and flaky) Any ideas of what the cause of this could be, it's baffled me. -
